In September 2019, Elon Musk announced a Tesla performance powertrain called Plaid, describing it as “the only thing beyond Ludicrous.” The name riffs on the 1987 comedy Spaceballs, where Plaid is the speed beyond Ludicrous. It was not a universal software mode for every Tesla: the original plan named Model S, Model X and the next-generation Roadster, and Tesla now sells Plaid as a production Model S configuration.
What did Elon Musk announce?
In September 2019, Musk said Tesla was developing a Plaid powertrain as a step beyond its existing Ludicrous performance branding. TechCrunch reported the announcement on September 11, 2019, and quoted Musk’s phrase: “the only thing beyond Ludicrous is Plaid.” TechCrunch’s report described the proposed setup as using three motors.

The announcement initially named Model S, Model X and the next-generation Roadster. Musk clarified that the original plan did not include Model 3 or Model Y, as reported by Futurism. That 2019 announcement describes the plan at the time; it should not be read as a promise that every named vehicle would receive the same version or specification.
Why is Tesla Plaid called Spaceballs?
Spaceballs, the 1987 science-fiction comedy, features a joke about a spaceship accelerating through familiar speed labels. “Ludicrous speed” is followed by “Plaid,” portrayed as even faster. Tesla had already used “Ludicrous” as performance branding, so Musk extended the film reference with the next step in its speed gag.

That connection explains the name, not a feature of the movie that changes a car. “Plaid” is Tesla performance branding; it is not a special effect or a setting enabled by watching Spaceballs.
Is Plaid a mode or a Tesla powertrain?
“Plaid mode” is a handy shorthand, but it can give the wrong impression. Musk’s announcement concerned a powertrain, and Tesla currently lists Model S Plaid as a tri-motor configuration. It is therefore more accurate to think of Plaid as a high-performance vehicle configuration than as a software toggle available across the Tesla range.

How fast is the current Model S Plaid?
Tesla’s current Model S page lists the Plaid configuration with these performance figures:

| Specification | Tesla’s listed Model S Plaid figure |
|---|---|
| Powertrain | Tri-motor |
| Power | 1,020 hp |
| 0–60 mph acceleration | 1.99 seconds |
| Indicated top speed | 200 mph; Tesla says this requires a paid hardware upgrade and may not be available for the entire drive |
| Quarter-mile | 9.23 seconds at a 155 mph trap speed |
These are Tesla’s published figures, not an independent test result. In particular, the 200 mph figure carries Tesla’s hardware-upgrade and availability qualifications.
Which Tesla models have Plaid?
The original 2019 plan named Model S, Model X and the next-generation Roadster, while excluding Model 3 and Model Y. Tesla’s current materials document Model S Plaid as a production configuration and say Model X adopted the same Plaid powertrain. The original announcement’s mention of Roadster does not establish its current availability or delivery status; check Tesla’s current model information for what is offered now.

Tesla says Plaid Track Mode supported Model S in setting production-EV Nürburgring lap records in 2021 and again in 2023. Tesla also describes the Model X Plaid as capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds. Those are Tesla’s stated historical and performance claims, distinct from the current Model S product-page figures above. Tesla’s Plaid feature article provides that track and Model X context.
