Michael Dell, Jeff Bezos and Brian Chesky did not need to invent a wholly new product to build their early business opportunities. In Forbes Staff’s October 6, 2026 article, their examples illustrate a different route: use a changing market, a better way to serve customers, or an overlooked existing asset to create an advantage. The point is not that innovation is unimportant; it is that innovation alone does not build a company.

What “innovation seduction” means

“Innovation seduction” is the belief that a new product or technology can stand in for the work of building a business. A novel idea may open a door, but a venture still has to find a customer and a market, establish a reason to win, sell, manage cash and financing, build an organization, and lead its growth.

That distinction changes the founder’s first question. Instead of stopping at “What can I invent?”, ask: “What is changing, and how can I use that change better than anyone else?” Innovation can be part of the answer, but it need not be the venture’s primary advantage.

How Dell, Bezos and Chesky used a different kind of edge

Forbes Staff’s examples are about business-model choices around products, channels and assets that already existed. They are illustrations of the article’s argument, not a complete account of each company’s history.

Founder Opportunity described in the article Where the advantage lay
Michael Dell Selling computers directly to customers Direct sales enabled customization and contributed to lower inventory and receivables, access to newer components, and growth that required less capital.
Jeff Bezos Combining the emerging Internet with books and a sales channel The opportunity was to provide customer value through a new channel, rather than invent a new product.
Brian Chesky Connecting travelers with underused housing The model made use of existing places to stay rather than building hotels.

Across the three examples, the underlying question is not simply whether a product is new. It is whether a company can connect a customer need to a more effective way of delivering value—and whether its founders can make that model work.

What founders need beyond an invention

A business opportunity becomes more credible when a founder can pair it with the capabilities and evidence needed to execute. The article highlights several practical responsibilities:

Rank #2
Lost in Space (Innovation) #1 Innovation
  • Written by Matt Thompson, David Campiti
  • Illustrated by Eddy Newell, Mark Jones
  • Find the market: identify a customer segment and a need worth addressing.
  • Establish strategic fit: determine what could give this venture an advantage, rather than assuming novelty will do so.
  • Sell: show that customers will choose and pay for the offer.
  • Manage cash and financing: understand the venture’s capital needs and match financing to its stage.
  • Build and lead: develop the organization and guide it as the business grows.

A practical way to evaluate an idea

Before committing heavily to a concept, work through the questions in sequence. The aim is to uncover what is still an assumption and identify the next commercial proof point.

  1. What is changing? Name the shift that creates an opening, such as a new channel or a change in how customers can be served.
  2. Who has a meaningful need? Define the customer segment and the specific problem, rather than relying on a broad claim that “everyone” might want the idea.
  3. Why could this venture be better? Identify a strategic edge in the model, channel, customer value or use of existing assets.
  4. What must be commercially proved next? Specify the evidence that would show customers will adopt or pay for the offer. Let the result determine the next step.
  5. Which capabilities are missing? Consider the skills required to sell, manage finances, build a team and lead growth; decide how the venture will obtain them.
  6. What financing fits this stage? Base the financing choice on what the venture needs to prove and build next, rather than treating capital as a substitute for evidence or execution.

How to read the article’s statistics

Forbes Staff reports that about 11% of first movers ultimately dominated their industries and about half failed. The article does not name the underlying study or explain its method, so this should be read as a figure reported by that article, not as a verified general finding.

The article also says that about 1% of a research sample of 87 billion-dollar entrepreneurs built their advantage primarily around technological innovation. It does not identify the researcher, the study, how the sample was defined or the method used. The figure therefore cannot establish a general rate for entrepreneurs or prove that technology rarely matters.

These figures are consistent with the article’s argument that being first or having an innovative technology is not, by itself, a guarantee of business success. Their limited sourcing means they should not be treated as conclusive evidence for that broader claim.

Innovation is an input, not a substitute for execution

The useful lesson is not to avoid invention. It is to test whether an innovation is connected to a real customer need, a sound way of reaching customers and a team capable of delivering. Dell, Bezos and Chesky are presented as examples of founders who found opportunity in how value could be delivered—not only in creating something new.

As the Forbes Staff article concludes: “But innovations don’t build companies. Capable entrepreneurs do.”
