Short answer: choose Godot for a 2D-first or stylized project when keeping royalties, seat fees, and vendor dependence close to zero matters most; choose Unity when mobile deployment, C# skills, rapid cross-platform iteration, and a large add-on ecosystem are central; choose Unreal when high-fidelity 3D, advanced rendering, and PC or console ambitions justify a heavier toolchain and possible royalties.
None of these engines is universally best. The right choice depends on your target platforms, visual requirements, team skills, revenue model, and tolerance for licensing changes. Use the comparison below to make that decision before production, then validate it with a small project-specific prototype rather than relying on generic performance claims.

At-a-glance comparison
| Engine | Best fit | Main scripting approach | Commercial exposure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Godot | 2D games, stylized 3D, educational and experimental projects, solo developers | Approachable scripting model with a lightweight editor | MIT-licensed and free; no engine royalty or seat fee, but distributed binaries require the copyright and license notice |
| Unity | Mobile and mid-size cross-platform games, teams using C#, projects needing a broad asset and plug-in ecosystem | C#-centered workflow | Games use a seat-based subscription model after the Runtime Fee was canceled; current plan eligibility and prices must be verified before budgeting |
| Unreal Engine | Visually ambitious 3D games for PC and consoles | C++ plus visual Blueprints | Free below $1 million in lifetime gross product revenue; generally 5% of directly attributable gross revenue above that threshold, with Epic Games Store revenue royalty-free |
The table is a starting point, not a performance ranking. A carefully scoped 2D game can ship successfully in any of the three, while a large open-world project can expose very different production risks than a small puzzle game.

Licensing, royalties and budgeting
Godot: permissive MIT licensing
Godot is free and open source under the MIT license. You can use the engine for commercial games without paying a per-seat subscription or a percentage of sales. If you distribute the engine binary with your game, include the required copyright notice and MIT license statement in the distribution. The MIT license is OSI-approved, and Godot supports desktop operating systems broadly.

Those terms make Godot attractive when predictable margins matter more than access to a proprietary vendor ecosystem. You also retain access to the engine’s source code, which can reduce dependence on a single company’s roadmap. The trade-off is that your team may need to solve more problems itself, especially when a niche plug-in, platform integration, or advanced rendering feature is not available in the form you need.
Unity: seat subscriptions after the Runtime Fee cancellation
Unity announced on September 12, 2024 that it canceled the Runtime Fee for games and returned to a seat-based subscription model. The announcement also said pricing and qualifying-threshold changes would take effect on January 1, 2025. Because plan eligibility and prices can change, treat the current Unity pricing page as the authority when calculating a budget.
For an indie team, the practical question is not only the monthly or annual seat cost. Count every person who needs editor access, decide whether contractors require seats, and model the cost of keeping the project maintained after launch. Unity’s subscription approach makes the bill easier to forecast than a revenue percentage, but it is not the same as a permanently free commercial license.

Unreal: a revenue threshold followed by a royalty
Epic’s licensing terms state that game developers are free below $1 million in lifetime gross product revenue. Once a game exceeds that threshold, the runtime generally carries a 5% royalty on directly attributable gross revenue. Revenue from the Epic Games Store is royalty-free under the same licensing framework. The threshold is based on lifetime gross product revenue, so it is not a yearly allowance that resets each January.
At the planning stage, build a revenue model that separates sales directly attributable to the Unreal game from unrelated company income. Account for refunds, taxes, platform fees, downloadable content, and bundled products according to the license’s definitions rather than assuming that every cash receipt is treated identically. Obtain legal or accounting advice for an unusual business structure.
Epic also lists a $1,850-per-seat annual license for certain non-game commercial uses after the stated revenue condition. That figure is not a general game-development price and should not be used to estimate a normal game team’s royalty bill.

How licensing affects the decision
- Choose Godot when eliminating royalties and recurring seat charges is a first-order requirement.
- Choose Unity when a predictable seat budget is acceptable and its mobile, C#, and ecosystem advantages save enough production time.
- Choose Unreal when the visual or platform target can generate enough value to justify the learning curve and a possible 5% royalty.
- For any engine, keep a copy of the applicable license and record the version and date you accepted it. Licensing terms are contractual, not merely editor settings.
2D, stylized 3D and high-end 3D
Godot for 2D-first and stylized work
Godot is strongest when the game is primarily 2D or uses a deliberately stylized 3D look. Its lightweight, open-source approach suits a solo developer who wants to open a project quickly, inspect the engine, and iterate without a large infrastructure footprint. It is also a sensible choice for educational projects and experiments where the ability to modify the tool is more useful than a massive commercial marketplace.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Improving 3D support does not automatically make Godot the best choice for every visually demanding project. If your design depends on a particular high-end rendering feature, verify that feature in a small scene and on each target device before committing the full production.
Unity for broad, practical cross-platform production
Unity remains a practical default for mobile and mid-size cross-platform games. C# familiarity can shorten onboarding for teams that already build software in that language, and the large asset and plug-in ecosystem can fill gaps in art, input, analytics, networking, and platform integration. The benefit is speed of assembly and iteration; the cost is managing third-party dependencies and subscription seats.
Unity can render attractive 3D, but do not infer a fixed quality ceiling or frame-rate advantage from the engine name. Performance depends on scene complexity, shaders, scripts, memory budgets, target hardware, and the team’s optimization work. Test representative content rather than comparing empty benchmark scenes.
Unreal for visually ambitious 3D
Unreal is the strongest candidate when the project is built around high-fidelity 3D visuals, advanced rendering, and PC or console presentation. Its C++ and Blueprint combination lets programmers work at a lower level while designers and technical artists build logic visually. That flexibility comes with a steeper learning curve and a heavier production process than a small 2D game usually needs.
For a stylized game, Unreal can still be appropriate if its rendering and content pipeline remove a major risk. Conversely, using it solely because a project contains 3D models can add complexity without improving the player experience. Define the visual requirements in measurable terms—lighting, material complexity, view distance, frame-rate target, and minimum hardware—before selecting an engine.

Scripting and team workflow
Unity and C#
Unity is a good fit when the team already knows C# or wants a conventional general-purpose language for gameplay systems and tools. Before production, agree on code conventions, scene ownership, prefabs or equivalent reusable content, and how third-party packages are versioned. A large ecosystem accelerates development only when dependencies are pinned, documented, and tested after engine upgrades.
Unreal with C++ and Blueprints
Unreal combines C++ with visual Blueprints. This can divide work effectively: core systems and performance-sensitive code can live in C++, while designers prototype and tune gameplay in Blueprints. Establish boundaries early. If the project allows every system to grow in whichever layer is convenient, debugging and handoffs become harder as the team expands.
Godot’s approachable scripting model
Godot emphasizes an approachable scripting workflow that is friendly to small teams and newcomers. The advantage is a short path from an idea to a playable scene. The responsibility is to create your own project structure, testing habits, and reusable tools instead of assuming that a large vendor ecosystem will provide them. For a solo developer, that simplicity can outweigh the absence of a commercial feature for a particular niche.
Platforms, storefronts and consoles
Desktop and mobile
Godot’s official FAQ confirms broad desktop support, making it a practical option for desktop releases that do not depend on a proprietary console SDK. Unity’s established mobile and cross-platform workflow is often the safer choice when Android and iOS are central to the business plan. Unreal is well suited to demanding PC releases and can support mobile projects, but the visual and content pipeline may be more than a small mobile game needs.
Store submission is separate from engine licensing. You still need accounts, signing credentials, platform compliance, age ratings, privacy disclosures, and testing for each storefront. Budget time for these tasks regardless of engine.
Console development
An engine’s lack of a console fee does not grant console access. Platform holders control approval and SDK distribution. Epic documents that console development has no Unreal Engine fee, but developers still need platform-holder approval to obtain console SDK access. Similar approval and confidentiality requirements apply to console work generally.

Ask the platform holder and the engine vendor, in writing, which version, support program, middleware and certification requirements apply to your team. Do this before promising a console launch date. A prototype running on PC is not evidence that the project is ready for a development kit or certification review.

Storefront economics
Keep three separate ledgers: engine charges, storefront charges, and your own operating costs. Unreal’s royalty treatment for Epic Games Store revenue affects only the engine royalty calculation; it does not eliminate the store’s own rules or fees. Godot’s MIT license removes an engine royalty, not payment-processing, storefront, localization, hosting, or support costs.
Editor ecosystem, source access and vendor dependence
| Decision factor | Godot | Unity | Unreal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Source-code access | Open source under MIT; teams can inspect and modify the engine | Proprietary editor and runtime; depend on the vendor’s releases and policies | Vendor-controlled source access and licensing; use is governed by Epic’s terms |
| Marketplace named in the comparison | Godot Asset Library | Unity Asset Store | Epic Fab |
| Typical ecosystem advantage | Community-driven, lightweight extensions | Large catalog of assets and plug-ins for common production needs | Strong catalog for high-end 3D content and production workflows |
| Main ecosystem risk | You may need to build or maintain missing integrations | Third-party package compatibility and subscription changes require monitoring | Complexity, version coordination and specialized platform access can raise overhead |
Marketplace availability is not the same as support quality. For every critical package, check maintenance activity, engine-version compatibility, license terms, export targets, and whether you can replace it if the author stops updating it. Prototype without a nonessential package first; otherwise it can become impossible to tell whether a failure belongs to your game or the dependency.

Solo developers
A solo developer usually benefits from the shortest path to a playable build and the fewest recurring obligations. Godot often wins for a 2D or stylized project because its free MIT licensing and lightweight workflow remove financial and administrative friction. Unity can be the better choice when the solo developer already knows C# and needs a particular mobile plug-in. Unreal makes sense for a solo developer with strong 3D skills whose concept depends on high-end presentation, but learning two scripting layers and a larger toolchain can consume a substantial portion of the schedule.
Small teams
For a small team, the cost of coordination can exceed the engine fee. Choose the tool that your artists, designers and programmers can use consistently. Unity’s familiar C# workflow and asset ecosystem can reduce integration work. Godot’s source access can help a technically strong team fix engine-level issues directly. Unreal’s Blueprints can let designers iterate without waiting for code, while C++ provides control for systems that need it.
Growing or high-budget teams
As the project grows, evaluate build automation, source-control practices, profiling, crash reporting, localization, certification and hiring. A prototype that works for three people may fail when twenty people edit the same content. Unreal’s production overhead can be justified by a large 3D target; Unity’s cross-platform workflow may fit a broad mid-size release; Godot can remain viable when the art direction and platform list stay within its strengths.
Best Value
A practical selection process
- Write the non-negotiables. List target platforms, minimum frame rate, display resolution, visual style, multiplayer or networking needs, accessibility requirements, launch date and maximum tool budget.
- Classify the workload. Mark the project as 2D-first, stylized 3D, or high-fidelity 3D. Note whether mobile battery and memory limits matter more than desktop visual quality.
- Map skills and staffing. Record who already knows C#, C++, visual scripting, shader work, build engineering and platform submission. Include the skills you can realistically hire.
- Model the five-year cost. Include Unity seats, any Unreal royalty after the threshold, marketplace purchases, contractors, platform fees, support and the cost of switching engines. For Godot, include engineering time for custom tools and integrations.
- Build the same vertical slice three times only if the decision is unclear. Recreate one representative mechanic, one representative level, save/load, input, a build for every target platform and a worst-case visual scene. Keep the art and requirements constant.
- Score evidence, not impressions. Measure load time, memory, frame time, iteration time, export reliability and defect rate on target hardware. There is no independent controlled benchmark establishing a universal winner; results are workload-dependent.
- Lock the decision with a written rationale. Record the engine version, license assumptions, target platforms, known gaps, upgrade policy and a trigger for reconsideration. Revisit only when a requirement changes, not whenever a competitor releases a feature.
Prototype checklist before production
- Export a release-like build, not only an editor preview.
- Test the lowest-spec device you intend to support and one device near your preferred target.
- Exercise suspend, resume, controller or touch input, save corruption recovery and window or aspect-ratio changes.
- Measure memory while loading your largest scene and the longest play session you expect.
- Run a clean checkout on a second machine so hidden local packages and settings are exposed.
- Confirm that every asset, plug-in, font and middleware component permits commercial distribution.
- Verify the current engine license, subscription plan, royalty rules and platform agreements before signing contracts.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Choosing by screenshots
Marketing images say little about shader complexity, memory pressure or iteration speed. Rebuild a representative scene and profile it on target hardware. If the scene fails, reduce scope or change engines before production content multiplies the cost of change.
Assuming free means cost-free
Godot removes engine royalties and seat subscriptions, but engineering, art, testing, storefront fees and platform approvals still cost money. The remedy is a complete budget that separates tool licensing from production and distribution expenses.
Ignoring revenue definitions
Unreal’s $1 million condition and 5% royalty apply to lifetime gross product revenue and directly attributable gross revenue, not an informal estimate of profit. Keep sales records by product and seek professional advice when bundles, downloadable content or multiple legal entities complicate attribution.

Do not announce console support because an engine can technically export there. Start the platform-holder approval and SDK process early, protect confidential materials, and schedule certification as a separate milestone.
Letting packages dictate the architecture
A plug-in can speed up the first month and constrain the next three years. Isolate third-party code behind your own interfaces, pin versions, keep an exportable fallback, and test upgrades on a branch.
Which engine fits common indie scenarios?
| Project scenario | Most defensible first choice | Why | Reconsider when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel-art platformer for desktop | Godot | 2D strength, approachable workflow and no engine royalty | A required platform integration or team tool is unavailable |
| Stylized 3D adventure for PC | Godot or Unity | Both can support stylized production; choose based on team skills and required packages | High-end rendering becomes the primary selling point |
| Mobile live game with frequent device releases | Unity | Mobile and cross-platform workflow, C# familiarity and broad plug-in ecosystem | Seat economics or a critical package no longer fits the plan |
| Photorealistic PC action game | Unreal | High-fidelity 3D and advanced rendering are central requirements | The scope shrinks to a small 2D or low-complexity project |
| Console-focused 3D title | Unreal or Unity | Both are established candidates; select after approval, SDK and team-capability checks | The platform holder or target hardware imposes a feature gap |
| Educational or experimental prototype | Godot | Free MIT licensing, source access and a lightweight workflow reduce barriers | The prototype evolves into a platform-heavy commercial product |
Bottom line
Godot is the clearest choice for 2D, stylized and experimental indie games when licensing freedom and low overhead matter most. Unity is the balanced option for mobile and mid-size cross-platform production when C# skills and an extensive ecosystem deliver practical speed. Unreal is the specialist choice for high-fidelity 3D on PC and consoles, provided the team accepts greater complexity and models the royalty that may apply after $1 million in lifetime gross product revenue.
Make the final call with a representative vertical slice, current license terms and target-platform evidence. The engine that lets your actual team build, test and ship the required game is better than the one with the most impressive feature list.
