Neither Android Night Light nor grayscale is proven to be universally better for sleep. Choose Night Light when a warm, less-blue screen feels more comfortable in a dark room. Try grayscale when colorful feeds and games make you keep scrolling. The strongest wind-down step is still a clear bedtime boundary—ideally less phone use—not a display filter by itself.
The short answer
Night Light and grayscale solve different problems. Night Light shifts the display toward warmer red or amber tones by reducing blue color. Grayscale removes color entirely, changing the screen to black and white. One is primarily a viewing-comfort control; the other can act as a behavioral cue that makes visual content less rewarding.

| What you want at bedtime | Setting to try first | Why | What the evidence can—and cannot—say |
|---|---|---|---|
| A warmer-looking screen in a dim room | Night Light | Reduces blue color and shifts the display toward amber or red. | Blue-light-reduction studies have mixed results; no trial establishes Android Night Light as a superior sleep treatment. |
| Less temptation from colorful feeds | Grayscale | Removes color, which may make apps and endless feeds less engaging. | A 2024 Android-user study found lower screen time but no improvement in self-reported sleep quality. |
| A guaranteed improvement in sleep | Neither on its own | Filters do not replace a consistent bedtime, lower stimulation, or professional care when sleep problems persist. | There is no direct Android Night Light-versus-grayscale trial or reliable universal estimate of sleep improvement. |
You can test either setting for a week, but judge it by the outcome you care about: eye comfort, time spent scrolling, or how easily you put the phone down. Do not treat a preferred color mode as a treatment for insomnia or another sleep disorder.

Night Light warms the display
Google Pixel Help describes Night Light as a way to make a phone easier to use in dim light by reducing blue color. Depending on the intensity, the screen appears yellow, amber, or red. It does not remove images, icons, or colors; it changes their color balance. A blue shirt may look muted or greenish, while white backgrounds become warmer.

Night Light is therefore the more natural first experiment if your complaint is that the screen feels harsh, cool, or glaring at night. Use it with a lower brightness that remains readable. A very warm filter at high brightness can still be uncomfortable, and a dim filter does not stop a stimulating video or an engaging conversation.
Grayscale removes color
Grayscale converts the interface to black and white. Text, photos, notifications, and app icons remain visible, but color-based signals disappear. A red notification badge, a vivid short-video thumbnail, and a game’s reward colors all lose some of their visual pull.
That change may create friction before you open another app. It is a behavioral possibility, not a guaranteed reduction in use: some people will continue scrolling because the content, habit, or social pressure is still compelling. Grayscale also makes color-dependent tasks—such as checking a map’s traffic layer or editing photos—harder to interpret, so it is best scheduled for the period when those tasks are finished.

Dark theme is separate
Dark theme changes light backgrounds and interface colors; it is not the same as Night Light or grayscale. You can use dark theme without warming or desaturating the display. Depending on the phone, the controls may be independent, so changing one does not automatically activate the others.
What sleep research says
Blue-light filtering has mixed evidence
A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis of interventions intended to reduce short-wavelength (“blue”) light reported inconsistent findings across the included studies. In one cited pooled self-report analysis, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index result favored the intervention (Hedges’ g = −1.25, 95% confidence interval −2.39 to −0.11; k = 3). Another pooled analysis found a difference in total sleep time (Hedges’ g = 0.51, 95% confidence interval 0.18 to 0.84; k = 3). Both estimates are based on only three studies in those analyses, and the overall findings were mixed.
Those interventions were not a direct test of Android Night Light, and the pooled effects do not show that Night Light alone caused the differences. They also do not establish a dose, intensity, schedule, or result that applies to every phone and user.
A controlled smartphone study was small and specific
A randomized, double-blind, crossover study published in 2017 included 22 healthy adults who used conventional and blue-light-suppressed smartphones during evening sessions. The researchers reported differences in sleepiness and commission errors under the study protocol. However, measured changes in serum melatonin and cortisol were not statistically significant. The sample was small, the protocol was specific, and the display intervention does not establish what Night Light will do on your device in ordinary use.

Grayscale may change behavior without improving sleep quality
A 2024 paper by Dekker and Baumgartner examined a one-week grayscale intervention among Android users. Participants had lower screen time during the grayscale period, but they did not report better sleep quality. The authors also noted that evidence about grayscale’s effects on sleep has been limited.
This distinction matters. A setting can help you stop using the phone sooner without directly changing the biology of sleep. If grayscale reduces a 40-minute scrolling session to 15 minutes, that may be useful for your routine even though the study does not prove a sleep-quality benefit. Conversely, if you keep using the phone for the same length of time, removing color may accomplish little.
Why the statistics do not settle the Android choice
Hedges’ g is a standardized comparison, not a promise of a specific number of extra minutes of sleep. The confidence intervals show uncertainty around each pooled estimate, and the k value of three means only three studies contributed to each cited analysis. The review combined different light-reduction methods, devices, schedules, and participants rather than testing the Night Light control on a standard Android phone.
The 2017 crossover trial is useful because each participant experienced both display conditions, but 22 people and one evening-use protocol cannot represent every age group, screen, brightness level, or bedtime. Taken together, these findings justify a cautious experiment for comfort or behavior—not a claim that one Android mode changes melatonin, prevents insomnia, or reliably improves sleep for everyone.

Choose by the problem you are trying to solve
If the screen feels too bright or cool
- Start with Night Light at a comfortable warm level.
- Lower brightness until the display is readable but not glowing across the room.
- Keep the phone farther from your face and avoid using it in a completely dark room when possible.
- If the display still bothers you, the more effective change may be putting the phone down earlier rather than increasing the color shift.
If colorful apps keep you scrolling
- Schedule grayscale for your normal wind-down period.
- Keep the phone in grayscale long enough to observe whether you open fewer apps or stop sooner.
- Pair it with a specific boundary, such as no social feeds after brushing your teeth or charging the phone outside the bedroom.
- Turn color back on temporarily when you need accurate maps, photos, shopping details, or other color-dependent information.
If you want a simple experiment
Use one setting at a time for seven nights and record three observations: approximately when you stopped using the phone, whether the screen felt comfortable, and how rested you felt the next morning. Do not change several other habits at the same time if you want to know whether the display mode made a practical difference. A second week with the other setting gives you a personal comparison, not a clinical test.
Compare the settings on more than sleep
Consider four practical axes. First is visual comfort: Night Light preserves color and may feel less harsh in a dim room, while grayscale can make text and icons look flatter or less familiar. Second is behavioral friction: grayscale removes the visual rewards that make a feed, game, or notification attractive, but it cannot remove the underlying content or habit. Third is scheduling: Pixel provides automatic Night Light schedules and places grayscale inside Bedtime mode, while another manufacturer may put color controls under Display or Accessibility with different automation. Fourth is task compatibility: Night Light is generally usable while checking photos or maps, but grayscale can make color-coded information ambiguous.
These trade-offs mean the best setting can change during the same evening. You might use Night Light while finishing a color-dependent task, then let a scheduled grayscale routine begin once the task is complete. That is a convenience choice, not evidence that the combination has a stronger biological effect.

How to turn on Night Light on a Pixel
Google’s current Pixel instructions place Night Light in the display settings. Labels and availability can differ on other Android phones.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & touch.
- Tap Night Light.
- Adjust the strength until the warmer color is comfortable and text remains easy to read.
- Choose a schedule. Pixel offers a custom time or a sunset-to-sunrise schedule when location and system settings support it.
On supported Pixel models, Night Light is also available from Quick Settings. A scheduled setting is usually more reliable than remembering to activate it each night. Check the preview before bed; a schedule that starts too early can interfere with color-sensitive tasks, while one that starts after you are already scrolling misses the intended wind-down period.
Night Light changes the appearance of the display, not the brightness ceiling or the content itself. If white pages remain uncomfortable, reduce brightness separately. If you share the phone or use it for work late in the day, a custom start time may be less disruptive than sunset-to-sunrise automation.
How to turn on grayscale at bedtime on a Pixel
Pixel exposes grayscale through Bedtime mode rather than as the same control used for Night Light.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
- Tap Bedtime mode.
- Set or select the bedtime routine you want to use.
- Enable the screen option for Grayscale.
- Choose the start and end times for the routine, then save it.
Google’s help pages indicate that some steps work only on Android 14 and later, while more detailed Bedtime mode screen-option instructions mention Android 13 and later. The exact menu wording, scheduling controls, and availability can vary by manufacturer, phone model, and Android version. If you do not see Grayscale in Bedtime mode, use the Settings search field for “grayscale,” “bedtime,” or “color correction,” and check your manufacturer’s accessibility or digital-wellbeing menus.
Before relying on the routine, trigger it manually once and confirm that the display actually becomes monochrome. Also verify the end time. An unfinished bedtime schedule can leave maps, photographs, or work apps in grayscale the next morning, which may lead you to disable the feature rather than refine the schedule.
What to do when the menu does not match
Night Light is missing
- Search Settings for Night Light, blue light, eye comfort, or reading mode; manufacturers use different names.
- Look under Display or Display & brightness.
- Install system updates if your phone is unusually old, but do not assume an update will add the feature.
- Use the phone’s built-in documentation rather than assuming the Pixel path applies to another brand.
Grayscale does not switch on
- Confirm that Bedtime mode is scheduled and that the current time falls inside the routine.
- Check whether grayscale is listed as a screen option inside Bedtime mode rather than as a top-level Display setting.
- On some devices, look under Accessibility for color correction or color filters. Those controls may not offer the same schedule as Pixel Bedtime mode.
- Make sure another digital-wellbeing schedule is not overriding the routine.
Colors look wrong after the scheduled period
Open the same control and verify both the start and end times, including the selected days. If you enabled a separate accessibility color filter, turn it off or adjust its schedule; two filters can make the display appear darker or more distorted than expected.

Should you use Night Light and grayscale together?
You can combine the controls if your phone exposes both, but there is no evidence that combining them provides additive sleep benefits. The result is a monochrome screen with a warmer tint, which some people find easier to view and others find less legible. Test the combination briefly during a normal evening. If reading becomes difficult, return to one setting and lower brightness instead of compensating by holding the phone closer.
A wind-down setup that does more than a filter
Display settings work best as part of a plan that limits stimulating use. A practical sequence is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Set Night Light or grayscale to start automatically 30–60 minutes before your intended bedtime.
- Reduce brightness to the lowest level that remains comfortable and readable.
- Finish tasks that require color, such as maps, photo editing, or shopping, before the schedule begins.
- Enable a Bedtime mode or app limit that blocks or pauses the feeds you tend to open automatically.
- Place the phone on a charger away from the bed, or set a fixed “last check” time.
- If you wake during the night, avoid turning the display back to full brightness and color for routine clock checking.
The point is not to make the screen perfectly sleep-friendly. It is to remove the easiest reasons to continue using it. A phone-free wind-down can be more consequential than choosing between two display filters.
A two-week comparison you can actually interpret
For the first seven nights, use only Night Light during the same scheduled window. Note the approximate time of your last interaction, whether you increased or decreased brightness, and whether the warm tint felt comfortable. For the next seven nights, use grayscale at a comparable time while keeping the rest of the routine as similar as practical. Record whether you bypassed the setting, switched color back on for a task, or stopped using the phone because the experience became less appealing.
Look for a repeatable pattern rather than a single unusually good or bad night. If one setting makes you stop earlier but the next morning feels unchanged, it may still be worthwhile as a habit tool. If either mode causes squinting, headaches, or difficulty completing essential tasks, adjust the intensity or schedule rather than forcing it. Your notes can guide a personal usability decision, but they cannot establish a medical effect.
Common mistakes and safer expectations
- Assuming blue light alone causes insomnia: The cited studies do not justify that universal claim. Sleep is affected by timing, behavior, environment, and individual health factors.
- Expecting grayscale to work for everyone: The 2024 study found lower screen time in its intervention, not a guaranteed effect for every user and not better self-reported sleep quality.
- Leaving brightness high: A warm or monochrome display can still be glaring when brightness is excessive.
- Using a filter as permission to scroll longer: If the setting makes you feel that late-night phone use is harmless, it may undermine the wind-down goal.
- Following a Pixel path on another phone: Android manufacturers and versions change labels, locations, and scheduling behavior.
- Expecting a filter to treat a sleep disorder: Persistent insomnia, loud snoring with pauses in breathing, severe daytime sleepiness, or other ongoing symptoms deserve professional assessment.
Bottom line for your choice
Pick Night Light when warmer color and dim-room comfort are your main concerns. Pick grayscale when the visual appeal of colorful apps is what keeps you engaged, and combine it with a firm stopping time. Neither setting has been shown to beat the other for sleep, and neither replaces reducing late-night phone use. Treat the first week as a personal usability experiment, then keep the setting that helps you put the phone down without making essential tasks difficult.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Android Night Light actually help you sleep?
Night Light can make a display warmer and more comfortable in dim light, but sleep evidence for blue-light-reduction interventions is mixed. A 2017 randomized crossover study of 22 adults found some differences in sleepiness and commission errors, while melatonin and cortisol changes were not statistically significant. No study establishes Pixel Night Light as a sleep treatment.
Best Value
Does grayscale make a phone less distracting?
It can make colorful feeds, badges, and game rewards less visually engaging, so some people may stop sooner. A 2024 one-week Android study found lower screen time during grayscale use but no improvement in self-reported sleep quality. The effect is behavioral and varies by person.
How do I turn on grayscale at bedtime on Android?
On a Pixel, open Settings, choose Digital Wellbeing & parental controls, open Bedtime mode, enable Grayscale as a screen option, and set the routine’s start and end times. Other manufacturers may place grayscale under Accessibility, Color correction, Display, or a differently named bedtime feature.
Can I use Night Light and grayscale together?
If your phone offers both controls, you can test them together. The result is a warmer-tinted monochrome display, but there is no evidence of additive sleep benefits. Use the combination only if it remains comfortable and legible.

Search Settings for Night Light, blue light, eye comfort, reading mode, grayscale, bedtime, or color correction. Check Display, Display & brightness, Accessibility, and Digital Wellbeing. Menu names, scheduling, and feature availability vary by manufacturer, model, and Android version.
Should I use a filter instead of putting my phone away?
No. A filter may improve comfort or create friction around scrolling, but it does not replace a bedtime boundary. Pair the chosen mode with lower brightness, a scheduled routine, app limits, and charging the phone away from the bed when possible.
The Bottom Line
Choose Night Light for warmer viewing comfort; choose grayscale to test whether removing color helps you disengage. Neither has proved superior for sleep, so keep the option that supports an earlier stopping time without making necessary phone tasks difficult.
