There is no universally best choice among Indian equities, fixed deposits (FDs), gold and bonds. Compare specific investments over the same period using total return after taxes and costs, inflation, risk of loss and access to cash—not an FD rate against an equity index or a bond coupon. The right fit depends on when you need the money and how much volatility or loss you can tolerate.
What each investment can—and cannot—deliver
Equities: company ownership and uncertain prices
A share represents ownership in a company. Investors may earn through price appreciation and dividends, but both company-specific events and broader economic conditions can push share prices down as well as up. The route matters: a diversified index fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) spreads exposure across an index, while an individual share concentrates it. ETFs provide index exposure and trade on exchanges like shares, as SEBI Investor explains.

When comparing equity performance, specify the index and use total return—including dividends where applicable—not a price-only index if the other investments include income.

Fixed deposits: a contract with a particular institution
An FD’s quoted interest rate is not the whole outcome. The institution, tenure, interest compounding or payout schedule, premature-withdrawal rules and tax treatment all affect what the depositor receives and when the money is accessible. Terms differ by product; there is no single market-wide FD rate or universal liquidity rule established here.

Compare the FD’s realized, after-tax return with inflation over the same period. Check the actual offer and its terms rather than assuming that a displayed rate applies to every tenure or withdrawal situation.
Gold: return depends on price and ownership route
Gold does not pay a bond-like coupon. Its return depends on the gold price and how it is held. SEBI identifies physical precious metals and ETFs as possible routes, and notes that economic conditions, geopolitical events and supply and demand can influence gold prices.
Jewellery is not interchangeable with investment gold: making charges, purity and resale terms affect the amount realized. Physical ownership and ETF exposure also have different custody and transaction considerations. Gold has historically been among assets observed to provide returns above inflation over the long term, according to SEBI’s inflation guidance; that observation is not a guarantee for every period or product.

Bonds: income and principal depend on the instrument’s terms
A bond is a loan to a government or company. It may pay coupons and return principal at maturity under its terms. Coupon is not the same as yield to maturity, and a fixed coupon does not keep the bond’s market price fixed. If sold before maturity, the investor’s total return includes any price gain or loss as well as coupon income.
Bond risks include issuer default, interest-rate changes, difficulty selling and early redemption through a call. Ratings are opinions that can change, not a substitute for examining the issuer and the instrument. The SEBI bond guide describes these risks. The RBI explains that bond prices and interest rates generally move in opposite directions: rising yields can pressure existing bond prices, while falling yields may support them (RBI Government Securities FAQ).
A Government of India security held to maturity has different issuer-credit exposure from a corporate bond, but selling it early can still mean a market-price change or limited liquidity. NISM’s description of promised returns for government securities held to maturity is specific to the security’s cash flows; it does not mean every such investment preserves purchasing power after inflation (NISM: Understanding investment risks and returns).

How to make a fair comparison
1. Match the investment period and measure total return
Choose the same start and end dates and an amount you could actually invest in each option. Include equity dividends, bond coupons and reinvestment assumptions; identify the gold route; and account for the FD’s compounding or payout schedule. Compare realized outcomes, not an equity price index with an FD’s annual quote or a bond’s coupon.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNo comparable four-way return series is established here, so a numerical winner cannot be named responsibly. Past performance can inform a comparison, but, as SEBI cautions, “Past Performance vs. Future Potential: While past performance can provide insights, it does not guarantee returns.”
2. Separate income, price movement and risk of loss
Ask what produces the return and what could reduce it. Equities can fall with a company or the market; gold prices fluctuate; bonds can lose market value before maturity or default depending on the issuer; and FD outcomes depend on the institution and contract terms. For bonds, compare issuer credit quality, maturity or duration, yield, secondary-market depth and call terms. For shares, distinguish individual-company exposure from diversified index exposure.

3. Check when and how you can get the money back
Liquidity is not just whether an investment can be sold or withdrawn. Check the price, penalty, spread, buyer availability and timing of the exit. Listed securities sell at prevailing market prices and may have limited trading liquidity; a bond sold before maturity may fetch more or less than its purchase price; an FD may impose early-withdrawal conditions. Verify the specific instrument’s terms rather than assuming access will be immediate or cost-free.
4. Compare purchasing power after taxes and costs
A positive nominal return does not necessarily mean that your money buys more. For each option, estimate the return after applicable taxes and costs, then compare it with inflation over the same period. Tax rules vary by asset, instrument and holding period, so use the current rules that apply to your specific investment rather than a generic tax assumption.
SEBI uses 6% annual inflation as a hypothetical example of how purchasing power erodes; it is not a current inflation reading. The actual inflation rate for your comparison period must be checked separately.

5. Match the choice to the goal, not a headline return
Start with the date you need the money, your capacity to withstand an interim fall, and the role the investment should play. SEBI frames investment decisions around goals, risk tolerance, horizon and circumstances, and identifies safety, return and liquidity as core considerations (SEBI Investor). Diversification can reduce the impact of poor performance in one holding, but it does not remove investment risk; an allocation should fit the investor rather than follow a universal percentage.

- Equities: Identify the shares, fund or ETF; note diversification, fees and whether the return measure includes dividends.
- FDs: Confirm the institution, offered tenure, compounding or payout, premature-withdrawal conditions and applicable tax treatment.
- Gold: Specify physical gold or an ETF; account for purity, custody, purchase and resale costs, and the route’s liquidity.
- Bonds: Check issuer and credit exposure, coupon versus yield, maturity or duration, call terms and the possibility of a loss if sold early.
- Every option: Use the same dates and investment amount; compare after-tax, after-cost total return, inflation-adjusted purchasing power, interim loss risk and access to cash.
Current FD offers, tax treatment, inflation readings and bond yields or prices change over time and by product. Verify them for the date and instrument you are considering before making a numerical comparison.
