Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLet apps run in the background when you rely on them for timely notifications or syncing; leave other apps on your device’s optimized or system-managed setting, and restrict individual apps only when their battery use is a concern. Turning background activity off can delay notifications, syncing, or updates, so check the app afterward. The exact controls vary by operating system, version, device maker, and app.
Which apps should I let run in the background?
Base the choice on what you need an app to do while it is closed—not simply on whether it is installed. A messaging app may need background activity for timely alerts; a file-sync app may need it to keep files current. These are examples, not a universal list: the right setting depends on which functions you rely on.

- Allow more activity for apps where delayed notifications or syncing would cause a real problem.
- Keep the optimized or system-managed setting for apps that do not need to react immediately while closed. This is the prudent default in Microsoft’s Windows guidance and Google’s Pixel guidance.
- Restrict selectively when an app appears to use substantial battery in the background and you can accept delays to its notifications, syncing, or updates.
On Windows 11, Microsoft describes three choices for apps that expose background controls. Their practical trade-offs are:

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Always | Allows background activity and can use more power. | Can continue; delivery still depends on the app and its services. | Can continue; behavior depends on the app. | Available only for apps that expose the control. |
| Power optimized | Windows manages activity to save power; it may limit an app that uses a lot of power. | Windows aims to allow notifications, but behavior can vary. | Windows aims to allow periodic updates, subject to its management. | Windows retains more control; only supported apps expose this setting. |
| Never | Stops the app’s background activity when it is inactive. | May stop or delay notifications until the app is opened. | May stop updates or syncing until the app is opened. | Available only for apps that expose the control. |

How do I stop apps running in the background?
First check which apps are using battery, then change one app’s setting rather than restricting everything at once. Battery drain can have causes beyond background activity, and the available controls depend on the app and device.
- Check battery use. Open your device’s battery-use screen and look for apps using power while not actively in use.
- Choose a candidate. Select an app whose background use seems high and whose alerts or updates can wait.
- Apply the least restrictive suitable option. Prefer optimized or system-managed behavior where available; turn off or restrict background activity for that app only if needed.
- Check the result. Close the app and verify that the notifications, syncing, or updates you care about still happen. If not, restore its previous setting.
There is no reliable cross-platform percentage of battery life that this change will save. The effect varies with the device, app, settings, and other activity.

How do I change background settings on each platform?
Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage.
- Select the app’s More options, then choose Manage background activity.
- Choose Always, Power optimized, or Never, if the app offers those controls.
Windows does not offer this per-app route for every app. Older Windows interfaces and enterprise-managed devices may differ; Microsoft documents separate enterprise controls in its background task resource restrictions guidance.
Android phones and tablets
On Pixel phones, Google’s route is Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Select an app, then open Allow background usage. Google generally recommends keeping the app optimized; disabling optimization can let it run more while unused and consume more battery. See Google’s Pixel battery guidance.

Android menus and controls vary by version and manufacturer. If these labels do not match your device, search Settings for “battery” or consult the device maker’s instructions. Google also notes that Android can pause unused apps, stopping background activity or notifications. To exempt an app where this option is available, open its App Info > Unused apps and turn off Pause app activity if unused. See Google’s guidance on managing unused apps and its broader Android battery guidance.

Apple recommends turning off Background App Refresh as one way to improve battery life. Treat it as a control for app refresh, not a master switch for every task an app may perform: iOS uses different background strategies depending on the task, and it may limit or schedule background time. Apple explains those distinctions in its battery performance guidance and its background-task documentation.

Apple’s support route for the feature it documents is Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions > Background App Activity. Switch off an app only if you can accept that automatic updates or syncing may stop. If it no longer works as expected, re-enable it or ask the developer which background activity the app requires.
Apple’s cited support page describes a macOS 27 feature, so availability depends on the macOS release installed; readers on other releases may not see the same control. See Apple’s background-app support instructions.

Will restricting background apps stop notifications?
It can. On Windows, Microsoft says choosing Never stops an app’s background activity while it is inactive, so notifications or updates may not arrive until the app is opened. On Android, battery restrictions or the system’s handling of unused apps can limit background work or notifications. On Apple devices, Background App Refresh controls refresh rather than every background function, so its effect depends on the app and task.
If prompt alerts matter, test the app after changing its setting. Also remember that notifications and background activity are separate controls: changing one does not necessarily change the other, and delivery can depend on the app’s own settings and services.
Which settings are not the same as background activity?
Background activity is not interchangeable with background data, location access, notifications, or startup and login behavior. Each controls a different aspect of what an app can do. If an app still uses battery after you restrict background activity, inspect the device’s battery-use screen and the relevant separate settings rather than assuming one switch governs all app behavior.
