Increase VRAM in Windows 11? What You Can—and Can’t—Change

Windows 11’s shared GPU memory is not extra physical VRAM. Learn how dedicated, shared, and total video memory differ—and what hardware changes can increase dedicated GPU memory.

No Windows 11 setting can turn shared system RAM into physical VRAM on a discrete graphics card. Windows reports dedicated GPU memory separately from shared system memory. Integrated graphics can use system RAM, and some computers may let you reserve a portion for the GPU in firmware—but that option depends on the specific PC.

What “VRAM” and Windows GPU memory figures mean

VRAM usually means memory physically installed on a discrete graphics card. Windows also reports other memory that graphics hardware can use, so its displayed total can be much larger than the card’s onboard VRAM.

Memory figure What it means
Dedicated video memory Memory set aside for graphics use. On a discrete GPU, this can be onboard VRAM. On integrated graphics, it may instead be system memory reserved by firmware or the driver. Microsoft describes a GPU memory segment as memory dedicated to a GPU.
Shared system memory System RAM that Windows and the graphics driver may make available for graphics work. It is not extra physical VRAM installed on a discrete graphics card.
Total video memory An accounting total that combines dedicated video memory, dedicated system memory, and shared system memory. It does not mean the GPU has that much onboard VRAM. Microsoft explains how Windows calculates graphics memory.

Microsoft’s Windows graphics-memory examples illustrate why the figures can be confusing. A Surface laptop with Intel Iris graphics running Windows 11 is shown with 128 MB of dedicated onboard graphics memory and 16,296 MB of shared system memory. A desktop with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 running Windows 10 is shown with 8,192 MB of dedicated onboard graphics memory and 24,532 MB of shared system memory. These are documentation examples, not universal values or evidence that all the reported shared memory is being used. The examples page was last updated August 30, 2024. See Microsoft’s examples of graphics memory reporting.

Can you increase VRAM in Windows 11?

If you have a discrete graphics card

No Windows setting can increase the card’s physical VRAM. Changing a reported shared-memory figure does not add memory to the graphics card, and adding system RAM increases system-memory capacity—not the card’s dedicated VRAM.

If you have integrated graphics

Integrated graphics can use system memory because they do not rely on a separate card’s onboard VRAM in the same way. A particular PC’s firmware may offer a setting to reserve some system RAM for graphics, but the option and its location vary by model. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish a universal Windows setting or BIOS/UEFI procedure, so check the documentation for your exact computer or motherboard rather than following generic menu instructions.

Why shared memory is not the same as dedicated VRAM

Shared memory is system RAM made available to graphics workloads; it remains system memory rather than physical memory on a discrete GPU. Windows and the graphics driver manage graphics allocations and where resources reside. An amount shown as available or as a maximum does not guarantee that an application can use all of it at once: per-process GPU memory budgets can change over time, particularly under memory pressure. Microsoft describes these allocation and residency behaviors in its documentation on video memory offer and reclaim and driver residency in WDDM 2.0.

What to do if an application needs more GPU memory

  • Check what GPU the computer has. Distinguish integrated graphics from a discrete graphics card before interpreting Windows’ memory figures.
  • Do not treat a larger shared-memory total as a VRAM upgrade. It does not change the amount of physical memory on a discrete card.
  • For a compatible desktop, consider a graphics card with onboard VRAM. This is the hardware path that can increase dedicated GPU memory. Verify that the computer can accept the card and that the target workload benefits from more dedicated memory; the right choice depends on both, and no single card can be recommended without those details.
  • For a laptop or an integrated-graphics PC, check the manufacturer’s documentation. Whether firmware allows a reserved-memory adjustment is model-specific. The cited Microsoft material does not establish that changing a reservation improves application performance.
