To add pixels to an image in Photoshop, open Image > Image Size, enable Resample, enter the target pixel dimensions, and choose an enlargement method. Changing PPI with Resample off only changes the print size represented by the existing pixels; it does not add detail. Any enlargement estimates new pixels, so inspect the result at its intended screen or print size and keep the original.
First decide whether you need more pixels or a different print size
Image dimensions, pixel density, and physical print size are related. Physical size equals pixel dimensions divided by resolution: for example, Adobe’s Photoshop documentation shows that a 400 × 400-pixel image at 100 ppi prints at 4 × 4 inches, while the same pixels at 200 ppi print at 2 × 2 inches. With Resample off, changing resolution or print dimensions leaves the pixel count unchanged.

For screen use, the image’s pixel dimensions determine how much image data is available; a PPI metadata value alone does not create pixels or determine how many screen pixels display the image. For print, PPI describes how densely those pixels are placed at a chosen physical size. Adobe describes 300 ppi as typical for professional printing, not as a universal requirement: follow the output provider’s specifications and consider viewing distance.

Enlarge with Image Size
- Open the image and choose Image > Image Size. Check its current pixel dimensions before editing.
- Turn on Resample to change the pixel count. Enter the target width and height under Pixel Dimensions. Keep the aspect-ratio link enabled unless you deliberately want to stretch or compress the image.
- Choose a resampling method from the Resample menu. The available choices include Automatic, Preserve Details 2.0, Preserve Details (enlargement), Bicubic Smoother (enlargement), Bicubic Sharper (reduction), Bicubic, Bilinear, and Nearest Neighbor.
- Inspect at 100% and at the final intended display or print size. Check for softness, halos, blockiness, noise, or invented-looking texture. Save the enlarged version as a copy.
Adobe advises avoiding repeated resampling and doing it only once where possible. If you only need to specify a different print size while retaining every source pixel, leave Resample off and adjust the physical dimensions or PPI instead.

Choose a method for the source and the job
Photoshop resampling methods
For enlargement, Preserve Details 2.0 and Preserve Details (enlargement) are the named detail-oriented options; Preserve Details 2.0 also has a Reduce Noise slider. Adobe labels Enable Preserve Details 2.0 Upscale a technology preview, so check your installed Photoshop version and preferences if the option is missing. Bicubic Smoother is also designated for enlargement, while Bicubic Sharper is designated for reduction. Nearest Neighbor is intended for hard-edged pixel art or graphics; it is generally a poor fit for ordinary photographs.
Camera Raw Super Resolution
For a supported photograph, Camera Raw’s Enhance > Super Resolution workflow can double the width and height, producing four times the total pixel count. Adobe documents support for file types supported by Raw Details, plus JPEG and TIFF. The enhanced result is created as a DNG, and an image can be enhanced only once.

Open the image through Camera Raw to use this workflow. Adobe says Super Resolution is not available when Camera Raw is invoked inside Photoshop through Filter > Camera Raw Filter. Its doubled dimensions are a software enlargement, not a promise that missing original detail will be recovered.

“Adds creative detail” distinguishes Bloom from a method focused on preserving existing detail. For documentary, archival, product, or evidence images where faithful representation matters, retain the original and do not present generated features as details verified in the source.

Upsampling estimates values for additional pixels from the existing image. It cannot add detail that was not captured in the original. A larger file may look more useful at a particular output size, but interpolation does not turn a low-detail source into a faithful high-detail capture. Sharpening can change perceived crispness; it cannot recover missing capture information.

- Compare the enlarged image with the original at the actual size and distance at which it will be viewed.
- Look for soft edges, halos, jagged lines, blockiness, noise, and textures that appear implausibly specific.
- For a crop, the pixels left after cropping are the source for enlargement. Choose a method based on that remaining image, not the dimensions of the uncropped original.
- If fidelity is more important than apparent detail, prefer a method aimed at preserving existing information over one that generates creative detail.
