Clear the deserters, explore the mine if you want its optional clues and Reinald’s Philter recipe, then defeat possessed Reinald and the Red Miasmal. Your final dialogue choices determine whether the deacon survives and whether Reinald finds peace; the Forgotten Wolven diagrams are available whichever ending you choose.
Before you start
- The quest was added with update 4.0 and is available in versions with that update or later, according to walkthrough sources. A suggested level is 15.
- Find the Eternal Fire deacon outside Devil’s Pit in Velen. Clear the deserters inside the pit before entering the mine.
- The Magic Lamp can reveal ghostly scenes in parts of the mine, but using it depends on having obtained Keira’s Magic Lamp earlier. It is not required to complete the quest.
How to get through Devil’s Pit
Clear the deserters and enter the mine
After speaking with the deacon, deal with the deserters occupying Devil’s Pit and proceed to the mine entrance. Once inside, Witcher Senses help you locate clues and points of interest.

Explore before following the voice
At an early fork, a voice urges Geralt toward the right-hand route. The other passage is a longer, optional detour. Exploring it can reveal the recipe for Reinald’s Philter and additional history about the mine. The philter is not mandatory for finishing the quest.
Inspect the mine’s rooms and read Reinald’s letters, the Forgotten Priest’s Testament, and related evidence. These clues explain what happened there and may provide context for later dialogue. If you want to see ghostly scenes, use the Magic Lamp where the game allows it.

How to defeat possessed Reinald and the Red Miasmal
Possessed Reinald
The mine leads to a fight with possessed Reinald. Defeat him to continue to the Red Miasmal encounter.
Red Miasmal
The Red Miasmal uses claw swipes and a fire attack. As its health falls, it summons Plague Victims. Evade attacks when they are telegraphed, and deal with the summoned enemies when they engage rather than letting them overwhelm you.

After defeating the Red Miasmal, speak with Reinald. Obtain the diagrams during this conversation, then decide whether to involve the deacon. The outcomes differ in three ways: the deacon’s survival, whether Reinald finds peace or is forcibly laid to rest, and whether you receive the deacon’s payment.

How to improve your chances of defending the deacon
Optional evidence and the conversation about the priest who stayed behind can affect which responses are available. If you want to pursue the peaceful outcome, explore the mine and read the notes before moving the conversation forward. When the choice comes, defend the deacon rather than agreeing with Reinald’s accusation.
