There is no universally best way to vote. Choose among the options available for your election by weighing your schedule, travel and accessibility needs, and whether you can meet the rules for requesting and returning a mail ballot. State and local election offices set the details; check the rules for your location and election before making a plan.
What each voting method means
Election Day in-person voting
You vote at a location and during hours assigned or permitted by your jurisdiction on Election Day. Check where to go, when it is open, what identification may be required, and what assistance is available before you leave. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s voter guidance explains that these details vary.

Early in-person voting
You cast your ballot in person before Election Day, if your jurisdiction offers the option. The dates, hours, locations, and rules about which voting site you may use are local. Confirm them with your election office rather than assuming that an early-voting site follows Election Day rules.

Mail voting arrangements differ by state and territory. You may need to request an absentee ballot, meet an eligibility condition, or use a ballot sent through an all-mail program; some voters must submit a new request for each election. The name used for a method does not by itself establish who qualifies or how to obtain a ballot. Check the EAC’s overview of voting and mail and your election office’s current instructions.

Terminology can also blur distinctions. The U.S. Department of Justice describes early voting as typically available to eligible voters, while in-person absentee voting is typically limited to voters who qualify to cast a mail ballot. These are general descriptions, not a determination of the rules in your jurisdiction. See the DOJ’s voting-rights guidance.
How to choose a method
- Confirm what you can use. Check that you are registered at the correct address and find out which methods are available to you for this particular election. If you plan to vote by mail, verify whether you are eligible, whether you must request a ballot, and whether the request must be renewed for each election. Start with the EAC’s voter resources, then confirm details with your state or local election office.
- Match the method to your schedule and travel. If you can get to a voting site on Election Day, that may be a straightforward option. Early in-person voting can offer another date where available. A mail ballot can be useful if you expect to be away or cannot reach a site, but only if you can receive it and return it under the applicable rules.
- Build in time for a mail ballot. Treat the ballot-request deadline and ballot-return deadline as separate dates. Check whether your ballot must be postmarked or received by the return deadline. The EAC relays the U.S. Postal Service’s recommendation to mail a ballot at least one week before the state deadline; that is a delivery buffer, not a replacement for your jurisdiction’s deadline. Some jurisdictions allow drop-box or in-person return, but locations and availability must be verified locally. The EAC’s mail-voting guidance covers these considerations.
- Follow the ballot and envelope instructions exactly. Read the return envelope carefully and complete every requested field. Depending on your jurisdiction, a witness or notary signature may be required, and postage may or may not be prepaid. Many states offer online ballot-status tracking; check whether yours does and how to access it. See the EAC’s guidance on returning and tracking a mail ballot.
- Include accessibility and language needs in the decision. Ask your election office about accessible voting machines, assistance, curbside voting where offered, accessible ballot formats, language support, and accessible ways to request, mark, and return a mail ballot. Voters have relevant rights, but the available service and process must be confirmed locally. The U.S. Department of Justice’s voting and disability guidance explains protections and access considerations.
- Ask before changing plans. Do not assume that receiving a mail ballot automatically prevents you from voting in person, or that you can switch methods in the same way everywhere. Contact your election office before attempting to change plans; local procedures may require you to return an uncast ballot, exchange it, or take another step. The EAC directs voters to election officials for jurisdiction-specific answers.

How common is in-person voting?
More than two-thirds of voters nationwide cast ballots in person in 2022, either through early voting or on Election Day, according to a 2025 report by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. This historical national figure combines the two in-person methods; it does not describe current shares or show that one method is better. See the EAC’s studies and reports.

Privacy when voting by mail
Election officials can record whether you cast a ballot without knowing how you voted. The EAC puts it this way: “Election officials keep a record of whether you cast a ballot, but they are never able to tell how you voted.” The statement appears on the EAC’s How do I vote by mail? page, dated December 23, 2025.

- Ballot Box for Classroom Activities: The ballot box gathers written choices inside a paperboard body, helping teachers keep submitted slips separate from worksheets and other classroom materials during group activities instead of leaving them in loose desk piles
