Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore buying gold jewelry, verify what the seller says the piece is, check the marks required or customary in the country where it is sold, and make sure the invoice records its purity and weight. A stamp or a magnifying glass can help you inspect a mark, but neither proves on its own that the piece is genuine. If the claim remains uncertain, seek an official identifier check or independent assay where available.
Start with the seller’s exact claim
Ask whether the piece is a gold alloy throughout, hollow gold, gold-filled, gold overlay, rolled gold plate, or gold electroplate. These terms are not interchangeable. In particular, “solid gold” means the item is not hollow; it does not mean pure gold. A karat mark describes the gold content of an alloy, while filled and plated descriptions refer to a gold layer over base metal.

In U.S. guidance, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says gold-filled, gold overlay, and rolled gold plate describe at least 10-karat gold mechanically applied to base metal. Gold electroplate describes at least 10-karat gold applied electrolytically, with a minimum thickness specified in the FTC guidance. Thin layers can wear with use; the FTC says the mark should state the fraction of karat gold when the layer is less than one-twentieth of the item’s metal weight. Read the full definitions and marking rules in the FTC’s jewelry-buying guidance. These U.S. descriptions should not be treated as a universal labeling code.

Understand karat and fineness
Karat and fineness both express the proportion of gold in an alloy. Karat uses 24 parts as the whole: the FTC’s examples are 18K, or 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals, and 14K, or 14 parts gold and 10 parts other metals. Fineness expresses gold content in parts per thousand: for example, 750 means 750 parts gold per 1,000. The numbers and marks you encounter depend on the market, so verify the convention applicable where you are buying rather than assuming a stamp has the same legal meaning everywhere. The World Gold Council’s overview of gold hallmarks notes that marking conventions vary; in the U.S., caratage may also be shown on signage near the jewelry or provided verbally.

Check marks against the country of sale
United States
FTC consumer guidance says to check for a karat quality mark and the name or U.S.-registered trademark of the company responsible for the mark near it. The FTC advises against buying a piece if the trademark is missing. This is U.S. consumer guidance, not a rule that can be applied to every country. Read the FTC’s advice on gold jewelry marks and assess the seller’s documentation as well as the stamp.
United Kingdom
UK Government guidance describes a full hallmark as three compulsory components: the sponsor’s or maker’s mark, a metal-and-fineness mark, and an Assay Office mark. A date letter is optional. Fineness is given in parts per thousand; the government identifies 375 as the minimum fineness for 9-carat gold. Under the summarized UK rules, gold items below 1 gram are exempt from compulsory hallmarking; qualifying items at or above that threshold generally require the recognized hallmark. Check the current details in the UK Government’s hallmarking guidance summary.

India
BIS describes the HUID-era hallmark as the BIS logo, purity in caratage and fineness, and a six-character alphanumeric HUID. For jewelry bearing an HUID, use the BIS CARE app’s “Verify HUID” feature to check the identifier before purchase. Follow the Bureau of Indian Standards’ current consumer protection guidance and hallmarking FAQ for current verification information; app workflows may change.
Use a practical pre-purchase checklist
- Get the description in writing. Ask the seller to specify the metal claim and whether the piece is solid, hollow, filled, overlay, or electroplated.
- Read the mark clearly. Good light and a 10× jeweler’s loupe can make tiny letters and numbers easier to see. BIS says jewellers should have magnification of at least 10× available to show a hallmark. A loupe only helps you read the mark; it does not test the metal or prove the mark is authentic. See the BIS consumer FAQ.
- Compare all expected components for that market. For example, check the sponsor, fineness, and assay-office components for a UK full hallmark; the BIS logo, purity, and HUID for HUID-marked Indian jewelry; or the karat mark and nearby responsible-company trademark under FTC consumer guidance in the U.S.
- Use an official lookup when available. For an Indian item carrying an HUID, check it with BIS CARE’s “Verify HUID” feature. Do not rely on a photograph of the mark alone.
- Make the invoice specific. Ask it to record the article description, net precious-metal weight, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges. BIS lists these details for invoices for hallmarked precious-metal articles in its consumer FAQ.
- Check the seller and the exit terms. Research the seller and complaints or reviews, and get the return policy in writing, as the FTC recommends in its consumer guidance.
- Ask about independent testing if anything does not add up. In India, consumers can submit jewelry or a sample to a BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre for chargeable testing and receive an assay report identifying the sample as marked. Consult BIS consumer protection guidance for details.
What a stamp or visual inspection cannot establish
A legible stamp tells you what the piece is represented as, not whether that representation is true. A loupe can reveal whether the expected characters appear to be present, but it cannot establish alloy composition, detect a misleading mark, or authenticate the stamp. A digital HUID check or a recognized assay adds a verification route where available; it does not make one country’s hallmark rules apply elsewhere.

If an Indian hallmark does not match the tested purity
BIS states that if hallmarked jewelry is found below its marked purity, the buyer is entitled to compensation equal to two times the amount of the difference calculated on the basis of the purity shortage for the weight sold, plus testing charges. This is the consumer protection described by BIS for India; it should not be assumed to apply in other countries. See BIS’s consumer protection page.
