Import Failed Halfway? What Happens to Your Data

A halfway import failure can leave different results depending on the tool. Check logs and the destination before retrying, restoring, or cleaning up.

A failed import does not necessarily mean nothing was written. Depending on the product and import method, the system may roll back everything, keep records or batches already committed, or let you resume from a checkpoint. Check the import log and destination before retrying: a second run could duplicate or overwrite work that succeeded in the first run.

What can happen when an import stops?

There are three common outcomes, and they are product-specific rather than universal:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Full rollback: the importer restores the target to its pre-import state.
  • Partial commit: successfully imported rows or records remain, while later work is missing; unchanged existing data may also remain.
  • Checkpoint and resume: the tool records progress so an incomplete import can continue rather than start over.

For example, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations says an unsuccessful database import automatically rolls back and restores the target sandbox to its pre-import state. By contrast, SAP documents that a failed DATA ONLY import leaves data already imported into the target table in place. These examples describe those specific products and modes—not a rule that applies to every importer. Microsoft Dynamics 365 guidance; SAP HANA import guidance.

Salesforce B2C Commerce gives another example of partial results: its recovery guidance says, “If a job dies part way through an import, the database contains whatever data was successfully imported and any old data that wasn’t changed or removed.” That statement applies to the documented B2C Commerce process. How do you tell what was imported?

  1. Open the job or operation log. Find the failed run and identify where it stopped. Dynamics 365 directs administrators to environment change-history logs; Power Apps provides an import log.
  2. Read the record-level results, if available. Power Apps import logs show counts for successful, failed, and partially failed records, with tabs for reviewing affected records. Use those results to identify what needs attention rather than assuming every record failed. Power Apps import guidance.
  3. Inspect the destination. Check for records, rows, or batches added or changed by the failed run. Compare against a known pre-import state or source file where possible, and account for updates as well as newly created records.
  4. Confirm the import mode’s failure behavior. Look for documented transaction, batch-commit, rollback, and resume behavior for the exact product and method you used.

Should you retry the import?

Not until you know what the first attempt committed. If it partially succeeded, rerunning the same input may create duplicate records, overwrite newer values, or trigger other side effects, depending on how the importer matches and updates records. Reconcile the destination with the import log first, then follow the product’s documented retry or recovery procedure.

If the tool supports checkpoints, determine whether it saved usable state and follow its resume procedure. InfluxDB 3 Enterprise documents that, when an unhandled error occurs, its import plugin can save a paused state; with that state available, incomplete tables can continue from checkpoints. If no import state exists, the documented behavior is to restart from the beginning. InfluxDB 3 Enterprise import plugin documentation.

When is cleanup or restoration needed?

Some incomplete imports may leave a destination that requires cleanup before it is safe to use or retry. MySQL NDB advises preparing for cleanup after an unsuccessful import, potentially including dropping tables or databases. Do not apply those steps automatically: use the instructions for your target system, and preserve a recoverable copy when its recovery procedure calls for one. MySQL NDB import documentation.

Likewise, do not assume every failed import should be rolled back manually. A platform may already have performed a full rollback, while another may retain committed rows. First establish the current state, then choose the documented recovery path for that system.

What should you check before a large import?

  • Whether the importer commits atomically or commits per row, batch, or stage.
  • Whether the log exposes partial success and identifies affected records.
  • Whether retry starts over or resumes from a checkpoint.
  • Which restore or cleanup steps the product documents.
  • Whether transaction-log capacity is sufficient for the operation.

For SQL Server bulk imports, logging behavior depends in part on the recovery model and table conditions. That can affect transaction-log capacity during a large operation, but it is a planning consideration—not a universal cause of halfway failures. SQL Server bulk-import logging prerequisites.

Why the exact recovery steps depend on the importer

“Import” can mean a database restore, a table load, an application data migration, or a file upload. The outcome also depends on the import mode and transaction settings. Without the product, method, and failure stage, there is no reliable universal command or cleanup procedure. Use the system’s log and recovery documentation to determine whether to resume, reconcile, restore, or clean up.
