Your five-card hand must rank higher than your two-card hand. You win the main wager only by beating the bank in both matching comparisons; win one and lose one and the result is generally a push under the cited rules. The exact Joker, tie, and hand-setting rules vary, so check the rules posted at the table before you play.
How a Pai Gow Poker hand works
- Place your wager. The main wager is the basic game bet. A table may also offer side bets or progressive wagers, but their availability and terms are table-specific.
- Receive seven cards. In the Nevada STAX rules, the game uses a 53-card pack with one Joker. Other variants and local rules may differ. Nevada Gaming Control Board rules
- Set two hands. Use five cards for the high hand and two for the low hand. The high hand must outrank the low hand; reversing that order fouls the hand under the cited rules. The Casino Real rules state that the five-card hand must rank higher than the two-card hand. Casino Real rules
- The bank sets its cards. The dealer or bank arranges its seven cards according to the applicable house way—the table’s prescribed setting method.
- Compare matching hands. Your five-card hand is compared with the bank’s five-card hand, and your two-card hand with its two-card hand. Winning both wins the main wager; losing both loses it. Winning one and losing one generally pushes under the cited Nevada and Casino Real rules. Ties, copy hands, commission, and payout terms depend on the table’s rules. What beats what?
The five-card hand uses poker categories, but some Pai Gow rules add ordering details that are easy to miss. Pennsylvania’s regulation lists this descending order: five aces, royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, and pair. It places A-2-3-4-5 as the second-highest straight and specifies special ordering for straight flushes. Those details are from Pennsylvania’s regulated game and should not be assumed to govern every table. Pennsylvania Code, § 645a.6

For the two-card hand, a pair beats a non-pair; if neither hand is a pair, compare the higher card first and then the lower card. Check the casino’s rules for the precise tie treatment. Pagat’s Pai Gow Poker rules
What does the Joker do?
Do not assume the Joker is fully wild. Under Nevada’s cited STAX rules, it can complete a straight, flush, or straight flush, or count as an Ace when used alone. Pennsylvania’s code permits it as an Ace or to complete a straight, flush, straight flush, or royal flush. How to set your seven cards
The aim is to balance the two hands without breaking the mandatory ranking order. Keep a strong five-card hand while giving the two-card hand useful strength when the cards allow it. Do not move a stronger poker combination into the two-card hand if that makes it outrank the five-card hand. No general rule guarantees the best split for every combination or rule set; the dealer’s house way governs the bank, while player-setting charts are specific to their stated rules.
A casino-specific example: Casino Real
Casino Real’s approved chart says to use the pair-in-front principle with a complete hand behind when possible, but its two-pair and four-of-a-kind instructions include rank-dependent exceptions. That is a Casino Real example, not a universal chart. Ask the dealer for the current house way at the venue you are playing, and use only a chart that matches that table’s rules. A different named-property example: MGM Grand
The Wizard of Odds page for MGM Grand describes different two-pair and four-of-a-kind decisions from the Casino Real chart. It says its chart came from a 2002 game-procedure document and was last updated August 3, 2026. - How the Joker may be used.
- Which house way applies to the bank hand.
- How ties and copy hands are resolved.
- Whether a commission or other payout adjustment applies, and how wins are paid.
- Which side bets or progressive wagers are offered, if any, and their terms.
- Whether the game is conventional Pai Gow Poker or a variant, such as face-up or progressive Pai Gow.
The cited Nevada document describes a particular STAX progressive offering; its progressive paytable and reset values are not general odds for Pai Gow Poker. The available rules do not establish one universal house edge, current minimum bets, or terms across casinos, so do not treat any such figure as applying everywhere.

You can practice the deal and hand-setting sequence at home with a standard 53-card deck containing one Joker, as specified in the Nevada STAX rules. Deal seven cards, arrange five behind and two in front, then check that the high hand outranks the low hand. For real play, use the rules and chart for the specific table rather than assuming a practice split is universally correct. Nevada Gaming Control Board rules
