To use the iMovie green screen effect, place footage recorded against a green or blue backdrop over a background clip or still image, then choose Green/Blue Screen. iMovie removes the selected backdrop color so the background beneath it shows through. The controls differ between Mac and iPhone or iPad.
Choose green or blue, then choose a background
Pick a screen color that contrasts with the subject: record against blue if the subject is green or wearing green, and against green if the subject is blue or wearing blue. Apple documents video clips and still images as backgrounds; on Mac, solid-color and animated backgrounds are also supported. The effect works by removing the selected color from the foreground overlay, revealing the clip below it. See Apple’s background guide.

Select the green- or blue-screen footage, then drag it above the background clip. Release when the green Add (+) icon appears.

Select the foreground overlay. If the controls are not visible, show Video Overlay Settings, then choose Green/Blue Screen from the overlay menu.

Check the frame under the playhead. When you select the effect, iMovie uses the dominant color in that frame as the color to remove. If the frame is not representative of the rest of the shot, move the playhead to a better frame and reapply the effect.

Click Apply in the Green/Blue Screen controls.

Refine the result with Softness to adjust edge softness, Crop to isolate the subject area, or Clean-up to brush away stray areas that should not show through. Adjust Softness before using Clean-up: changing Softness afterward resets the cleanup selection.

How to use green screen in iMovie on iPhone or iPad

Open a movie project and add the background clip or still image.

Scroll the timeline until the playhead is over the background at the point where the foreground should begin.

Tap Add Media, choose the video or photo, select the green-screen foreground clip, then tap More and Green/Blue Screen. iMovie adds the foreground above the background.

In the viewer, tap Auto to select the green or blue automatically, or tap the color in the clip to choose it manually.

Select the overlay to refine it. Tap Adjust and move the Strength slider to change how much of the screen color is removed. Tap Mask and drag its corners to exclude parts of the overlay. If iMovie selected the wrong color, reset and select the intended color.

Trim or move the background to fit the foreground’s duration. Apple notes that connected clips move together when rearranged.

The wrong color disappears
On Mac, the selected color is based on the dominant color in the frame under the playhead when you select the effect. Move the playhead to a representative frame and reapply. On iPhone or iPad, use manual color selection if Auto chose incorrectly.

Unwanted parts of the frame show through
On Mac, use Crop to isolate the subject or Clean-up to brush away stray areas. On iPhone or iPad, adjust the Mask to exclude portions of the overlay.
Changing the edge or cleanup makes the result worse
On Mac, set Softness before using Clean-up. If you change Softness afterward, the cleanup selection resets, so apply Clean-up again.
The audio sounds doubled or competing
On Mac, audio from the foreground and original clip plays simultaneously. Lower the volume of either clip if one should be heard more clearly.

Practical recording advice
Even illumination and some separation between the subject and backdrop may help produce a cleaner-looking result. This is practical production advice, not a requirement stated in Apple’s workflow documentation; the result can vary with the footage.
