Immutable Linux Desktops: Why I’d Choose One Over Ubuntu

Atomic desktops make system updates deployment-based and separate many apps and development tools from the OS. Compare Silverblue and Aeon before switching from Ubuntu.

If what you want is for operating-system updates to arrive as a coherent deployment—with a previous deployment available to return to—an immutable or atomic desktop is a strong first choice. That is a preference for a different update and recovery workflow, not proof that Ubuntu is unreliable or a better fit for everyone.

What changes when you move from Ubuntu to an atomic desktop?

On a conventional Linux desktop, system packages are generally installed into the live operating system. Atomic desktops organize system changes around a deployment or transaction instead. Updates typically become active after a reboot, rather than changing the running system piece by piece. Fedora describes Silverblue updates as applying the system in one go, with a previous version kept available; that is the Fedora Project’s account of its design, not a guarantee that every update is bug-free. The practical appeal is consistency: if an update causes trouble, you have a prior system state to return to, and a failed update is less likely to leave the base operating system half-changed. You still need to install updates, reboot when required, and check that your applications and hardware work with the new deployment.

How do you install apps and development tools?

Graphical applications: Flatpak

Silverblue’s intended workflow is to install many desktop applications as Flatpaks, which are managed separately from the base operating system. This keeps routine app installation from becoming routine modification of the OS image. Check that the applications you depend on are available in a suitable Flatpak form and that their permissions and integration meet your needs. Fedora Silverblue

Development environments: Toolbx

For command-line tools, compilers, and development dependencies, Silverblue provides Toolbx containers. You can work in a conventional package-managed environment without installing every development dependency into the host system. This approach suits many workflows, but it requires comfort with a container-based boundary between the host and development environment. Fedora Silverblue

System-level packages: RPM layering

Some software or hardware support may need packages integrated with the host. Silverblue allows local RPM layering through rpm-ostree, a system that combines libostree and libdnf. Layering changes the deployment, so you reboot to use the resulting system. Before switching, identify any drivers, utilities, or specialist applications you currently install system-wide and confirm that the new workflow supports them. rpm-ostree documentation

Silverblue or Aeon: which workflow fits?

Desktop System updates Apps and development Important consideration
Fedora Silverblue rpm-ostree deployments; updates take effect after reboot, with a previous version available. The Fedora Project says each version receives updates for approximately 13 months. Fedora Project Flatpak for graphical apps, Toolbx for development, and RPM layering for host-level needs. Fedora Project Assess its GNOME desktop, Fedora release/support cadence, application availability, and whether you need layered RPMs.
openSUSE Aeon Transactional updates are described as automated daily updates that do not affect the running system until reboot. Aeon project Flatpak for apps and Distrobox configured to launch Tumbleweed containers. Aeon project The project page labels Aeon a release candidate. Check its current status and decide whether that maturity level suits your desktop.

These are not identical implementations. Silverblue uses an OSTree-based deployment model; Aeon describes a transactional-update approach. Compare the actual application and hardware support you need, not just the shared idea of an atomic base. Aeon’s release-candidate label is time-sensitive and should be checked on its current project page.

Is Ubuntu Core the same kind of desktop alternative?

Not necessarily. Ubuntu’s overview describes Ubuntu Core’s A/B image updates and presents it primarily in the context of IoT and single-purpose systems, rather than as a direct mainstream Ubuntu desktop replacement. Aeon adds a desktop environment to its approach, but its project maturity needs to be considered separately. The Ubuntu overview is older background, so it should not be treated as a current release-status source. Ubuntu: Ubuntu Core as an immutable Linux Desktop base

How to decide whether to switch

  • Check your essential software. Confirm that your daily graphical applications work as Flatpaks or through another supported route.
  • Inventory host-level needs. Find out whether your drivers, specialist utilities, or work applications require system packages, and whether layering is practical.
  • Try the development model. Decide whether Toolbx or Distrobox fits your CLI and build-tool habits better than installing dependencies directly on the host.
  • Consider reboot timing. Updates that activate on reboot fit best if you can restart when convenient and are comfortable managing deployment changes.
  • Choose the project and desktop deliberately. Compare GNOME and Fedora’s workflow with Aeon’s update model and current release-candidate status, as well as the support cadence you want.

For readers who want the OS itself to change in controlled deployments while apps and development environments remain more separate, Silverblue is a practical place to start evaluating atomic desktops. Aeon offers another route, but its current project status matters. Neither choice establishes that Ubuntu is worse for every user; the deciding question is whether the update model and software workflow match your own needs.
