IMAX with Laser vs. Regular IMAX: What’s the Difference?

“Regular IMAX” often means older digital Xenon projection, but the label is ambiguous. Here’s how Laser differs—and how to check the format at your theatre.

“Regular IMAX” is not a precise technical name. If you mean an older digital IMAX auditorium, the likely comparison is IMAX with Laser versus IMAX Xenon. IMAX says Laser delivers brighter, clearer images, higher contrast, a wider color gamut and deeper blacks, but the sources available do not establish independent measurements of the size of those differences. IMAX 70mm film is a separate presentation format, not another name for Laser.

What does “regular IMAX” mean?

IMAX with Laser is IMAX’s commercial laser-based digital projection system. “Regular IMAX” is informal shorthand and can mean different things; in this comparison, it usually means an older digital IMAX auditorium using Xenon projection. IMAX introduced its Xenon system in 2008 and says it continues to support existing installations, though it no longer offers Xenon for new signings. IMAX Corporation’s SEC filing describes the systems and installed-base support.

Because the shorthand is ambiguous, the word “IMAX” on a ticket or theatre sign alone does not tell you which projection system is in use. Nor does it specify whether the film is being projected digitally or on film.

IMAX with Laser vs. Xenon IMAX

What you’re comparing IMAX with Laser Older digital IMAX (“regular,” when used to mean Xenon)
Projection system Laser-based digital projection Often Xenon-based digital projection
Image characteristics IMAX claims greater brightness and clarity, higher contrast, a wider color gamut and deeper blacks than other digital projection technologies. IMAX uses its Laser system as the comparison point; the cited material does not give a corresponding measurement for every Xenon auditorium.
Resolution description IMAX’s 2015 launch announcement described Laser as a 4K projection system. A comparable resolution figure for every Xenon auditorium is not stated in the cited material.
Sound The 2015 launch announcement associated the experience with 12-channel sound. Configuration may depend on the venue; a comparable specification is not stated in the cited material.

The image advantages are IMAX’s stated claims, not a quantified independent comparison. The sources do not establish how large the brightness, contrast or color difference is in a representative pair of auditoriums. Likewise, IMAX’s 4K system description does not establish that every film shown there has a 4K source or is mastered identically. The 12-channel figure describes the launch system; it is not a guarantee that every venue has identical equipment or acoustics. IMAX’s April 1, 2015 announcement gives those system descriptions.

Laser is not the same as IMAX 70mm film

Laser and Xenon are digital projection systems; 70mm is a film presentation format. A title can have separate Laser and 70mm IMAX venue listings, so “IMAX with Laser” should not be read as “IMAX film.” Check the format listed for the specific title and location. For example, IMAX’s September 26, 2025 listing for One Battle After Another separated participating Laser and 70mm film theatres and described that title’s presentations as featuring a 1.43:1 expanded aspect ratio. That aspect-ratio detail applies to the title-specific listing, not to Laser as a universal specification. See IMAX’s title-specific listing.

How to check whether your IMAX theatre has Laser

  1. Open the film’s current IMAX title page. Look for the participating theatres or format information; some title pages distinguish Laser venues from 70mm film venues.
  2. Check the exact theatre and screening with the exhibitor. Use the auditorium or screening details in the local listing rather than assuming every IMAX screen at that venue uses the same system.
  3. Confirm the presentation format if it matters to you. Laser, Xenon and 70mm film describe different things, so look for the specific format attached to the showtime.

Availability varies by theatre and title. An October 27, 2025 agreement between IMAX and Cinemark covered 17 locations, including four new Laser systems in the United States, 12 system upgrades and three additional 70mm film activations. The announcement said the upgrades would make Cinemark’s U.S. IMAX footprint IMAX with Laser; it is an announced agreement, not confirmation that every listed project had been completed by a later date.
