I’m an Architect. I Built an AI Agent That Draws and Outputs IFC Models

An AI agent can turn language into IFC modeling operations, but convincing geometry is not enough: the exported model must also carry usable semantics and work in its target BIM application.

An AI agent can turn a design request into an IFC model by translating language into controlled modeling operations, then writing the resulting objects, properties, and relationships into an IFC file. The difficult part is not making geometry appear on screen: it is producing structured data that another BIM application can interpret and use.

What an AI agent has to produce

IFC is not simply a file extension for a 3D drawing. It is a structured, vendor-neutral schema for describing built assets: objects, their properties, and how they relate to one another. buildingSMART International describes IFC as a standardized digital description of the built-asset industry and says it enables machine interpretation and workflow automation.

That distinction changes what “draw” means. A wall-shaped solid is geometry. A useful IFC wall also needs to be represented as the right kind of object, placed in the right spatial context, and connected to relevant relationships and properties. A model can look convincing while missing those semantics.

IFC can be serialized as .ifc, .ifcXML, or .ifcZIP. For exchanging IFC 2×3, IFC 4, and IFC 4.3, buildingSMART recommends the STEP Physical File Format, usually the .ifc form. Its official page lists IFC 4.3.2.0, commonly called IFC 4.3, as the latest official release and identifies it with ISO 16739-1:2024. The same page reports that IFC 4.3 includes over 1,300 entities and approximately 2,500 properties organized into more than 750 sets; buildingSMART does not state a publication year for those counts on the page.

How I would connect a design request to IFC

The useful mental model is not “let a chatbot draw whatever it imagines.” It is a language interface in front of a constrained set of modeling and IFC operations. The agent interprets intent, asks for missing information when necessary, invokes tools, and checks the result.

  1. Turn the request into explicit requirements. Resolve ambiguities such as units, dimensions, storey count, object types, and placement before creating entities. A request that leaves these open should trigger clarification or use clearly stated defaults.
  2. Map requirements to model operations. Represent each intended element as a specific object and define how it belongs in the spatial structure. Keep the agent’s available actions explicit rather than allowing unbounded generated code to modify the model without checks.
  3. Create or edit IFC data through a suitable tool layer. Libraries and authoring integrations can expose operations for creating, querying, or editing IFC entities. The language model should orchestrate those operations; the IFC schema and the tools should determine what data is valid.
  4. Inspect the structured result. Check entity types, placements, properties, and relationships as well as the visible geometry. A successful tool call is not proof that the model is complete.
  5. Export and validate the file. Validate against the intended IFC schema or model view, then open the export in the actual application and workflow where it will be used.

This is a build pattern, not a claim that every agent uses the same software stack. A published adjacent example, MCP4IFC, connects an AI client to an MCP server and a Blender add-on; it uses IfcOpenShell for IFC data and Bonsai to connect the model with Blender’s scene. Its authors describe tools for querying, creating, and editing IFC data, as well as code generation for tasks beyond the predefined tools. That paper demonstrates a possible architecture, not the identity or implementation of the agent in this article’s title.

Why the model can look right and still be wrong

The main failure mode is a gap between geometry and meaning. In its demonstrations, the MCP4IFC paper reports cases where generated geometry appeared structurally valid while the underlying IFC semantics were incomplete. The authors identify spatial reasoning, semantic consistency, and dependency handling as areas that need improvement.

Acurit Multi-Angled 16"x21" PXB Drawing Board with Parallel Motion Bar
  • PRECISE PARALLEL-LINE CONTROL: This drafting board's fitted straight-edge motion bar draws accurate horizontal lines, keeping layouts perfectly aligned. Convenient dials with a network of crossed wires and pulleys make every adjustment smooth and effortless during detailed work
  • ANGLE CONTROL FOR COMFORTABLE POSTURE: An adjustable frame offers 7 drawing angles up to 45° to suit seated or tabletop setups. Rubber feet and a durable handle assist with steady placement and easy transport between workspaces
  • SMOOTH, DURABLE 17MM WORK SURFACE: A laminated nonporous melamine board supports clean strokes and easy cleanup. Both sides resist scratches, dents, or damage, helping the surface maintain a consistent and reliable feel over time
  • BUILT-IN RULER FOR PRECISE MEASUREMENT: A transparent ruler with inch markings and an inking edge keeps spacing accurate and marks legible alongside the straightedge. The inking edge shields fresh marks from smudging as the bar travels
  • VERSATILE FOR ANY DRAFTING PROJECT: Designed for artists, architects, engineers, and designers, it suits drawing, sketching, drafting, and painting. A compact portable format supports work in shared or small spaces

In practice, this means visual review alone cannot establish that a model is dependable BIM. A wall may appear in the expected location but be represented incorrectly, lack needed properties, or fail to participate in the expected relationships. An opening, room, or storey can also be geometrically plausible without being adequately connected to the rest of the model. Those are reasons to inspect the IFC data and downstream behavior, not just the viewport.

Choose the IFC target before building the workflow

“IFC-compatible” does not guarantee that every application supports every IFC release or every model view. buildingSMART notes that software implementations may support a narrower portion of the standard. A workflow therefore needs a defined export target, not merely a file that ends in .ifc.

  • Set the receiving workflow. Identify the application and purpose for the export, such as coordination or another downstream BIM task.
  • Choose the supported schema and model view. Confirm what the receiving application can import and which subset of IFC it expects.
  • Test representative content. Check the object classes, properties, and relationships that matter for that workflow, not only whether the file opens.
  • Keep validation scoped. Record which schema or model view was checked and what the receiving application successfully imported and used.

buildingSMART provides an IFC Validation Service and describes validation against the standard. A standards check is valuable, but it does not by itself establish that a particular application’s import or project workflow will behave as intended; test the actual target workflow too.

What I would count as a successful agent

For an architectural agent, “it drew a building” is too weak a success criterion. I would evaluate whether it can create new geometry, edit an existing model, and query model information as distinct tasks; whether its operations are repeatable; and whether the exported data remains semantically useful after import.

I would also keep a record of the prompt, resulting objects, IFC version and model view, validation outcome, and receiving application behavior. That makes failures diagnosable: a bad result may come from ambiguous instructions, a faulty modeling operation, incomplete semantics, or a mismatch between the export and the receiving software.

There is no verified performance statistic for the particular agent described by this title, so a success rate, time saving, or accuracy figure would be misleading. The defensible conclusion is narrower: research prototypes show that natural-language-guided IFC creation, querying, and editing are feasible, while also documenting semantic and reasoning limitations that make validation essential.
