Colorlib’s September 25, 2026 roundup offers useful examples across picture books, editorial work, maps, lettering, natural history, medical illustration, animation, and more. Its extracted list identifies 21 artists by name, not 23, so this guide focuses on those verifiable examples rather than filling the gap with guesses. Portfolio designs and site details can change.
What these portfolio examples can teach you
The examples below are drawn from Colorlib’s editorial selection, not an independently tested ranking. The useful question is not which site is universally best, but which presentation choices help a particular audience assess an illustrator’s work.

- Show work promptly: A full-screen image, a focused grid, or a book-led landing page can all work if visitors encounter illustration without unnecessary detours.
- Give images context: Project titles, client names, and descriptions of use help a prospective buyer understand what an image demonstrates.
- Make relevant work findable: Grouping by client, market, book, or specialty can help an art director or publisher reach the right work quickly.
- Make the next step clear: Direct email, an enquiry page, or clearly explained agent representation reduces friction.
Illustration portfolios organized around a specialty or buyer
Jean Jullien: multiple audiences, distinct contact routes
Jullien’s presentation accommodates different kinds of work and buyers. Separate commercial-agent routes by territory and literary representation help direct enquiries, while galleries and a print shop serve other interests. The lesson is to distinguish contact paths when the work spans different markets.

Scott’s natural-history-inspired work is connected to recognizable commercial projects. Project thumbnails identify names and clients, and representation and print-shop information are accessible. For a portfolio aimed at commercial buyers, that pairing of image and assignment context can make relevant experience easier to assess.

Sparks makes maps the defining specialty while separating commercial, personal, and map work. This structure shows how a specialist can foreground the service they want to be hired for without hiding other work.

Gralapp separates medical and med-legal work around buyer needs. The roundup also notes a Certified Medical Illustrator credential and a process section. This is a useful model for a portfolio where expertise, process, and the intended professional context matter alongside the finished image.

Harper’s natural-history illustrations are organized by commissioning markets and uses, including books, charts, information boards, and magazines. Organizing by application can help clients quickly find work that resembles their own brief.

Susann Hoffmann: show the breadth of a market-facing practice

Lisa Maltby: use project titles and credibility cues
Maltby combines a positioning line with titled projects spanning packaging, editorial, maps, and murals. Testimonials and enquiry links add context for potential clients. A project grid is more informative when titles and supporting details explain what the images were made to do.

The roundup notes client credits, a direct commission email, and separate links for brushes and prints. This is a reminder that visual consistency and practical enquiry information can coexist.
Portfolios led by books, comics, and publishing
Chris Haughton: let the books lead the navigation
Haughton puts picture books at the center of both the work and navigation, with book titles serving as menu items. Related sections cover rugs, films, awards, resources for teachers and parents, a newsletter, and a shop. This is a book-led approach that also serves readers and fans.
Tom Gauld: signal new work and separate formats
Gauld’s news-led homepage signals recent activity, while comics, children’s books, and illustration have distinct sections. A shop, original drawings, mailing list, and contact details serve additional needs. Separating formats helps a visitor looking for one kind of work avoid sorting through another.
Jillian Tamaki: let visitors read the comics
Tamaki separates comics, editorial work, and picture books. A short-comics section lets visitors read work directly, while FAQ and agent routing help handle enquiries. For narrative work, showing the work in its intended form may communicate more than a gallery of isolated images.
Sydney Smith: a minimal structure for picture books
Smith’s simple Books and About structure lets picture-book covers carry the presentation. The roundup also notes award and agent information. A restrained menu can suit a focused practice when the work itself is the clearest guide.

Distinctive presentation styles and mixed practices
Christoph Niemann: one image as the entry point
Niemann’s homepage uses a single full-bleed lead image, with work, news, exhibitions, books, and shop behind a menu. This approach makes one image the first impression; it depends on the selected image doing enough work to invite visitors further in.
Marylou Faure: put client and enquiry information up front
Faure’s homepage puts client names, an enquiry email, and a shop in immediate view. Client-led project titles help brand visitors find comparable work. This is a practical arrangement when a visitor may arrive with a specific commercial brief.
Sara Andreasson: a one-page route through the work
Andreasson’s one-page presentation combines a short bio, email, client categories, and work without requiring visitors to learn a menu. A compact layout can work when it keeps the essentials clear and scannable.
Loish: separate commissioned work from personal work
Loish (Lois van Baarle) distinguishes client work, original art, rough work, and animation. Tutorials, brushes, artbooks, Patreon, and shop links also serve a fan community. The separation helps professional visitors assess commissions while giving other audiences their own paths.

Owen Gildersleeve: foreground the making method
Gildersleeve’s full-screen presentation foregrounds cut-paper craft, and a short menu separates commissions, art, shop, and About. When an illustration practice has a distinctive material or method, showing it immediately can communicate what makes the work recognizable.
Ping Zhu: use client names as navigation
Zhu uses client names to form navigation, allowing art directors to move directly to a relevant section. Editorial, books, and personal work are also distinct. This is a buyer-oriented structure when client relationships are useful evidence of fit.
Beatrice Blue: separate representation by discipline
Blue separates picture-book and animation representation contacts. A painterly grid leads the page, alongside community projects and store links. When an artist works across disciplines with different representatives, explicit routes can reduce misdirected enquiries.
Malika Favre: balance portfolio and shop
Favre combines a shop and portfolio, organizes work by theme, and gives commissions a distinct route. The roundup cautions that a shop-first structure is more suited to an established name than to a newer illustrator. For an early-career artist, the priority is usually making commissioned work and contact information easy to find.

Choose work for the audience you want
Adobe’s portfolio guidance says, “Choose pieces that reflect your unique style and what you want to say.” It also advises selecting work that reflects your core identity, curating the strongest pieces rather than including everything, and tailoring breadth or depth to the purpose and audience. Adobe does not prescribe a fixed number of pieces; the right selection depends on experience, purpose, skills, and how much time viewers are likely to spend. Adobe’s digital art portfolio guidance provides the underlying selection principles.

Caption projects with the information a buyer needs
For each selected project, consider including the client or publication, the type of assignment, and where or how the illustration was used. Use only details you can substantiate and have permission to share. A caption should clarify the work’s context, not compete with the image.
Choose navigation that reflects how clients search
A single page can work for a compact practice; distinct sections may be more useful when you serve multiple markets or have substantial bodies of work. Consider categories such as editorial, books, packaging, maps, or medical illustration only when they help a visitor locate relevant examples. Adobe’s professional guidance similarly recommends choosing a focus, showing the kind of work you want to be hired for, keeping artwork accessible and fast to load, and demonstrating professional capability. Adobe’s illustrator portfolio guidance covers these points.
Make contact and availability unambiguous
Use a working email or enquiry form and explain agent representation where it affects who should be contacted. If availability changes, update the notice rather than leaving an old status in place. The Colorlib roundup reports that its author found broken or stale contact details while checking sites, an avoidable problem for a portfolio used to win work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSelect a format you can maintain
The roundup’s September 2026 snapshot reports examples using WordPress, Format, Squarespace, Shopify, Cargo, Wix, and Adobe Portfolio; implementations can change. Adobe describes portfolio options including custom websites, templates, PDFs, physical portfolios, and video or multimedia presentations. A custom site allows broad design freedom but can require development time and ongoing domain costs; templates are often easier to assemble but can be more restrictive. Adobe’s Portfolio FAQ, last updated June 17, 2025, describes responsive layouts, custom domains, galleries, custom pages, and project synchronization with Behance, and says Portfolio is included with Creative Cloud, Single App, and Photography plans. Check Adobe’s Portfolio FAQ for current plan and feature details before choosing it.
How to read this list
Colorlib published its roundup on September 25, 2026, and described testing more than 150 web addresses and checking live sites’ About and contact pages. Its selected-site descriptions and availability reflect that publisher’s review date; portfolio content, contact routes, and site technology may since have changed. The extracted article text identifies entries 1–21 and then labels Essi Kimpimäki as number 23, without exposing a distinct number 22 entry. Accordingly, this article names 21 verifiable artists rather than claiming to reproduce all 23 examples.
