IKEA Smart Home Devices: Choose Between Hub and Direct Pairing

Some IKEA devices can pair without a hub, while DIRIGERA adds app-based features and Matter roles. Learn what to verify before choosing your setup.

I can’t verify which five IKEA smart-home devices an author used for eight months, so I won’t present a personal-use ranking as fact. What IKEA’s current materials do establish is how to choose between pairing some devices directly and using the DIRIGERA hub for app control, routines, voice features, and Matter connectivity.

Do you need the IKEA DIRIGERA hub?

No—not for every IKEA smart product. IKEA UK support says some bulbs, remotes, and motion sensors can pair directly without DIRIGERA. That can suit a simple setup where you want basic device-to-device control. IKEA UK’s pairing guidance describes which products can be used hub-free; check the instructions for the exact model and market you are buying.

The hub becomes useful when you want IKEA’s app-based control and features such as routines, multi-room setups, or voice control. IKEA describes DIRIGERA as both a Matter bridge for IKEA products and a controller for supported Matter devices from other brands. A compatible hub is required to add Matter-enabled products to a setup, according to IKEA’s 2025 announcement. These roles are related but distinct: bridging IKEA products is not the same as guaranteeing that every Matter product or feature works in every app.

What IKEA’s Matter plans mean for buyers

In its announcement dated 9 July 2025, Inter IKEA said it planned to introduce over 20 Matter-based smart products in January. The announcement does not specify a year for that January schedule, nor does it establish that every announced item launched in every market. Treat it as a statement of planned range expansion, not a current list of what is available where. Inter IKEA’s announcement describes Matter as the basis for broader cross-brand compatibility.

#1 Best Overall

  • Powered by SmartThings: Connect, monitor, and automate your home through the SmartThings app. Build a reliable, unified smart home using Samsung's proven ecosystem
  • Matter + Zigbee Smart Home Hub: Supports the newest Matter standard plus Zigbee for lighting, sensors, plugs, switches, thermostats, and more - thousands of compatible devices. PLEASE NOTE: Z-Wave not supported
  • Easy Setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Get started in minutes using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection for apartments, houses, and expanding smart home systems - Z-Wave not supported
  • Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
  • Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings

Matter can make devices from different brands work within compatible smart-home systems, but the standard alone does not guarantee that a particular device, feature, app, or regional version will work in your setup. Confirm support for the exact model and functions you plan to use. IKEA’s announcement characterizes DIRIGERA as a controller for supported Matter devices and a bridge for IKEA products; it is not a model-by-model compatibility chart.

IKEA has used Zigbee since 2012, according to a 2024 company announcement outlining its bridge plans. That history helps explain why a bridge matters for IKEA products, but it does not establish identical current support for every older device. IKEA’s 11 September 2024 announcement provides that background.

Which device types are worth considering?

IKEA’s US catalog currently shows several kinds of smart-home hardware. These are examples of product categories, not an endorsement or a list of five devices proven through eight months of use. Names and availability can vary by country and change over time. IKEA’s US smart-home catalog includes:

  • Smart bulbs: Consider them if your goal is app-based or automated lighting; verify whether the exact bulb supports the control method you want.
  • Smart plug: A way to add smart switching to a compatible plugged-in device. Check the product’s limits and whether it meets your intended use.
  • Temperature and humidity sensor: Useful when you want environmental readings or automations based on them; confirm which app or hub is needed for those functions.
  • Remote: A physical control option that can make sense when you do not want every interaction to depend on a phone.
  • DIRIGERA hub: The option to investigate when you want hub-based app control, routines, supported voice features, or a Matter setup.

For US shoppers, IKEA’s current catalog uses the names KAJPLATS for bulbs, GRILLPLATS for a smart plug, TIMMERFLOTTE for a temperature/humidity sensor, and BILRESA for a remote. The DIRIGERA US listing describes its app, network, Matter, and voice-assistant roles. See IKEA’s US DIRIGERA product listing for current listing details; these names and listings should not be assumed to apply in other regions.

How to decide what to buy

  1. Start with the job. Decide whether you need lighting, switching, sensing, or a physical control before choosing a device.
  2. Choose the control setup. If direct pairing provides the functions you need, you may not need a hub. If you want app-based routines, multi-room control, voice features, or supported Matter devices, check whether DIRIGERA is required for the specific products and features.
  3. Verify exact compatibility. Check the product’s regional listing and setup instructions against your chosen app, voice assistant, and any Matter controller. Do not assume that Matter support means every feature is shared across platforms.
  4. Check installation and ongoing needs. Review power or battery requirements, placement, and the product’s instructions before purchase. For sensors and remotes, consider whether you will need to replace or recharge batteries.
  5. Confirm local availability and price. The cited US catalog is a snapshot, not a promise of current stock or a guide to prices in other countries.

What IKEA says about offline use and software support

IKEA’s US smart-home policy says basic functions, such as switching lights on and off, are designed to work without an internet connection or remote server. The policy also says DIRIGERA and TRÅDFRI gateways receive software support for three years after purchase. These statements apply to the policy’s stated scope; they should not be read as a guarantee that app access, remote control, integrations, or every automation will work offline. Check IKEA US smart-home support for the current wording.

What cannot be established about a five-device ranking

IKEA’s catalog and support pages can explain product types, setup options, and the company’s compatibility plans. They cannot establish that a particular writer owned five products, used them for eight months, or would buy them again. Without those firsthand details, a list framed as a personal verdict would imply experience that the available evidence does not support.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
