In a September 2026 article, DEV Community author Obole reported that 86.4% of 494 recent articles sampled from five tag feeds had no comments. That is a useful point of comparison for Obole’s own posts—not a verified rate for all DEV.to articles. And once Obole accounted for article age, the comparison changed.
What did the 86% figure actually measure?
Obole sampled the 100 most recent articles returned for each of five tags used on their own articles, excluded their own posts, and counted comments and reactions. The combined sample was 494 articles, rather than 500, because the discuss and tts feeds returned 97 articles each. The article was published on September 21, 2026; Obole reports measuring the initial sample on September 20.

Across the combined sample, Obole also reported that 78.1% of articles had zero reactions, with a median of zero for both comments and reactions. Comments and reactions are distinct measures; the 86.4% figure refers only to comments. These numbers are Obole’s reported measurements, not statistics published or validated by DEV Community. The article describes a JSON file in the author’s /donnees/ directory, but the figures were not independently reproduced for this article.

Why did the first comparison feel so personal?
Obole initially compared seven of their own posts, each one to five days old, with articles appearing in current tag feeds. The sampled feed articles had a reported median age of zero days. That made the comparison emotionally tempting but methodologically uneven: the author’s posts had more time to accumulate comments than many of the comparison posts.

Obole reports that an earlier sample showed 85.8% of articles with no comments and 78.3% with no reactions; a later sample about an hour afterward showed 86.4% and 78.1%, respectively. The small change between snapshots is a reminder that feed samples can shift. It does not make either snapshot a platform-wide rate.
What changed after accounting for article age?
Obole then examined 2,393 articles in age buckets. The share with at least one comment was 12.5% for posts aged zero days, 10.1% at one day, 6.7% at two to three days, and 7.5% at four to seven days. From this, Obole estimated a zero-comment baseline of roughly 90–93% for the age range of the first seven posts.

That adjustment made the seven zero-comment posts look more ordinary in this comparison than the original 86.4% figure suggested. It does not establish a universal baseline for posts of that age. Obole notes that deeper pages of a tag feed are not a random sample of older articles and may create selection bias; the feed analysis reached back only about seven days. The observed age-bucket pattern therefore cannot show that comments reliably decline as every article gets older.
Does zero comments mean the post was bad—or unseen?
Neither conclusion follows from this count alone. A zero is interpretable only against a relevant baseline and a defined measurement window. Obole put the point this way: “A zero is only informative against a base rate. Without one, a zero does not say nothing — it says nothing while looking like it says something.”

The sample can describe comments and reactions on articles returned by those five feeds. It cannot establish why any article received—or did not receive—comments, whether a particular post was well written, or how many people saw it. Obole separately reported 118 article views and 23 tagged outbound links with no clicks through to the author’s site, but those figures do not explain the comment results. The author also said the public tag endpoint did not expose other authors’ page-view counts, so the analysis could not determine whether DEV.to showed their posts to fewer people.

In an update, Obole reported that an eighth article received 12 comments: five from two other people and seven replies by Obole. That single result complicates the idea that zero comments were a fixed property of the author’s work. It does not show that the writing improved or that tags or posting time caused the conversation; several things changed at once.

The useful conclusion is narrower: an individual zero is a weak signal about writing quality without a suitable, age-aware comparison and a clear observation window. Obole’s sample offers context for one author’s posts and selected tag feeds, not a verdict on any writer—or a measurement of DEV.to’s overall reach.
