Which Bitbucket download method should you use?

How do you download one tracked file in a browser?
- Open the Bitbucket Cloud repository and select Source.
- Navigate to and open the file you need.
- Select the ellipsis menu, then choose Open Raw. Atlassian says opening Raw automatically downloads the file. Atlassian’s single-file download instructions
- If the browser displays the code or text instead, use its Save As command to save a local copy.
This method is convenient when you need one tracked file and can access the repository in the web interface.

How do you download one tracked file with cURL?
For a repeatable or scripted download, Atlassian documents a request to the Bitbucket Cloud source endpoint. Replace each angle-bracketed value with your account email, API token, workspace ID, repository slug, branch name, and file path:

The documented API token scope is read:repository:bitbucket. Keep credentials out of public scripts and repositories. See Atlassian’s single-file download instructions for the endpoint guidance.

How do you download a branch as a ZIP archive?
To get a snapshot rather than a Git working copy, use Bitbucket Cloud’s branch archive URL pattern:
https://bitbucket.org/<workspace-id>/<repository-slug>/get/<branch>.<zip|gz|bz2>Choose the branch and archive format in the URL. Atlassian also describes obtaining a ZIP through the repository’s Downloads UI and provides this cURL example for a branch ZIP:

Files shown under a repository’s Downloads section were manually uploaded; they are separate from files tracked under Source. The documented REST endpoint pattern is:

Because the article does not establish that older credential pattern as a current requirement, verify the token type and required scopes for your account and endpoint before scripting this request. When should you clone instead of downloading an archive?
Clone the repository if you need its Git history, branches, or the ability to pull and fetch later. In the repository, select Clone and copy the HTTPS or SSH command for a Git client. Atlassian also documents Sourcetree and VS Code as clone clients. HTTPS users may need Git Credential Manager; SSH users need a configured SSH key. Atlassian’s repository cloning instructions

An archive is a source snapshot, not a local Git repository. Choose it when you want files without ongoing Git operations; choose clone when you need a working repository.
Does a Bitbucket archive include Git LFS files?
No. Bitbucket Cloud repository archives contain Git LFS pointer files, not the actual LFS file contents. Atlassian states: “Currently, Git LFS files are not included when you download an archive of a repository, tag or branch.” Atlassian’s Git LFS limitations

If you need an archive containing LFS content, Atlassian’s workaround is to clone the repository and create the archive locally. For the checked-out current head, clone and archive that local repository. If the archive must include LFS objects referenced across history, fetch all LFS objects before creating it.
What are Bitbucket Cloud’s download request limits?
Atlassian’s current Bitbucket Cloud API limits documentation lists these authenticated limits: 5,000 raw-file requests per hour and 1,500 repository archive requests per hour. It also lists 60 anonymous API requests per hour. These are request limits, not download-speed guarantees; the figures are volatile, so check Atlassian’s API request limits page before planning bulk downloads.
