What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A fast local tool call does not show whether an AI agent can handle the same call over a real network. To test that, capture each call’s timing and outcome, then compare a laptop trace with one from a separate host and exercise timeouts, retries, and incomplete responses. The result is evidence that the agent had to wait and faced failures—not proof that it completed the task correctly.
What an instant round trip does—and does not—prove
When a tool runs as an in-process function call, it may return almost immediately. That can hide the waits and failure modes of a remote call: network delay, a deadline expiring, a retry, or a response body that stops partway through. A green local run can therefore exercise a different path from a deployed agent.

Emery Chen makes the point bluntly in the September 23, 2026, DEV Community article “If the Round Trip Was Instant, You Cheated”: “If your eval never blocked on I/O, you do not have an eval. You only have a unit test of prompt text.” That is the author’s framing, not a formal testing standard. The practical question is narrower: did the agent actually wait on tool I/O, and did it handle the outcomes you care about?
Capture enough evidence to diagnose every tool call
Record a structured event for every call, including failed attempts. At minimum, include:
#1 Best Overall

- AI & Linux Capabilities: Unlocks AI-powered vision and sound solutions; runs Linux Debian OS for coding in Python and supports the Arduino ecosystem with libraries and Sketches; quick start with Arduino App Lab.
- Advanced Features: Equipped with 4 GB LPDDR4 RAM, 32 GB eMMC built-in storage, ideal for single-board computer (SBC) mode, running multiple simultaneous high-level processes, more complex AI or ML models, extensive logs. Dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (2.4/5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.1, and high-speed headers for vision, audio, and display peripherals.
- Seamless Expansion & Connectivity: Features the classic UNO form factor for shields compatibility, an 8x13 LED matrix, and a Qwiic connector for easy expansion with Modulino nodes; power and connect via the USB-C connector.
- Intended Use & Development: The perfect platform for prototyping robotics or IoT projects, empowering innovators with a unified development experience to mix Arduino Sketches, Python scripts, and containerized AI models in a single interface.
- Identity: tool name and attempt number.
- Timing: monotonic start and end times, plus the timeout budget. A monotonic clock measures elapsed time without relying on wall-clock adjustments.
- Outcome: whether the call was aborted or retried, and the HTTP status or transport error when applicable.
- Response completeness: bytes received before parsing, so a truncated body is distinguishable from a complete response.
These fields let you reconstruct how long the call took, whether the deadline applied, and what the agent received before it chose its next action. If the event records only a final success or failure, it may conceal whether a retry occurred or whether the response was incomplete.
Compare a local trace with a separate-host trace
Collect at least one trace from the developer’s laptop process and one from a host that was not manually bootstrapped as that laptop. The second trace should exercise the remote execution path you want to evaluate, rather than merely repeat the same in-process call.

Compare the runs along separate axes instead of treating “slow” as a single result:

- Wait evidence: elapsed time and wait ranges; interpret thresholds in the context of the environment.
- Failure handling: deadline aborts, fallback decisions, retry behavior, and partial-body parsing.
- Mutation safety: whether a retried operation reuses an idempotency key.
- Trace completeness: whether attempts, bytes, outcomes, and timestamps are available for diagnosis or replay.
- Agent behavior: whether tool choices change when calls wait or fail.
Chen’s example harness uses a 20 ms cutoff to flag a successful call as implausibly local. It is an illustrative heuristic, not a universal threshold or production policy. The article also shows an 8.0-second timeout budget and a 0.2-second comparison value in sample code; neither is a recommended standard or a measured benchmark. Tune thresholds using the traces from your own environment. Do not combine unlike waits in one assertion: a short cutoff aimed at detecting in-process calls tests something different from a multisecond DNS delay.

Exercise three distinct failure cases
Deadline miss: stop waiting and choose a fallback
Configure a tool call with a bounded timeout and make sure the agent responds when the budget expires. The expected behavior is an abort followed by an appropriate fallback, rather than hanging indefinitely. Record the timeout budget and abort flag so you can tell whether the deadline was enforced.
Retry storm: protect mutations from duplicate effects
A failed first call followed by a second POST can repeat a side effect. For a mutating operation, the retry should reuse an idempotency key so the service can recognize it as the same operation rather than performing it twice. Treat retry behavior and mutation safety as linked but distinct checks: a retry may be warranted, while an unprotected repeated mutation may not be safe.

Partial body: reject truncated data
A connection can fail after bytes have arrived but before the response is complete. Verify that the parser does not accept a truncated object as a successful result. Recording bytes received before parsing, along with the transport outcome, helps distinguish an incomplete response from a valid one.
Keep the evaluation claim within its limits
This method checks whether the agent was forced to wait and whether it encountered selected failure conditions. It does not establish task correctness, rank models, or show that every agent or transport will exhibit these failures. Chen summarizes the scope as: “This harness does not prove task correctness. It only proves the agent was forced to wait.”
The approach may add little value when the agent has no tools and only produces text, when tests already inject delays, or when evaluation already runs in an isolated remote job with real deadlines. It may also be unsuitable when policy forbids sending traces or prompts off the laptop. Choose the test environment and retained trace fields accordingly.
