Identity Dark Matter Is a Containment Challenge

Identity dark matter describes active accounts and authentication paths inside applications that central IAM may not govern. Here’s how to frame discovery as a containment challenge.

Identity dark matter is a useful operational label for accounts and authentication paths that work inside applications but fall outside an organization’s central identity and access management (IAM) controls. Containing it means more than finding overlooked accounts: teams need to identify where they operate, establish who owns them, assess their access, and decide whether they should remain active.

What identity dark matter means

Orchid Security defines identity dark matter as human or non-human identities that are active and functional in an organization’s applications and systems but unknown to, or ungoverned by, its IAM infrastructure. The phrase is Orchid’s vendor-coined label, not a formal IAM standard or a universally measured technical category. Orchid’s August 23, 2026 guide provides the company’s definition.

The practical gap is between what an organization’s central IAM records say it controls and what applications actually permit. An account can remain usable inside an application even when it is missing from the central inventory or does not follow centrally managed lifecycle and access policies.

What can fall outside the central inventory

Orchid’s solution brief groups the problem into five areas. This is a vendor taxonomy, not an official classification:

  • Legacy and shadow applications: applications that may not be represented in the current IAM program or application inventory.
  • Orphaned and local accounts: accounts that exist within an application and may lack a clear owner or central governance.
  • Hidden authentication paths: alternate or emergency logins that can provide a way into an application outside its expected identity flow.
  • Identity control drift: differences between identity-related behavior in application code and the policies enforced through IAM.
  • User activity: what users actually do, which a permission list alone cannot establish. Permissions describe what is possible, not necessarily what happened.

That scope is broader than shadow IT. It includes non-human identities as well as people, and it includes the paths and controls that determine how an identity authenticates—not just whether its name appears in a directory.

Why discovery is only the first containment step

A central inventory can be accurate about the identities it knows while still missing accounts created and managed locally within applications. Orchid proposes examining applications directly to uncover accounts, identity flows, and controls that conventional records may not expose. That is the vendor’s proposed approach; the available evidence does not establish that any single technique finds every hidden identity or outperforms alternatives such as network discovery or configuration review.

For a security team, containment is therefore a governance problem as well as a visibility problem. Finding an account does not reveal whether it is still needed, who is responsible for it, or whether its privileges and authentication method are appropriate. A practical workflow is:

  1. Map the applications and authentication paths. Start with the applications in scope, then identify the login routes they support, including alternate or emergency access paths.
  2. Identify local and non-human identities. Look for accounts that function within the application but are absent from or ungoverned by central IAM records.
  3. Establish purpose and ownership. Determine what each identity supports and which person or team is accountable for it. An account without a known owner is difficult to review or retire safely.
  4. Assess access and lifecycle controls. Review what the identity can access, how it authenticates, and whether creation, changes, review, and removal are governed.
  5. Record remediation or an exception. Track the action taken, or document why an account remains active and who accepted that decision.

This is an operational framing for moving from discovery to governance, not a checklist validated by Orchid’s published figures. Its purpose is to make each finding lead to an accountable decision rather than leave a list of unreviewed accounts.

What Orchid’s 2026 figures do—and do not—show

In a May 19, 2026 announcement about its Identity Gap: 2026 Snapshot, Orchid Security reported that the enterprise environments covered by the report had 57% invisible identity and 43% visible identity. The announcement also said 67% of non-human accounts were created directly within applications and were unseen and unmanaged by IAM programs. These are Orchid’s report figures, not independently established rates for all organizations. The announcement does not provide enough methodology to generalize the percentages market-wide. Read Orchid’s announcement.

The numbers illustrate the distinction the term is meant to capture: accounts created or operating in applications may not be represented in the central controls intended to govern identity. They should not be treated as a forecast for a particular organization. Each team needs to establish its own application coverage, identity population, and governance gaps.

How to use the term without overstating it

“Identity dark matter” is most useful as a prompt to look for identities and authentication behavior beyond the systems already inventoried. It should not be mistaken for a standard-defined measurement, a single product category, or proof that a specific organization has a particular percentage of unmanaged accounts. Orchid’s guide and solution brief establish the company’s definition and taxonomy; they do not independently validate the prevalence of the issue across enterprises.

For an organization, the meaningful outcome is not a headline percentage. It is knowing which identities and authentication paths exist in the applications it relies on, who owns them, what they can do, and whether their continued access is justified.
