For Stripe, reusing an idempotency key with a different amount is not a valid retry: the changed parameters do not match the original request, so Stripe documents that it returns an idempotency error. The key is meant to retry the same logical operation, not submit a modified one. Other payment APIs may handle mismatches differently, so check the specific provider and endpoint.
What an idempotency key does
An idempotency key lets an API recognize retries of the same request. If a client times out or loses the response, it can resend the unchanged logical request with the same key rather than risk creating a duplicate operation. The key does not authorize changing the original request while treating it as a retry.

Providers differ in how they validate, store, and replay requests. A “same response” is not a universal guarantee: it depends on the provider’s rules and whether the first request reached the point where its result is recorded.

Stripe compares the parameters of a subsequent request with those of the original request associated with the key. Reusing the key with a changed amount creates a parameter mismatch, and Stripe documents an idempotency error for a request that does not match the first request’s endpoint and parameters. See Stripe’s idempotent requests documentation and its error code reference.

For matching requests, Stripe saves and returns the first status code and response body after endpoint execution begins. This means the replay can be the original result, including an error; it does not mean the operation is guaranteed to have succeeded. Validation failures before execution and certain concurrent conflicts are not saved as idempotent results.
How the documented behavior differs by provider
The following comparison is limited to the cited API documentation; it should not be read as a rule for every endpoint offered by each provider.

| Provider | Retry and mismatch behavior | Scope and retention limits |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe | Replays the first status and body for a recorded request. A later request with different parameters errors. | Keys may be pruned once they are at least 24 hours old. Results are saved only after endpoint execution begins; pre-execution validation failures and certain concurrent conflicts are not saved. Stripe documentation; Stripe error reference. |
| Adyen | If a request was already processed, retrying with the same key returns the first response without duplicating the action. The cited guidance does not establish a universal changed-amount response for all cases. | Applies to POST requests; keys are scoped to the company account and valid for 7 to 14 days. Concurrent calls can return a transient error or an in-progress/processed conflict, for which the documented error handling applies. Adyen API idempotency documentation. |
| PayPal | For supported REST calls, reusing the same PayPal-Request-Id returns the original result while the ID is stored. The cited documentation does not establish a universal changed-amount response for every endpoint. | The ID is stored for up to 45 days, and support must be checked for the specific API call. PayPal idempotency documentation; PayPal API request guidance. |
What to do when the amount changes
- For a retry after an uncertain outcome, resend the same logical request with the original key and unchanged parameters, subject to that provider’s endpoint rules.
- For a genuinely new payment or a changed amount, create a new logical request and use a fresh idempotency key. Do not reuse the old key to try to turn the original operation into a different one.
- If you do not know whether the first request completed, consult the provider’s response and error handling for that endpoint before deciding whether to retry. Concurrent requests and failures before a result is recorded may be treated differently from a completed request.
- Check retention and endpoint support, because an old key may no longer identify the original request, and not every API call necessarily supports idempotency in the same way.
Why a replay may not look like success
Idempotency prevents duplicate execution under the provider’s documented conditions; it does not promise a successful payment. A replay can return the first request’s stored failure. Nor should a client assume every failed or simultaneous attempt was stored: Stripe distinguishes results saved after execution starts from validation failures and certain concurrent conflicts, while Adyen documents special handling for concurrent requests.
