iCloud Drive vs. OneDrive for iPhone: Which Should You Use?

iCloud Drive is the natural choice for Apple-first iPhone users; OneDrive suits Microsoft workflows and has a documented offline-file workflow. Compare how each uses storage before choosing.

Choose iCloud Drive if you mainly use Apple devices and want cloud files built into the iPhone’s Files app. Choose OneDrive if Microsoft accounts and documents are central to your work, or if its iPhone app’s offline-file and camera-roll upload features fit your needs. Neither is the universal winner: compare the devices and people you share with, what already uses your cloud storage, and the current plan terms in your region.

How do they work on an iPhone?

iCloud Drive lives in Files

iCloud Drive is part of Apple’s Files app. To turn it on, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud, then enable Drive under the apps using iCloud (Apple’s current wording may show Sync this iPhone). Files stored there can appear alongside items stored locally or with other connected services in Files. Apple documents access to the same files on devices signed in to the same Apple Account, including Mac Finder, iCloud for Windows, and iCloud.com. Adding, renaming, or deleting a file is reflected across those devices. Apple’s iCloud Drive setup and access guide.

OneDrive uses Microsoft’s app

OneDrive is accessed through Microsoft’s iOS app, where you can upload files, create folders, share items, and manage camera uploads. This gives Microsoft users a direct route to their OneDrive files, but it is a separate app experience rather than a built-in iPhone Files location. Microsoft’s OneDrive iOS app guide.

How much storage do you get, and what uses it?

Both services offer 5 GB of free storage, but the allowance is not reserved just for files in the drive app. What else draws from it can make a bigger difference than the headline number.

Microsoft personal cloud storage 5 GB, according to Microsoft’s FAQ reviewed October 9, 2026 OneDrive files and photos, Outlook.com attachments, and Microsoft apps Microsoft’s storage FAQ describes 1 TB per account allocation for Microsoft 365 Personal and Family. Its subscription page says new Family and Premium subscribers receive 2 TB pooled storage starting October 7, 2026, with a separate transition date for existing subscribers. Check the current plan details for your account. Microsoft OneDrive plan comparison and Microsoft storage FAQ

These are different storage pools with different jobs. Apple’s 5 GB can fill from an iPhone backup or photo library even if Drive contains little. Microsoft’s personal allowance can be consumed by mail attachments or Microsoft apps as well as OneDrive. If an Apple account runs out of space, backups and new iCloud Photos uploads stop, and Drive or other iCloud apps may stop staying current across devices. Check your account’s storage breakdown before buying extra capacity.

What happens to iPhone photos?

iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive are not the same feature

iCloud Photos is part of Apple’s broader iCloud service and uses the same storage pool as iCloud Drive and backups. It is the Apple-native option for keeping a photo library available across devices; Drive is for files and folders. Treating them as separate storage allowances can lead to an unexpected full account.

OneDrive Camera Upload copies the camera roll

OneDrive’s iOS Camera Upload sends camera-roll items to OneDrive. Microsoft says this is an upload, not two-way photo-library synchronization: deleting or changing a photo in one place does not make OneDrive a mirrored Apple Photos library. Microsoft also documents that OneDrive cannot upload photos optimized for iCloud. Upload progress can be affected by iOS background behavior, battery state, network choice, and whether the app has been force-closed, so do not assume every item will upload immediately. Microsoft’s Camera Upload guidance.

Neither cloud drive should be mistaken for a complete substitute for an iPhone device backup. iCloud storage can hold an iPhone backup; OneDrive Camera Upload copies camera-roll items, not the device’s full settings and app data.

Which works better offline?

Microsoft documents an explicit offline workflow in its iOS app: mark individual files as available offline, then access them without a connection. Microsoft says edits to supported Office files made offline sync after the device reconnects. Taking whole folders offline requires Premium OneDrive with a Microsoft 365 subscription. Microsoft’s offline access instructions.

That documented workflow is useful for travel, unreliable connections, or files you know you will need. It is not enough evidence to conclude that iCloud Drive has no comparable offline access; the available documentation does not establish a full one-to-one comparison of offline behavior on iPhone. If offline access is a deciding factor, test the specific files and app workflow you rely on before traveling.

How do sharing and cross-device access compare?

Both services let you share files and access them across devices. Apple supports sharing iCloud Drive files and folders by link, with controls for whether recipients can view or edit. Recently deleted Drive files can be recovered within 30 days unless permanently removed from Recently Deleted. Apple’s iCloud Drive sharing and deletion guide.

OneDrive is a natural fit when the people you work with already use Microsoft accounts or documents, while iCloud Drive is convenient when your work and devices are centered on Apple. In a mixed-device group, decide based on the recipients’ ability to open the files, whether they need edit access, and which account they will use—not just the app you prefer.

Which should you choose?

Choose iCloud Drive if…

  • Your everyday devices are an iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and you want files inside Files and Finder.
  • Your existing iCloud storage already supports backups, Photos, and Apple apps, so keeping files in the same account is convenient.
  • You share mainly with people who can use Apple’s link-based view or edit access.

Choose OneDrive if…

  • You already use Microsoft accounts, apps, or documents and want your files in that ecosystem.
  • You need the documented option to pin individual files offline in the OneDrive iOS app.
  • You want a camera-roll upload destination separate from Apple Photos and understand its one-way upload behavior and iCloud-optimized-photo limitation.

Compare both before committing if…

  • Your collaborators use a mix of Apple and Microsoft services; check whether links work for them and whether view or edit access is required.
  • You are close to a storage limit; check what is consuming each pool rather than comparing drive folders alone.
  • You are choosing a subscription; compare the current regional price, included capacity, and whether storage is individual or pooled. Microsoft’s described Family and Premium storage change has different timing for new and existing subscribers.
