This is a transfer involving a group of IBM customers—not a sale of IBM or a move affecting every organization using VMware on IBM Cloud.
Which IBM VMware customers are being transferred?
CRN reports that the group spans the Americas, the UK, the EU and APAC, and includes mid-to-large enterprises as well as Fortune 100 customers. 11:11 Systems CEO Brett Diamond described it as “hundreds of customers”; that is an approximate figure, not a disclosed count.

The report says most of the customers run VMware platforms dedicated to individual customers. A smaller subset uses a VMware-enabled stack powered by VMware Cloud Director. It does not identify individual accounts or explain why a particular customer is included.
What does 11:11 Systems plan to do?
11:11 says it intends to migrate the customers to its VMware Cloud Foundation platform. CEO Brett Diamond told CRN he expects most customers to want to move soon. That is his expectation, not evidence that every customer has agreed, that migrations have begun or that a binding schedule exists for any account.

11:11 CTO Justin Giardina said the larger share of customers expected to move to VCF is already on a VMware-enabled platform, though IBM had dedicated those platforms to individual customers. The transaction’s financial terms were not disclosed. CRN does not report a verified contract value, completion date or customer-specific deadline.
Why is IBM transferring these customer relationships?
The public report describes the transfer and 11:11’s planned migration path, but does not establish a reason for moving each customer or say that IBM’s licensing changes caused the transaction.
IBM’s policy notice provides relevant context. Effective 31 October 2025, new VMware Solutions deployments were no longer available to new IBM customers. IBM also said it could no longer sell VMware licenses to customers that did not have at least one active VMware workload running on IBM Cloud before that date. Qualifying existing customers can continue using and expanding active workloads, subject to restrictions. IBM explicitly distinguishes this End of Marketing notice from End of Support: it does not announce that support for all existing customers is ending. Read IBM’s policy notice.
A separate IBM licensing FAQ describes subscription-key and usage-meter requirements for certain client-managed IBM Cloud VMware deployments; VCF as a Service has different requirements. IBM says that licensing and metering update does not require workload migration. It should not be treated as proof of the reason for this customer transfer. See IBM’s licensing FAQ.

Do IBM Cloud VMware customers have to migrate?
The reported transfer does not establish a migration requirement for every IBM Cloud VMware customer. IBM’s published policy says qualifying existing customers can continue using and expanding active workloads subject to restrictions, while 11:11’s stated VCF migration plan concerns the customer group being transferred. Neither the CRN report nor the cited IBM notices set out the obligations, options or deadlines for a specific account.
Customers affected by a provider or contract change should rely on the notice and terms addressed to their account. Ask the account team to confirm who will provide service and support, whether a move is required or optional, what the destination environment is, and the applicable timeline and licensing arrangements. Do not infer an account-specific deadline from the general report.

How should an affected business evaluate its options?
For organizations reviewing a VMware strategy more broadly, IBM Consulting has outlined three general paths: continue modernizing with VMware, rehost on another virtual platform, or containerize and modernize applications. These are general choices, not terms of the 11:11 transfer. IBM’s suggested comparison factors include application criticality and type, license-renewal timing, technology-refresh cycles, transformation risk, operating model and available skills. See IBM Consulting’s VMware strategy overview.
Recommended Free Tools
- Continue with VMware: assess the service and licensing terms available for the specific environment and the organization’s renewal and refresh timelines.
- Rehost: compare the target platform’s operational model and migration risk against the needs of each workload.
- Modernize or containerize: weigh the transformation effort and skills required against application requirements and business priorities.
The right route depends on the individual workload and contract; the public transaction details do not resolve those decisions for customers.
