1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor browsing, documents and streaming, 32GB of RAM is not a general requirement. The extra capacity is easier to justify when the software and projects you use call for it: Adobe, for example, recommends 32GB or more for Premiere Pro on Windows when working with 4K or higher media, while its recommendation for HD media is 16GB. Check your applications and the laptop configuration before paying more.
When 16GB is likely to be enough
Microsoft’s laptop buying guide describes 8GB as fine for light browsing and most tasks, gives 8GB to 16GB as its broad RAM recommendation, and says photo or video editing may call for closer to 16GB. That is a general buying guide, not a guarantee for every application or workload. Microsoft’s laptop buying guide

Windows 11’s official minimum is 4GB, but a minimum system requirement is an operating-system floor, not a recommendation for a comfortable everyday laptop. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements

#1 Best Overall
- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
When 32GB has a stronger case
Premiere Pro work with 4K or higher media
Adobe’s requirements for Premiere 26.x, last updated September 16, 2026, recommend 16GB for HD media on Windows and 32GB or more for 4K and higher media on Windows. These are application recommendations for the specified media workflow, not a universal rule for all video editing or a promise of a particular performance gain. Adobe Premiere Pro system requirements
Other demanding applications or large projects
For software outside that Premiere example, use the current requirements from the software maker and consider the size and complexity of your actual projects. Microsoft’s broad guidance places gaming in a 16GB-to-64GB range; that range does not mean every gamer needs 32GB. Its Copilot+ PC specification lists 16GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 RAM, which is a category-specific requirement rather than evidence of a general 32GB threshold. Compare the laptop, not just the memory number
There is no universal surcharge that makes 32GB worth buying. Compare the live prices of otherwise similar configurations, then weigh memory against the rest of the laptop: processor, graphics, storage and display. A more expensive memory option is not automatically the better purchase if another configuration better fits your work.

- Compatible with select Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop DIMM, non DDR4 memory, or ECC memory types such as RDIMM, LRDIMM, and ECC UDIMM
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
- Check the requirements for the exact applications you use, including operating system and processor platform.
- For Premiere, distinguish HD from 4K or higher media and check Adobe’s current requirements for your version.
- Confirm whether the specific laptop can be upgraded later. Upgradeability varies by model, and general software requirements do not tell you whether a particular laptop’s RAM is replaceable or expandable.
Apple silicon uses a different memory description
Adobe’s Premiere requirements list 16GB of unified memory for Apple silicon. That is Adobe’s platform-specific recommendation; do not treat it as a direct equivalent to its separate Windows recommendations or generalize it to all Mac applications. Check the current requirements for the software and Mac configuration you plan to use. Adobe Premiere Pro system requirements
How to make the 16GB-versus-32GB decision
- Write down your main workloads. Separate everyday browser and document use from editing, gaming or other demanding work.
- Check the software maker’s current requirements. Match the listed recommendation to your operating system, processor platform and project type.
- Compare equivalent laptop configurations. Check the actual price difference alongside CPU, graphics, storage and display, rather than assuming more RAM is always the best upgrade.
- Verify upgrade options for the exact model. If you are considering starting with less memory, confirm whether that laptop can be upgraded and what its configuration permits.
Vendor requirements and recommendations help identify when extra memory may be appropriate; they do not establish how much RAM every person’s complete workflow consumes. Nor do they demonstrate that 32GB automatically makes every laptop faster.
