Before changing camera settings or booking a repair, clean the iPhone’s front and rear camera glass with a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber or lens cloth. Fingerprints, oil, dust and residue can cause blur, haze, halos, glare and washed-out contrast. Apple recommends this cleaning step for blurry photos, along with removing cases, films and accessories that may obstruct the camera: Apple’s camera troubleshooting guide.
The one-minute iPhone camera fix
- Remove the case if its camera opening is narrow, dirty or damaged.
- Inspect the front and rear camera glass under a bright light.
- Use a clean, dry, soft, lint-free microfiber or lens cloth. Check that it contains no grit.
- Gently wipe the glass in small circular motions. Use a clean section for the front camera if needed.
- Take a comparison photo with the case, lens protector and other camera accessories removed.
This may solve blur caused by external contamination or an accessory. It cannot repair cracked glass, internal condensation, a damaged camera module or failed autofocus.

Why a tiny smudge changes the picture
The outer camera glass is part of the optical path. A thin film of skin oil or lotion scatters light before it reaches the sensor. The result can look like a software problem even when the camera hardware is fine.
- Soft or smeared detail
- Haze and reduced contrast
- Halos around lamps and streetlights
- More lens flare than usual
- Uneven sharpness across the frame
- A foggy-looking patch or apparent focus problem
Compare several photos rather than judging the camera from one image. A dirty lens often affects different modes in similar ways, while a failing individual module may produce a fixed or camera-specific symptom.

How to clean an iPhone camera safely
- Disconnect cables and, preferably, turn off the iPhone.
- Remove the case and any camera-lens protector.
- Fold the clean microfiber cloth and wipe gently; do not scrub.
- Keep liquid away from the camera surround, microphones, speakers, buttons and seams.
- Photograph the same detailed subject that previously looked blurry.
Apple advises using a soft, lint-free cloth and avoiding abrasive cloths, towels, paper products, aerosol sprays and direct liquid application: Apple’s cleaning guidance.
When an approved disinfecting wipe is reasonable
For stubborn makeup, food or lotion residue, Apple permits a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe, a 75% ethyl alcohol wipe or a Clorox Disinfecting Wipe on hard, nonporous exterior surfaces. Use it sparingly and gently; never soak the phone, let liquid pool around the camera or spray cleaner directly onto the device. A dry microfiber cloth remains the best first choice.

Materials and methods to avoid
- Paper towels, tissues, clothing or rough fabric
- Household glass cleaner, bleach, ammonia, solvents or hydrogen-peroxide products
- Compressed air as a routine cleaning method
- Pins, toothpicks or metal tools around the camera
- Excessive pressure or repeated aggressive wiping
Water resistance does not make an iPhone washable. Keep moisture out of openings and never submerge it. Apple’s user guide also warns that high-intensity sources such as laser beams or LiDAR systems can damage the image sensor; that is separate from ordinary indoor or outdoor light exposure: iPhone safety and handling guidance.

Remove accessories before blaming the camera
Repeat the photo test with every external camera accessory removed. Apple specifically lists cases, films, lens converters and other attachments as possible obstructions: camera troubleshooting steps.

Do not conclude that every MagSafe product damages an iPhone. The concern is a strong magnet or magnetic metal placed close enough to the rear camera to affect systems that move lens elements. Apple explains the risk to optical image stabilization (OIS) and closed-loop autofocus here: Apple’s magnetic-interference guidance. Apple lists OIS on iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7 and later, including second- and third-generation iPhone SE, with stated camera exceptions; closed-loop autofocus is listed for iPhone XS and later, including those SE generations. These specifications do not mean every camera on every model uses both systems.
A repeatable test after cleaning
- Photograph small text or a detailed object in ordinary, even light.
- Photograph a bright but safe scene and look for new halos or flare.
- Test the front camera and each rear camera available, such as Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto.
- Record a short video as well as taking still photos.
- Repeat with and without the case, protector and magnetic accessory.
If only one camera remains affected, note which one. If every camera improves after wiping, contamination was the likely cause. If symptoms change only when an accessory is attached, replace or reposition that accessory.

What to do if photos are still blurry
- Clean both camera surfaces again with a clean cloth and remove all accessories.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Install the latest available iOS update.
- Test the LED flashlight from Control Center. If it behaves inconsistently, open Camera and try a different flash setting, as Apple recommends.
- Compare the front, rear, video and low-light results.
Persistent blur, a black camera screen, autofocus that cannot lock, unusual mechanical sounds, internal-looking haze, a fixed dark spot, cracked glass or a problem that began after a drop or liquid exposure may require service. Apple provides in-person and mail-in options at Apple iPhone Repair; out-of-warranty charges depend on the model and inspection, and authorized providers may set their own fees.

- Wipe the camera glass before important photos when fingerprints are visible.
- Keep the microfiber cloth clean and grit-free; wash or replace it when it becomes dirty.
- Clean the inside edge of the case’s camera opening.
- Inspect lens protectors for scratches, dust and clouding.
- Remove questionable magnetic accessories while diagnosing blur, especially in low light.
- Never spray liquid directly onto the iPhone.
You probably already own everything needed: the phone and a clean microfiber cloth. A premium display-polishing cloth or individually packaged optical wipe is optional convenience, not a requirement for this camera check.
