I Used a Journaling App I Hated for a Whole Year

Thanh Pham kept using a journaling app he disliked because he had paid for an annual subscription. His story offers a practical way to reassess commitments.

Thanh Pham says he kept using a journaling app he disliked because he had already paid for its annual subscription. The payment had already been made; the question that mattered was whether using the app still offered enough value to justify the effort. His story is a reminder to judge a tool by what it can do for you from here on, not by what you have already spent.

Why he kept opening an app he disliked

Pham describes the app’s interface as unpleasant and says opening it felt like a chore. Still, he continued using it for a year because the annual subscription was paid for. He eventually switched to a tool he enjoyed, but he does not name either app.

That is the tension at the heart of his essay: a past payment can make it feel wasteful to stop, even when continuing costs time and energy without delivering enough value. The subscription money cannot be recovered simply by using the app more. The practical decision is whether the app is worth choosing now.

Three questions for a commitment that is not working

Pham suggests asking these questions when a tool or other commitment has become hard to justify:

  1. Does it bring joy or value?

  2. Is it helping me reach my goals?

  3. If I had not already invested time or money, would I still choose to keep this?

A “no” is a reason to consider letting go, not an order to quit immediately. The point is to make the decision on its current and future merits rather than treating past investment as proof that you must continue.

Start with one low-stakes item

A full audit of your commitments can feel daunting. Pham’s practical suggestion is to begin with one easy, low-stakes item, such as an unused subscription or a recurring meeting that is not productive. Ask what dropping it would make possible: less expense, time returned, or room for an option that fits better.

For a journaling app, that might mean noticing whether its friction prevents you from writing, then considering whether a different tool would better support the habit. This is an application of Pham’s questions, not a product recommendation; his essay does not identify the replacement he chose.

The useful question to take away

Pham puts the test simply: “If I hadn’t already invested time or money, would I still choose to keep this?” It applies beyond apps—to subscriptions, routines, and recurring obligations. His account is personal rather than a quantified test of journaling tools, but its decision principle is clear: weigh what a commitment gives you now against what it asks of you going forward.
