A laptop with a broken screen can still be useful as a home server if it boots, runs reliably, and the fault does not affect the job. The same is not true of every broken laptop: a machine with an unstable power or motherboard fault may be unsuitable, and a swollen battery makes continued use unsafe. The practical first step is to identify what failed, then decide whether the laptop can safely host a modest task such as local file or media serving.
Can you use a laptop with a broken screen?
Often, yes. A damaged display does not automatically prevent a laptop from running as a server on your home network. Guides describe repurposing laptops with broken screens for file or media serving, but that does not establish compatibility for every model or fault (Tech With Galvan’s practical guide).

A screen fault may be irrelevant after setup; a failure that prevents stable operation is not. What can you do with an old broken laptop?
Choose a role that fits both the hardware and the fault. A home-network server is one realistic option for modest tasks, not a guarantee that an old laptop can handle every service.

Is it safe to keep using an old laptop with a damaged battery?
Do not keep using or charging a laptop with a swollen battery. HP’s recycling guidance says: “If a battery looks swollen, stop using and charging the laptop, and take it to a recycler as soon as you can” (HP recycling guidance). Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local recycling rules; do not assume an old battery is safe as backup power for an unattended server.

Battery disposal instructions can vary by manufacturer. Dell, for example, says its batteries should not go in household trash or regular recycling bins; follow the appropriate local and manufacturer guidance for your device (Dell battery disposal guidance).
How to decide whether your laptop is a good server candidate
- Identify the fault. Work out whether the problem is limited to a component the new role will not need, such as the display, or affects booting, power, cooling, storage, or stable operation.
- Inspect the battery. If it is swollen or otherwise visibly damaged, stop using and charging the laptop and arrange appropriate recycling rather than running it unattended.
- Check that it can sustain the job. Confirm that it powers on reliably, stays cool, and has enough CPU, memory, and usable storage for one limited task. A machine that fails during ordinary operation is not a dependable server.
- Pick one job first. Start with a specific need, such as serving files on your home network, rather than loading the laptop with services before you know what it can handle.
- Plan network access. The server needs a connection to your home network. Wi-Fi may be enough; an Ethernet cable is an optional choice if both the laptop and router support wired networking.
- Choose and configure a suitable operating system. Setup depends on the system you select. A secondary Ubuntu Server walkthrough recommends disabling sleep for its setup, but that is not a universal instruction for every laptop or operating system. Configure power behavior appropriately for your device and intended use.
- Keep another copy of important files. A server is not, by itself, a backup strategy. Maintain a separate backup before relying on the repurposed laptop to hold important personal data.
What changes if the laptop is a Chromebook?
Chromebook troubleshooting is device-specific. Google’s Chromebook help recommends working through its troubleshooting steps and contacting the manufacturer if the problem persists; those instructions should not be applied to other laptop types as if they were universal (Google Chromebook troubleshooting).

What this reuse does—and does not—establish
Repurposing can give a working laptop a new job, but it does not prove that the machine is safe, reliable, energy-efficient, or suitable for a particular workload. Those judgments depend on the actual fault, battery condition, hardware, operating system, and use. Before handing the laptop on or recycling it, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for removing personal data and for reuse or disposal; HP provides guidance on these topics (HP reuse and recycling guidance).
