YouTube is bringing Ask YouTube, its conversational search feature, to mobile. In the YouTube app, tap Search, then Ask, and enter a question. The rollout is gradual, so the option may not appear for every account yet.
What Ask YouTube does
Ask YouTube is a conversational option alongside standard YouTube search. You can ask a more complex question, get a response that draws on real-time information from the web and YouTube, then explore related material or ask a follow-up. For example, YouTube suggests asking it to “plan a 3-day roadtrip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara.” Its example response may organize stops and local tips alongside video material; it is an illustration of the feature, not a guarantee that every answer will be complete or accurate.
How to use it on a phone
- Open the YouTube app and tap Search.
- Tap Ask in the search interface.
- Enter your question in natural language.
- Read the response and explore any text, videos, Shorts, or clips shown.
- Choose a suggested refinement or type a follow-up to continue.
TeamYouTube announced the mobile rollout on August 12, 2026, saying viewers could start a conversation by tapping Ask in the app’s search bar. The announcement described an experiment for signed-in viewers aged 13 or older, in English, in the United States, across desktop, mobile, and TV. This is a distinction in the way YouTube describes the two experiences, not evidence that Ask YouTube is always more useful or accurate.
Availability and eligibility
YouTube Help currently lists Ask YouTube for English-language searches in the United States on computer, mobile, and TV, and says availability is expanding gradually. It is not available to supervised child accounts or in the YouTube Kids app. Availability can change, and the mobile option may not yet be visible to you. YouTube Help: Search with Ask YouTube

If you do not see Ask, the official materials do not identify reinstalling the app or changing devices as a way to gain access. The announcement and Help page describe a rollout, not a setting or workaround that guarantees eligibility.

How YouTube says it selects clips
YouTube says its Ask YouTube ranking system prioritizes relevance, engagement, and quality when selecting clips. Playlists and Premium-exclusive content are not currently eligible to appear in Ask YouTube results. What YouTube says about privacy
YouTube says Ask YouTube conversations are not used to show ads. Its Help page also says conversations are disconnected from a user’s Google Account before reviewers see them, and automated tools remove personal information such as email addresses and phone numbers. Those statements describe specific protections; they should not be read as a complete account of all data handling. YouTube Help
