It is a compelling option if you want navigation without relying on Google Maps, especially for walking, cycling, driving, or travel with limited connectivity. Whether it can replace Google Maps for you depends on local map coverage and which features you rely on.
What Organic Maps is—and what “de-Googled” means here
Organic Maps is a standalone mobile maps and GPS app, not a modified edition of Google Maps. The project describes it as a privacy-focused app for hiking, cycling, biking, and driving. It uses OpenStreetMap data, which is maintained by a community rather than supplied as a single uniform commercial map database. That means detail and freshness can vary by place.

The project says Organic Maps is free and open source, with no ads, tracking, data collection, or required registration. Those are the project’s stated policies, not the result of an independent audit of the app’s network behavior. What you can do with it
Download maps and search offline
Organic Maps supports detailed offline maps and offline search. You need to download the relevant map regions while connected before relying on them without internet access. Offline search can help you find mapped places in a downloaded area, but it cannot guarantee that every address, business, or point of interest is listed or current.

Navigate on foot, by bike, or by car
The project lists turn-by-turn navigation with voice guidance for walking, cycling, and driving, along with cycling routes and hiking trails. It also lists metro maps. These features make the app relevant for both everyday routes and trips where offline access matters; the published feature list alone does not establish route accuracy or complete transit coverage in a particular city.
Save and move your own map data

How to judge whether it can replace Google Maps for you
There is no universal winner based on feature lists alone. OpenStreetMap coverage and update timing differ by region, and the available evidence does not establish head-to-head route accuracy, live-traffic parity, business-review coverage, or transit completeness. Test Organic Maps against the destinations and trips you actually use before depending on it as your only navigator.

- Search: Look up your regular addresses, shops, and landmarks in your neighborhood and in places you travel. Check whether names, entrances, and useful details are present.
- Routes: Compare representative walking, cycling, and driving trips. Inspect the route itself rather than assuming that a plausible-looking result is the best one.
- Transit and traffic: If your routine depends on public-transit directions or live traffic information, verify those requirements directly. The documented feature list does not establish that they match Google Maps.
- Offline use: Download the areas you need in advance, then check that map viewing, search, and your intended navigation mode work under the connectivity conditions you expect.
- Freshness: Consider how recently local roads and points of interest appear to have been updated. A community-maintained map can be detailed, but local completeness is not guaranteed.
Availability and map-data freshness
Organic Maps publishes the app for several Android and iOS distribution channels; availability and release timing can differ between stores. When the F-Droid listing was accessed, it displayed version 2026.09.29-32-FDroid, with OpenStreetMap data dated September 28, 2026, and Wikipedia data dated September 21, 2026. Who should try Organic Maps?
- Good fit: People who want an open-source map app, value the project’s stated privacy approach, or need downloadable maps and offline search.
- Worth testing carefully: Cyclists, hikers, and drivers whose routes depend on particular local trails, roads, or mapped points of interest.
- Not safe to assume as a full replacement: Anyone whose daily navigation depends on specific transit directions, live traffic, or business information should confirm those features in their own area before switching.
For a cycling setup, the app’s cycling navigation can be paired with a phone mount, but choose one that fits your phone and handlebar rather than assuming a particular accessory will be compatible.
