ET Startup Awards 2026: Satyan Gajwani on Government Backing, Patient Capital, AI and Chips

At the ET Startup Awards 2026 in Bengaluru, Times Internet Chairman Satyan Gajwani said India’s startup ecosystem is maturing as founders move into artificial intelligence, semiconductors and other deep technologies—and as investors become more willing to wait for long development cycles. He argued that closing India’s AI gap will require deeper research, serious computing capacity, entrepreneurial ambition and patient capital. Those are prescriptions he offered, not evidence that the underlying constraints have been solved.

What did Satyan Gajwani say about AI and chips?

Gajwani described a shift from the sectors that defined earlier startup waves toward harder, longer-horizon fields: semiconductors, AI, robotics, clean-energy technologies and new materials. He presented this move, alongside investors prepared to wait longer for returns, as a sign of a more mature ecosystem. The Economic Times’ event video report, updated October 9, 2026, framed his remarks around the idea that if an Indian startup can reach orbit, India can build AI the world wants.

The report uses Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 launch as an example from Gajwani’s speech. It is best understood here as part of his argument about what Indian startups might accomplish, rather than as independent proof of progress in AI or chipmaking.

What does he think India needs to close its AI gap?

Gajwani assessed India’s AI progress as slower than it should be. His proposed response combined four ingredients: deeper research, serious compute, entrepreneurial vision and capital willing to support long development timelines. The report does not quantify the AI gap, compute shortfall or financing requirement, so these points are a qualitative diagnosis and prescription, not a measured scorecard.

Arduino® UNO™ Q 4GB [ABX00173]- Hybrid Board, Qualcomm Dragonwing QRB2210 microprocessor (MPU) & STM32U585 Microcontroller(MCU), AI Vision, Voice, IoT, Robotics, Linux Debian OS, Wi-Fi 5, USB-C
  • Dual-Brain Hybrid Power: Combines the Qualcomm Dragonwing QRB2210 MPU (Quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 @ 2.0 GHz CPU, Adreno GPU, AI acceleration) and the real-time, low-power STM32U585 MCU for advanced applications like object recognition, voice commands, and motion detection.
  • AI & Linux Capabilities: Unlocks AI-powered vision and sound solutions; runs Linux Debian OS for coding in Python and supports the Arduino ecosystem with libraries and Sketches; quick start with Arduino App Lab.
  • Advanced Features: Equipped with 4 GB LPDDR4 RAM, 32 GB eMMC built-in storage, ideal for single-board computer (SBC) mode, running multiple simultaneous high-level processes, more complex AI or ML models, extensive logs. Dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (2.4/5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.1, and high-speed headers for vision, audio, and display peripherals.
  • Seamless Expansion & Connectivity: Features the classic UNO form factor for shields compatibility, an 8x13 LED matrix, and a Qwiic connector for easy expansion with Modulino nodes; power and connect via the USB-C connector.
  • Intended Use & Development: The perfect platform for prototyping robotics or IoT projects, empowering innovators with a unified development experience to mix Arduino Sketches, Python scripts, and containerized AI models in a single interface.
  • Deep research: build the knowledge and technical foundations needed for ambitious AI work.
  • Serious compute: ensure access to the computing resources needed to develop and run advanced AI systems.
  • Entrepreneurial vision: encourage founders to pursue difficult, high-impact opportunities rather than only nearer-term ventures.
  • Patient capital: make financing compatible with the long, uncertain path from research and engineering to viable products.

These elements reinforce one another: research and computing can enable technical progress, but founders also need the ambition to turn that capacity into ventures and investors who can tolerate longer timelines. That is the logic of Gajwani’s prescription, not a ranking of which constraint matters most.

How does government backing fit into the discussion?

A separate deep-tech panel at the same awards event addressed the practical difficulty of building capital-intensive products and bringing them to market. According to The Economic Times’ October 10, 2026 report on the panel, founders discussed domestic capability-building and supply-chain challenges, and argued that government should act as an early customer.

  • Advanced Features: Equipped with 2 GB LPDDR4 RAM, 16 GB eMMC built-in storage, ideal to develop in PC-connected mode, running the OS, Python scripts, and basic network services (SSH) without a demanding GUI or heavy multitasking; great for lightweight AI and memory-optimized TinyML applications, needing local storage for basic OS and core libraries.

That panel discussion is distinct from Gajwani’s address. It points to a possible role for public demand in helping deep-tech firms establish products and capabilities, but it does not show that a particular procurement programme exists or that government action has already resolved financing or supply constraints. The distinction matters: Gajwani’s speech focused on what India needs to compete in AI, while panel participants made a separate case about early customers and the market challenges facing deep-tech companies.

What did Gajwani say the previous year?

In his 2025 Startup Awards remarks, Gajwani had also called for AI innovation centres bringing talent, compute and capital together, as well as deep research, patient capital and visionary policymaking. The overlap suggests continuity in the themes he has emphasized. It does not establish that those ideas have since been implemented as policy or that they have produced particular outcomes.
