Atuin makes it easier to find a command you have run before: instead of relying on a basic reverse-history search, you can browse an interactive list of past commands with details such as the directory and whether the command succeeded. It is useful when you remember the task or a fragment of its syntax, but not the exact command. It does not replace learning commands you have never run.
What Atuin changes about shell history
Atuin is a shell-history tool that stores command history in a local SQLite database and provides interactive search. Its documentation says entries can include context such as the working directory, duration, success status, machine, and session. That extra context can help distinguish two commands that look similar when all you have is a line of text. Atuin’s overview describes the recorded history and search workflow.

For example, if you remember that you used a disk-management command from a particular project directory but cannot recall its flags, search for a distinctive word or fragment. You can inspect matching history and choose the relevant entry rather than reconstructing the command from memory. The result is a searchable record of your own past work, not a general-purpose explanation of what a command does.
Install it and search your history
-
Install Atuin and enable your shell integration
Atuin’s quickstart shows this installer command:
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -LsSf https://setup.atuin.sh | sh. If you prefer a package manager or manual setup, use the official installation guide for your platform. Installation alone is not enough: Atuin needs to be initialized by your shell.#1 Best Overall
-
Import commands you already have
Atuin records new commands after its shell integration is active. To bring in existing shell history, run
atuin import auto; this is a separate step from installation. The command detects the shell and imports its existing history, as described in the quickstart. -
Open interactive search
Use Ctrl+R or the Up arrow to search. Select a result and press Enter to run it, or press Tab to put it on the command line for editing first. Editing is the safer choice when you need to change a path, option, or other argument.
Check compatibility with your shell
Atuin lists zsh, bash, fish, nushell, xonsh, and PowerShell, but support tiers and feature coverage differ. Its current matrix identifies zsh, bash, and fish as tier 1 and PowerShell as tier 2; do not assume every feature works equally across all shells or operating systems. Check the live shell support matrix for your exact combination before installing.
Keep sync optional
Local search works without an account or synchronization. If you want history available on multiple machines, Atuin documents both its hosted sync service and self-hosted server options. Atuin describes synced history as end-to-end encrypted; that is the vendor’s stated security design, not an independent security audit. Because shell history may contain sensitive operational details, decide whether syncing it fits your needs. See the sync guide for setup and details.
Enabling sync also means taking responsibility for the generated encryption key. Atuin says the key is required to sign in on other machines and cannot be recovered if lost. Store it somewhere secure and accessible to you before relying on sync.

Atuin’s history capture depends on shell hooks, so the shell must be interactive, its relevant startup configuration must be loaded, and Atuin initialization must run. An embedded terminal may use a different shell configuration from your regular terminal. Check the shell setup documentation if the integration does not load.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Rank #4
- Confirm Atuin is initialized in the configuration file used by the shell you are actually running.
- Check whether the shell is interactive; non-interactive sessions do not provide the same history-hook workflow.
- For an IDE or other embedded terminal, verify that it loads the expected shell and startup configuration.
- After setup, run a new command and search again; import older history separately with
atuin import auto.
