I Stopped Giving Claude Code My Entire Project—and My Usage Lasted 4× Longer

The reported 4× longer Claude usage is a personal result, not a benchmark. Here’s how narrower file scope may help and how to assess it for your own tasks.

Giving Claude Code only the files relevant to a task can reduce the context it processes, which may help conserve token usage. The headline’s “4x longer” is the author’s reported personal result—not a verified benchmark or a promise of the same savings for other users.

What the 4× claim means

An XDA Developers headline by Mahnoor Faisal says the author stopped giving Claude Code the entire project and that Claude usage then lasted “4x longer.” A September 18, 2026 AIpresso summary describes the practical change as directing Claude Code to relevant files instead of letting it search the whole project.

The available account does not establish a controlled comparison, baseline, account plan, task mix, measurement period, or what “lasted” means. Treat 4× as the author’s reported experience, not a general result. Anthropic’s documentation supports the underlying idea, but not that multiplier.

Why a narrower context can help

Anthropic says, “Token costs scale with context size: the more context Claude processes, the more tokens you use.” Supplying less irrelevant project material can therefore reduce the context Claude processes. It does not follow that repository exploration is always wasteful: Claude may need to discover dependencies or locate unfamiliar code to complete a task correctly.

The useful distinction is between asking Claude to inspect everything by default and giving it enough scope to solve the specific problem. Start with known relevant files when you can; let the investigation widen when the task requires it.

How to scope a Claude Code task

  1. Name the goal and the likely files. For example, ask Claude to fix a bug in a particular module and inspect its related tests, rather than beginning with an open-ended request to understand the entire repository.
  2. State what it should check. Include relevant behavior, constraints, or test expectations so Claude does not need to infer the task from broad project context.
  3. Allow targeted discovery. If the named files are insufficient, ask Claude to trace a specific dependency or locate the implementation involved. Narrow context is a starting point, not a ban on searching.
  4. Put lasting project guidance in CLAUDE.md. Anthropic documents project memory and instructions for durable guidance. Use it for stable conventions that apply across tasks, rather than repeatedly adding the same instructions to prompts.
  5. Reset between unrelated jobs. Run /clear when changing to an unrelated task. Anthropic says stale context can waste tokens on subsequent messages.

Check whether it changes your usage

Use /usage to inspect current usage. Anthropic notes that the display can vary by authentication method and plan, so treat it as an account-specific indicator rather than a universal token counter.

For a meaningful personal comparison, compare similar tasks using the same model, account plan, and time window. Anthropic notes that usage varies with model, codebase size, and usage patterns; changing several of those at once makes it difficult to tell whether file scoping made a difference.

  • Compare tasks of roughly similar complexity and codebase size.
  • Keep the model and account plan consistent.
  • Use the same measurement window and interpret the usage display in light of your plan.
  • Record whether you supplied targeted files or began with broad repository discovery.

What to take away

Pointing Claude Code toward task-relevant files is a sensible way to avoid unnecessary context when you already know where the work is. Anthropic’s context-size guidance explains why it may help. The author’s reported 4× result is not enough to predict your own savings, so check your usage under comparable conditions rather than treating the headline as a guarantee.
