On Debian, apt install ffmpeg means more than copying one executable: APT may install required dependencies, and package installation can run scripts supplied by packages. That does not mean every install makes sweeping changes—or that a particular FFmpeg package rewrote a machine. The useful question is what APT proposes to change before you approve it.
As the author puts it, “I wanted a tool on my machine. ffmpeg.” The concern behind “I Did Not Say Rewrite My Machine” is about making that request with eyes open, not evidence that FFmpeg itself caused a specific system change.

What does “install ffmpeg” authorize APT to do?
On Debian, the install operation retrieves and installs the packages you name and the dependencies APT determines are required. If a newer version of a named package is available, APT can update it as part of the operation. The exact plan depends on the system’s installed packages and configured repositories. See the Debian Bookworm apt-get manual.

Debian Policy says: “It is possible to supply scripts as part of a package which the package management system will run for you when your package is installed, upgraded or removed.” Policy documents preinst, postinst, prerm and postrm scripts. This describes what packages can provide; it does not establish that every package uses every script, or that a particular FFmpeg package does anything harmful. See Debian Policy Manual, section 6.1.

So an install changes system-managed package state and may execute package-supplied setup code. That is a reason to review the proposed transaction, not a basis for assuming the machine will be broadly rewritten.
How to preview the Debian package transaction
-
Ask APT to simulate the install:
apt-get --simulate install ffmpegRead the proposed package operations, including packages to install, upgrade or remove. The simulation prints a plan without changing the system. It reflects the installed state and repositories at the time you run it, so a later transaction can differ.
-
If you want to download package files before installing them, use:
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.apt-get --download-only install ffmpegThis retrieves the files but does not unpack or install them. It is a staging step, not an inspection or safety guarantee.
-
To extract a downloaded Debian package’s control information, use:
dpkg-deb --control package.deb directoryThe short form is
dpkg-deb -e. Replacepackage.debwith the actual file anddirectorywith the destination directory. Inspecting the extracted control files can help you review package metadata and lifecycle scripts, but it does not prove that all package behavior or dependencies are safe. See the Debian Bookworm dpkg-deb manual.Rank #3
APT’s --simulate option is also documented as --dry-run and --no-act. A simulation shows planned package operations; it is not an audit of the code those packages contain. Likewise, reading control files is one useful review step, not a complete security assessment.

These commands have different scopes in the Debian Bookworm apt-get manual:
| Command | Documented behavior | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
apt-get install ffmpeg |
Installs the requested package and required packages; a newer available version of a named package may be installed. | APT resolves dependencies for the requested package. |
apt-get upgrade |
Upgrades currently installed packages without removing packages or installing packages that were not already installed. | It does not add new packages to resolve an upgrade. |
apt-get dist-upgrade |
Can remove packages to resolve changing dependencies. | Its dependency resolution can involve removals, so review its simulation before proceeding. |
These descriptions are specific to the Debian Bookworm manual, not a universal account of package managers on other operating systems. The documented options and behaviors are in the apt-get manual.
Choosing how to obtain FFmpeg
The right route depends on whether you prioritize distribution integration, project-source provenance or a ready-to-run executable. These options differ in maintenance and how much review they require:
| Route | Scope and provenance | Maintenance and inspection |
|---|---|---|
| Debian package through APT | Managed by the distribution’s package system; APT may install dependencies, and package lifecycle scripts may run. Version and behavior depend on the configured repositories and Debian release. | Review APT’s proposed transaction. Updates follow the distribution’s package process. |
| Official FFmpeg source release | The FFmpeg Project says, “FFmpeg only provides source code,” and documents release-signature verification. | Building from source requires a build workflow. It does not automatically reduce system changes; installing a build can still affect system files and configuration. |
| Compiled third-party build | The FFmpeg download page links to compiled builds and distribution packages provided by others, rather than presenting all binaries as FFmpeg-produced. | Evaluate the specific provider, supported platform, update path and its verification guidance. Apply the provider’s own checks rather than assuming the project’s release-signature instructions cover that build. |
For project guidance and official release information, use the FFmpeg download page. It lists FFmpeg 9.0.2 as released on 2026-09-18; check that page for the current release before choosing a version.
What a preview can—and cannot—tell you
-
A simulation helps you see the package operations APT currently proposes before it changes package state.
-
Downloading packages without installing them gives you files to examine, but does not itself validate their contents.
-
Extracting control information can expose metadata and included control files, but cannot establish that every dependency or behavior is safe.
-
Debian’s documentation supports claims about Debian package management. Do not assume these exact commands, lifecycle mechanics or safeguards apply to RPM, Alpine, macOS, Windows, containers or sandboxed package systems.
