In the author’s experience, the useful question shifts from “is the DEX encrypted?” to “when is protected code recovered, where does it appear, and how does it reach the Android runtime?” The article is a first-person walkthrough published on DEV Community in September 2026 by the author chatmay. It describes one APK, which the author says they owned or had permission to examine. It is not an independent test of XopProtector.
What the author set out to learn
The author approached the APK as a security researcher would approach any unfamiliar package. The goal was to understand how the protection worked, not to produce a fully restored copy of the application. The account says plainly that complete restoration was never the objective, which matters for how the result should be read. Nothing in the write-up claims a successful break, a measured level of protection, or a comparison against other protectors.

Why the decompiler view stopped short
The first step was ordinary. The author opened the APK as a container and inspected it in JADX. The visible Java side contained application startup code and shell or native-related components, but not the business classes one would expect in an unprotected app. The DEX files, assets and native libraries held the material of interest, and the obvious question followed: where had the original DEX gone?

A decompiler can only show what is present as readable bytecode at the moment you look. If the protection keeps the real classes out of that form until execution, the static view will look incomplete no matter how carefully you read it. The author treated that gap as information rather than as a dead end.

The question that changed the approach
The author’s central shift was from asking whether the DEX was encrypted to asking about its lifecycle. The article sharpens the inquiry into three questions:
- When is the DEX recovered?
- Where does the recovered data go?
- How does it eventually reach ART?
To answer them, the author pointed to the runtime components that handle class definition and loading: DexFile, ClassLoader, DefineClass, ClassLinker and ART. Understanding those components turned a question about a file format into a question about timing and ownership. The author also asked how long the plaintext exists and who gets access to it while the app runs. Those are the questions a defender should be asking when judging a protection scheme, and the article’s framing makes them easy to carry over to other apps.
Following the boundary into native code
The next step was to follow Java-to-JNI calls into native code and inspect the structures of the shared libraries. The author’s takeaway is that a Java or Smali-only view can miss relevant behavior whenever a protection design also relies on native components. If the important work happens across a language boundary, reading one side is not enough to describe what the app does.

XopProtector’s project documentation, on GitHub, describes a native shell and lists DEX encryption, dual VMP, SO protection and RASP among its capabilities. These are the project’s own claims. The author’s account does not independently confirm how well any of them work on the APK examined.
Two packing models in the project’s own terms
The article describes PVM2 as closer to a native interpreter than to the conventional model in which Java methods run on ART. The project’s repository draws a distinction between its two virtualization paths. The labels below are XopProtector’s terminology, not standard Android vocabulary.

Keeping these two paths separate prevents a common mistake: assuming every protected app is recovered to readable DEX in the same place and at the same time. A single decompiler workflow cannot cover both.

Where static inspection and runtime observation part ways
When static inspection stopped being enough, the author used Frida to observe runtime events. The events named include shared-library loading, file access, decryption, DEX recovery and class creation. Frida’s official documentation describes it as a dynamic instrumentation toolkit with tracing capabilities, which supports the choice of tool. It does not verify the author’s specific observations on this APK, so those should be read as the author’s report.
The useful distinction is between the two methods. Static analysis shows what is stored in the package. Runtime observation shows what becomes live in memory and when. A protected app often requires both, and neither alone answers the lifecycle question.
A working model for the same exercise
The article’s sequence can serve as a mental model, though it is not a guaranteed order for every Android app or every protection product:

- Inspect the APK contents, including DEX files, assets and native libraries.
- Note what is missing from the decompiled Java side, such as business classes that should be present.
- Trace the Java-to-JNI boundary and examine the shared-library structures involved.
- Observe at runtime when code is recovered, where it is written, and which class-loading components receive it.
- Follow the path into ART and record how long the plaintext remains available.
Each step narrows a different question. The first two identify that something is hidden, the third locates where it moves, and the last two establish timing and exposure.
What this account does and does not show
- It is one author’s analysis of one APK that the author says they owned or were authorized to examine.
- It does not measure XopProtector’s effectiveness, compare it with other protectors, or test it across Android versions, devices or performance conditions.
- It does not establish a complete restoration of the application.
- Its most reusable contribution is the change in question: from “can I read the code?” to “when and where does the code exist in usable form?”
The project’s own documentation states the limit that applies to any protector. In the README’s words, “Protection raises the cost of reverse engineering; it does not make an app unbreakable.” That sentence is the project’s statement, and it is the right frame for reading both the protector’s claims and the author’s experience.

How this changes the way you look at Android
The author’s experience suggests that an Android app is better understood as a sequence of states than as a fixed set of files. Packaged code, unpacked code, native code and code loaded into ART are different things, and a protection scheme chooses which of them an observer can see and when. Learning to trace that sequence is more useful than learning any single tool, because it applies whether the protection is XopProtector or something else.

For defenders, the same lens helps evaluate protection claims. Ask what is exposed in the package, what is exposed at load time, and what remains in memory after execution. Those are answerable questions in a way that a general statement about “strong protection” is not.
The author’s real achievement, as told, is a clearer mental model rather than a broken app. That is a reasonable outcome for a learning exercise, and it is the part of the account readers can apply directly.
