Antigravity shifts work from typing every change to directing agents that plan, edit, test and document multi-step tasks. Whether that saves 50% depends on how much of your work is repetitive, how carefully you review generated changes and how often agents need correction.
What Google Antigravity is
Google introduced Antigravity on November 18, 2025 as an agentic development platform. It was launched in public preview at no charge, with generous Gemini 3 Pro rate limits described by Google at launch. Rather than functioning only as an autocomplete or chat panel, Antigravity is designed to carry out software tasks across the editor, terminal and browser.

The original product combines two working surfaces:
- Editor: a synchronous coding surface with Tab completions, inline commands and an agent side panel.
- Agent Manager: an asynchronous mission-control view for spawning, coordinating and observing agents across workspaces.
Agents report through Artifacts, including task lists, implementation plans, walkthroughs, screenshots and browser recordings. Those artifacts give you an inspectable record of what an agent intended to do and what it actually produced.

How the workflow differs from conventional VS Code
A conventional VS Code session usually keeps you in one foreground loop: inspect a file, type or paste a change, run a command and repeat. Antigravity extends that loop into delegation.
| Workflow dimension | Conventional VS Code pattern | Antigravity pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Delegation depth | Autocomplete, commands and chat suggestions | Multi-step plans, sandboxed subagents, terminal execution and end-to-end refactoring |
| Verification | You run tests and inspect generated code directly | Agents can run tests and provide plans, diffs, screenshots and browser recordings for review |
| Concurrency | One main foreground session | Multiple agents can work asynchronously across workspaces |
| Editor continuity | Everything happens in the editor | The extension keeps the VS Code editor while the Manager or separate app handles orchestration |
| Integrations | Local files, terminals and installed extensions | Browser control, MCP-connected tools, Remote-SSH and Google ecosystem integrations |
Google’s own description is deliberately broader than “AI autocomplete”: Antigravity is intended to plan and execute work under your supervision, not silently replace engineering judgment.

Installing Antigravity in VS Code
- Open VS Code and go to the Extensions view.
- Search the VS Code Marketplace for Google Antigravity.
- Install the extension published by Google.
- Use the new Antigravity entry in the Activity Bar to sign in with an Antigravity plan.
- Open a workspace and start with a small request so you can inspect the generated plan and permissions before delegating a larger change.
The August 18, 2026 version 1.0.0 release added sidebar chat, inline diff review, interactive implementation-plan artifacts and Remote-SSH support. It also lists accept/reject controls, an artifact viewer for plans and Markdown, workspace-scoped conversations, and automatic backend installation with integrity verification.
A practical agent-first coding loop
- Describe the outcome. State the feature, affected constraints, tests and files or services that must not change.
- Request a plan first. Read the implementation-plan artifact and ask questions before allowing multi-file edits.
- Delegate the implementation. Let the agent modify files in its sandbox and run the relevant terminal commands.
- Review the evidence. Inspect inline diffs, test output, screenshots or browser recordings rather than accepting a verbal summary.
- Accept, reject or comment. Use the extension’s review controls to keep only changes that meet the plan and project standards.
- Return to the editor. Keep VS Code available for code-path inspection, compiler diagnostics, debugging and small localized adjustments.
This division matters: Google’s extension guidance says the editor remains essential for inspecting code and diagnostics even when agents handle larger tasks.

Why coding time might fall
Antigravity provides several mechanisms that can remove manual effort:
- One request can cover a multi-file implementation instead of repeated file-by-file edits.
- Tests and other terminal work can run while you review a plan or work on another task.
- Specialized subagents can work in parallel, reducing idle time on independent tasks.
- Browser automation can check a user interface without requiring every interaction to be performed manually.
- Artifacts organize plans and evidence, making review faster than reconstructing a sequence of raw tool calls.
Those mechanisms explain how an individual could report a large improvement. They do not establish a general 50% productivity gain. No official source cited here reports that developers halve coding time, and there is no independent controlled benchmark supporting that figure.

How to test the “half the time” claim honestly
Measure the complete cycle, not just the time until an agent produces its first diff. For comparable tasks, record:
- Task type, scope and acceptance criteria
- Baseline time in the previous workflow
- Agent runtime and waiting time
- Human planning, review, debugging and correction time
- Test failures, rework and regressions
- The number of tasks and the measurement period
A useful result would report median end-to-end time for similar tasks and show whether savings came from delegation, parallelism or fewer manual edits. A single successful feature is an anecdote, not a benchmark.

Can Antigravity replace VS Code?
For developers who already use VS Code, the extension can preserve the familiar editor while adding agent orchestration. That makes it a migration path rather than an all-or-nothing replacement. You still need the editor for precise navigation, diagnostics, debugging and changes that are faster to make yourself.
Antigravity now also includes a standalone desktop app, Antigravity CLI and an Antigravity SDK. Google I/O 2026 presents the desktop app as a surface for parallel multi-agent orchestration, the CLI as a terminal-first option and the SDK as a way to build custom agent behaviors on your own infrastructure. Those options may suit teams that do not want the VS Code extension to be their primary interface.
Plans, limits and enterprise constraints
Google’s August 2026 extension announcement says individual developers can sign in with any Antigravity plan, including the free tier. Google I/O 2026 announced a Google AI Ultra plan starting at $100 per month and described its Antigravity usage limit as five times higher than the AI Pro plan. Prices, quotas and availability can change, so check the current plan terms before committing to a workflow that depends on high agent volume.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEnterprise access follows a different path. Google documents Gemini Enterprise or Google Cloud credentials, IAM policies and VPC Service Controls, and says enterprise data is not used to train foundation models. Its IDE overview also states that the Antigravity IDE is not supported for enterprise customers; those customers should use the Antigravity app or CLI instead.
Risks and review points
- Incorrect scope: an agent can interpret an ambiguous request too broadly; require a plan and explicit file boundaries.
- Passing tests, wrong behavior: tests may miss UX, security or data-integrity problems; inspect the diff and evidence.
- Usage exhaustion: parallel agents and long-running tasks consume plan limits faster than autocomplete.
- Integration permissions: browser, MCP and remote connections expand what an agent can reach; apply least-privilege credentials.
- Enterprise mismatch: confirm whether your organization must use the app or CLI rather than the IDE surface.
Verdict
Antigravity is best understood as an orchestration layer around development, not a magic replacement for an editor. Its plans, subagents, asynchronous execution, tests and review artifacts can plausibly reduce hands-on time for multi-step work. The headline’s 50% reduction remains a personal result that should be validated with full before-and-after logs, not presented as a guarantee for every developer.
