In my experience, Onn’s budget streaming box felt better for everyday Plex client use than my aging NVIDIA Shield TV. That is a personal result, not a controlled benchmark or a claim that every Onn model outperforms every Shield. Plex playback depends on the exact devices, files, server, network, and audio/video setup—and the Onn model in this comparison has not been identified precisely.
What “better at Plex” means here
A Plex client is the app on a streaming device that connects to a separate Plex Media Server and plays its library. A server stores and organizes media, then sends it to clients. Those are different jobs: an Onn box that feels quicker for browsing and watching does not automatically replace a Shield used to host a server or attach storage.

My comparison is about the everyday client experience: navigating the Plex interface, starting playback, and using the app on an aging Shield. It is a subjective assessment rather than a measured head-to-head test. No controlled Onn-versus-Shield responsiveness benchmark is established here, and the exact Onn generation, software, and Plex app versions need confirmation before the result can be generalized.

“Onn box” is not specific enough to identify the hardware. A review of the 2023 Onn Google TV 4K Streaming Box reports that Plex can be installed and used, along with 4K playback and HDR10+ support. That establishes basic client suitability for that reviewed model; it does not establish how quickly it runs Plex or how it handles every file. Android Central’s 2023 review

There are also discussions of a 2024 Onn 4K Pro, but a discussion thread is not a formal compatibility test. Plex forum users describe mixed results with Dolby Vision profile 8 and advanced audio on Google TV devices, including the Onn 4K Pro. Treat those as reports from individual setups, not guarantees about the device. Plex forum discussion
For a useful comparison, identify the Onn model name and number, Shield generation (including whether it is the Pro), software versions, and Plex client versions. The Shield TV and Shield TV Pro should not be treated as interchangeable in every feature comparison.

Why an Onn box can feel better for everyday Plex use
For someone who only uses Plex to watch media from a separate server, the key question is whether the client behaves well with that person’s library. If the interface responds more readily or the app feels less frustrating on a newer budget device than on an older streamer, that can make it the better daily player—even if it does not offer the Shield’s wider set of roles.

That judgment should be kept specific. Separate observations about menu navigation, playback startup, seeking, and playback stability; one does not prove the others. Also note whether a file played directly or the server transcoded it. Direct play sends a compatible file to the client without converting its media streams; transcoding shifts conversion work to the Plex server. A smooth result with one file and server does not establish broad format compatibility.

What the Shield TV Pro still does beyond client playback
NVIDIA’s October 2019 announcement described the Shield TV Pro as having additional memory and storage and two USB ports for running Plex Media Server and connecting high-capacity drives or other USB devices. That matters if the Shield itself hosts your server or your media is attached directly to it. A viewer whose Plex server runs on a NAS or computer may not need those capabilities. NVIDIA’s 2019 Shield announcement
The same launch announcement advertised Dolby Vision and Atmos, AI upscaling, and GeForce NOW support for the Shield TV Pro. These are launch-era vendor claims, not independent comparative test results or confirmation that every feature and service remains unchanged today. Check current software and service support for the particular Shield and setup before relying on them.

Check your files and setup before switching
A Plex device’s real-world compatibility depends on the whole playback chain: file format and profile, Plex app, streamer generation, television, and any receiver or soundbar. A device may play a file but fail to pass its audio format through as expected, or handle one HDR file and not another. A report about one Onn setup cannot settle behavior for a different combination.
- Server and playback mode: Identify where Plex Media Server runs and check whether your usual files direct-play or trigger transcoding.
- Formats you actually use: Test representative video, HDR, and audio files from your library, including any formats your television or receiver must pass through.
- Network: Compare the same wired or Wi-Fi conditions and look for stability during playback, not just whether the device connects.
- Everyday controls: Compare navigation, startup, and seeking separately, using the same Plex account and content where possible.
- Other Shield duties: Decide whether you rely on USB storage, hosting Plex Media Server, gaming, or upscaling before treating a playback client as a replacement.
Onn, Shield, or a different Google TV device?
The right choice depends on what you need from the box, not a universal Plex ranking. The available information supports a basic Plex client case for the reviewed 2023 Onn model and broader launch-era roles for the Shield TV Pro; it does not establish a controlled speed winner or current prices.

| Google TV Streamer (4K), contextual alternative | Google lists up to 4K, 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, Dolby Vision, Atmos, built-in Ethernet, and a box form factor. These are Google TV Streamer specifications, not Onn specifications. Google recommends a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable for optimal performance with this device. What this comparison can—and cannot—show
The practical takeaway is narrow: an Onn box may be the more enjoyable Plex client for a particular person replacing an aging Shield, especially when the server is elsewhere and ordinary playback is the priority. The evidence here does not establish that Onn is categorically faster, handles more formats, or replaces Shield TV Pro’s server and USB-storage roles. Test the exact model against your own library and equipment before making the switch.
