You can replace parts of a ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity workflow with free, open-source tools—but not with one app, and not with guaranteed feature or answer-quality parity. A practical local-first setup uses Ollama to run a model, a separate chat interface such as Open WebUI or LibreChat, and a distinct search tool such as Perplexica for web-search-style questions. Which parts are actually local depends on the route and providers you configure.
What “replaced” means in this setup
These four hosted products combine capabilities that a local-first arrangement splits across separate components. The model generates responses; the runtime loads and serves it; the interface handles chat and related features; and a search or retrieval layer finds outside information. Choosing an open-source interface does not, by itself, make the model or search route local.

- Model: The language model that answers prompts. Gemma is one open model family; its published paper describes models based on research and technology used to create Gemini, not the Gemini product itself. Read the Gemma paper.
- Runtime: Software that runs a model locally or routes requests to a hosted model. Ollama supports both local and cloud routes.
- Chat interface: The app you use to converse with models and, depending on the product, connect providers or organize information.
- Search: A separate capability that retrieves web information. A chat model answering from its own model weights is not automatically doing live web search.
So the replacement is a collection of tools and configuration choices, not a single open-source clone of all four services.
Which tools cover which jobs?
| Tool | Role | What the available documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Ollama | Model runtime | Runs models locally and also offers a separate cloud route. Local performance depends on the computer; cloud requests use Ollama’s servers. |
| Open WebUI | Self-hostable chat interface | Its documentation describes connecting multiple providers and building knowledge bases. It can sit in front of local or hosted models, so the interface does not decide where inference happens. Open WebUI documentation. |
| LibreChat | Multi-provider chat interface candidate | Ollama’s repository identifies it as an enhanced ChatGPT clone with multi-provider support. That description establishes it as an option, not every current feature or deployment detail. Ollama’s repository. |
| Perplexica | Search-focused candidate | Ollama’s repository describes it as an AI-powered search engine and open-source Perplexity alternative. Current provider setup, citation behavior, and parity are not established here. |
| Gemma | Model family example | An open model family associated with research and technology used to create Gemini; it is not the hosted Gemini product or a proven drop-in substitute. |
Ollama’s project documentation points to Open WebUI, LibreChat, and Perplexica among related tools and alternatives. See the repository.

How to assemble a local-first chat workflow
The exact interface installation steps vary by platform and release. The essential sequence is to install a runtime, choose a model that fits your hardware, and connect an interface without accidentally routing prompts through a hosted provider.
- Install Ollama from its official download page for your operating system.
- Choose and download a model. Follow the model’s current Ollama instructions and check its size and memory needs before downloading. The quickstart’s example Gemma 4 E2B download is about 7.2 GB; that figure applies to that example, not to every model. Ollama quickstart.
- Run the model locally using the instructions shown for that model in Ollama. Confirm you are using a local model route rather than a cloud model.
- Add a chat interface if you want one. Configure Open WebUI or another suitable interface to connect to the local Ollama service. Open WebUI can also connect to other providers, so inspect its provider configuration rather than assuming every conversation stays on-device.
- Test the workflow with non-sensitive prompts. Check that the interface responds through the intended local model and that any knowledge-base or provider integrations are configured as you expect.
Ollama exposes distinct local and cloud API routes: local requests do not require an API key, while cloud requests do. The route matters more for data flow than whether the chat screen is open source. Ollama API documentation.
What hardware and storage should you expect?
Model choice determines much of the download and memory burden. Ollama’s current quickstart uses Gemma 4 E2B as an example: its download is about 7.2 GB, and Ollama suggests 8 GB of available VRAM—or unified memory on a Mac—for that example. Larger context windows need more memory. These figures are specific to the example and guidance in the quickstart, not universal minimums for all models.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOllama says system RAM can be used when VRAM is insufficient, but responses may be slower. Its download guidance puts the trade-off plainly: “Speed depends on the hardware. Large models are slow on a computer without a strong GPU.” Ollama download guidance.

Downloaded model files can take meaningful disk space, so an external SSD may be useful if your internal drive is limited. The cited documentation does not establish a universally correct capacity or drive speed; base that decision on the models you actually plan to keep.
How close is this to the four hosted services?
The available material does not establish apples-to-apples current answer-quality comparisons between local models and ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity. Nor does it show that the suggested tools reproduce every hosted feature. Treat “replacement” as a workflow decision: try your own recurring tasks, then judge output quality, speed, search usefulness, interface features, and setup burden.
For ordinary model chat, a local model and interface may cover the role you need. For live, source-oriented web answers, you need a search/retrieval layer as well. Perplexica is identified as an open-source Perplexity alternative, but its current provider requirements, citations, and behavior are not established by the cited material. Verify those details in its current documentation before relying on it for research.

Privacy depends on the route, not the label
A fully local inference route keeps model requests on the computer running the model, according to Ollama’s description of its local API. A cloud model route instead sends requests to Ollama’s servers and requires an API key. A self-hosted interface can connect to either local or hosted providers, and search or other integrations may introduce additional services. Check each connection and its data handling before entering sensitive information; “open source” describes software availability, not a blanket privacy guarantee.

What to check before committing
- Task fit: Compare results on the prompts and documents you actually use rather than assuming model-family names imply equivalent capability.
- Memory and disk: Check the selected model’s download size and memory recommendations, especially for longer context windows.
- Data route: Identify whether inference is local or cloud and whether the interface has additional providers enabled.
- Search needs: Confirm that the search tool supports the providers and source/citation workflow you need.
- Licensing: Check the license for the exact model and software release you intend to use, particularly before commercial use. The cited sources do not establish current licensing terms for every named component.
- Maintenance: A self-managed setup gives you control over components but also makes installation, updates, configuration, and troubleshooting your responsibility.
