Recommended Free Tools
To build a modern website, learn semantic HTML, CSS and responsive layout, JavaScript, accessibility, Git, and practical quality checks for performance, privacy, security, and browser compatibility. Start with a small page and add skills as the project needs them; no single framework or full-stack toolset is required for every site.
What “modern web development” means
A modern website is not defined by using the newest framework. It is built for the broad web platform and the people who use it: content has structure, layouts adapt to screens, interactions work with different input methods, and the experience performs reliably across browsers.
HTML provides structure, CSS handles presentation and layout, and JavaScript adds behavior. MDN’s web-development curriculum and web.dev’s learning material cover these foundations alongside the quality practices that make a site useful. Their recommendations can evolve, so treat specific tools as choices to revisit rather than permanent requirements.
Learn the core skills in a useful order
1. Semantic HTML
Begin with meaningful HTML elements. Use headings to organize sections, paragraphs for text, lists for grouped items, links for navigation, and buttons for actions. Choose elements for their purpose rather than their default appearance; CSS can change how an element looks, but it does not change what the element means.

Learn to build forms with associated labels and suitable input types, and add alternative text to images when they convey information. Semantic structure gives browsers and assistive technologies useful context and provides a sound base for styling and interaction. MDN identifies semantic HTML as necessary to a high-quality, usable, accessible website.
2. CSS, typography, and responsive layout
Learn selectors, the cascade, inheritance, the box model, spacing, color, and typography. Then practice layout with tools such as Flexbox and Grid, and build responsive designs that adapt to different viewport sizes and resolutions. Responsive design is more than shrinking a desktop page: content should remain readable and controls usable as available space changes.
Test the page at narrow and wide widths while you build it. Look for horizontal overflow, crowded controls, awkward line lengths, and content that becomes difficult to scan. MDN’s responsive-design learning material treats adaptation to devices, viewport sizes, and resolutions as a core web skill.

3. JavaScript fundamentals
Learn the language before relying on a framework: variables, values, functions, conditionals, loops, arrays, objects, events, and how JavaScript interacts with the document. Use it to support a user task, such as validating a form or opening a menu, rather than adding motion or complexity without a purpose.

Frameworks are commonly used and can help with larger, scalable interactive applications, as MDN notes. They are not a prerequisite for every website. A content-focused page may need little or no JavaScript; choose additional tools when the product’s interaction and scale justify them.
4. Accessibility and user-focused design
Accessibility is part of implementation, not a final coat of polish. Make sure content has a sensible heading structure, form controls have labels, links and buttons are understandable, and interactive features can be operated with a keyboard. Preserve visible focus, use sufficient contrast, and do not rely on color alone to communicate meaning.

Think through the user’s task before building a component. A control should make its result clear; an error should explain what needs attention; and a layout should make important information easy to find. Check interaction with a keyboard as well as a pointer, and use assistive-technology checks appropriate to the site. These practices support people with varied abilities and input methods.
5. Git and collaborative workflow
Learn to track changes with Git, make focused commits, and recover or compare earlier versions. A hosted service such as GitHub can support backup and collaboration, but the key skill is understanding version control itself: what changed, why it changed, and how to share changes safely with a team.
MDN includes version control in its core learning modules and describes it as important for backing up and collaborating on codebases. Even when learning alone, a Git history makes experiments easier to review and undo.

Build a first project that joins the skills together
- Choose a small task. Make a profile page, event page, simple product page, or other focused experience with a clear purpose.
- Structure the content in HTML. Add headings, links, images, and any form controls using elements that match their meaning.
- Style it with CSS. Set typography, spacing, colors, and a layout that remains usable at multiple viewport widths.
- Add only useful interactions. Use JavaScript when it helps someone complete the page’s task, and check that the interaction is understandable and operable.
- Review accessibility as you go. Test keyboard navigation, focus visibility, labels, heading order, and whether the content remains understandable without visual styling.
- Track the work in Git. Commit meaningful changes so you can inspect and reverse them.
- Check the finished experience. Open it in more than one browser, try different screen widths, and investigate noticeable slow loading or delayed interaction.
What to learn after the basics
Build further skills in response to the project rather than following a universal checklist. A complex interactive application may benefit from a framework; a site that stores or processes information may require backend work. The necessary server language, database, and deployment tools depend on the product and the developer’s role, not on a single definition of “modern.”
Continue strengthening responsive design, accessibility, browser testing, performance, security, and privacy as the site grows. MDN’s core modules and web.dev’s learning pathways provide free online material. A guided course or printed reference can suit learners who prefer that format, but it is optional rather than a prerequisite.

Performance and responsiveness
Web performance includes loading, interactivity, responsiveness, and smoothness. If a page feels slow or an interaction is delayed, investigate the specific cause rather than assuming a framework change will fix it. MDN’s web-performance material is a useful starting point for learning how to assess and improve the experience.

Browser and device coverage
The open web includes different browsers and devices. Test the features your page relies on in more than one browser, and verify that layouts and controls remain usable at different widths. Browser differences are a reason to build with standards-based behavior and test the actual experience, not to assume one environment represents every visitor.
Security and privacy
Consider what information the site collects, where it is sent, and whether each collection is needed for the user’s task. Protect user data and treat security and privacy as part of the design and implementation, not as optional refinements. The appropriate safeguards depend on what the product does and the data it handles.
Capture screenshots when reviewing a page
A screenshot can help you inspect a page at a particular viewport or share a visual check with a teammate. You can capture one using your browser’s built-in tools; the exact controls vary by browser. For an API-based option, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its clean-shot workflow accepts consent banners and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed.
Or skip the browser setup
After creating an API key, one GET request can return a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
Where to start if you are new to coding
If you have not coded before, MDN recommends starting with its introductory “Your first website” material before moving to the core modules. Learn by making a small page, checking what changes when you edit it, and gradually introducing layout and interaction. MDN and web.dev both offer free online learning pathways, so you can begin without buying a course or book.
