For local videos, install a player such as VLC or MX Player, open a file from your gallery or file manager, and choose the app when Android offers a chooser. Whether that choice sticks can depend on the file type, the app opening it, and the phone.
Why a replacement player can make local video easier
A dedicated player can be a better fit if the app that currently opens your files struggles with a format or if you want to browse videos stored on a network share. VideoLAN describes VLC for Android as supporting many media formats and streaming protocols, with a local media library and access to network streams, NAS devices, and shared drives. Those are VideoLAN’s published capabilities, not an independent comparison or guarantee for every file and network setup. VideoLAN’s Android download page listed VLC 3.7.0 when checked on October 5, 2026; version numbers can change.

MX Player is another option in the available setup guidance. Its support instructions explain how to select it from Android’s app chooser and save that choice for a video type. The evidence here does not establish which app is faster, easier to use, less intrusive, or better for every viewer, so choose based on the formats and file sources you need and how the app behaves on your device.

How to open local videos with a different player
- Install the player you want to try, such as VLC or MX Player.
- Open a local video from your gallery or file manager. The exact app and labels vary by phone.
- If Android displays an app chooser, select your preferred player. If an “Always” or equivalent option appears and you want Android to remember the selection, choose it.
- Repeat with another video type if the chooser appears again. MX Player says its saved action applies only to the same video type, so a new type may prompt you to choose again. MX Player’s setup instructions cover its chooser workflow.
This procedure concerns opening local files through an app that hands them to a player. It does not establish that the same choice will govern browser-embedded clips, streaming services, or every way of launching a video.

Why Android may not offer one universal default
There is no basis here for assuming that every Android phone has a single system-wide “default video player” control. The chooser may be tied to the file type or the app from which you opened the video, and manufacturers and Android versions can present different settings.
A March 4, 2025 post in the Google Files Community asked to make VLC the default video player; a reply described not finding a video-player category in that poster’s Android 15 Default apps list. That report illustrates why a universal settings path should not be promised. It is one user’s account, not authoritative guidance for all Android phones.

Clear a saved MX Player choice if you want to change it
If Android keeps opening videos in MX Player and you want to choose again, MX Player says to clear its saved default from the app’s settings in Android Settings. MX Player’s instructions direct users to the MX Player app details screen and “Clear defaults.” The precise route and wording can differ by manufacturer; look for MX Player under the installed apps or app-info section of Settings, then find its default-opening controls.
