You can use a Roku TV without paying a fee just to create a Roku account or activate the TV. Roku says a payment method may be requested during activation, but it does not guarantee that every setup flow offers a way to skip that step. If the screen gives you a no-payment option, choose it; if it blocks setup, use only a payment option Roku currently offers in your region or contact Roku Support.
Set up the TV and check the activation screen
To begin, you need the TV, its remote, a power outlet and your Wi-Fi credentials. Roku’s setup guide describes connecting the TV to Wi-Fi, then linking it to an existing Roku account or creating a free one. Linking the TV enables features such as the channel store, subscriptions and personalization. The guide does not promise that every free channel or over-the-air feature is available in every region without an account or payment method. Roku TV setup instructions

- Connect the TV to power and follow its on-screen setup instructions.
- Connect it to your Wi-Fi network.
- Sign in to an existing Roku account or follow the prompt to create one.
- If asked for payment information, read the options shown on the screen. Select a no-payment option only if it is actually offered.
Roku’s U.S. activation guidance says a payment method may be requested; it does not say that every activation flow has a skip button. If you cannot proceed without entering payment details, do not assume there is a universal bypass. Check the supported options displayed for your region or contact Roku Support. Understand what Roku charges for
Roku says account creation and device activation are free. Its activation article states: “Activation is always free, and Roku will never charge you a fee to create an account.” It also says: “You may be asked for a payment method. You will only be charged if you choose to buy something later.” Those are Roku’s statements, not a guarantee that every signup flow will let you finish without adding a payment method. #1 Best Overall
- Easy voice search & control: Quickly search across thousands of top channels, play entertainment, control your streaming, and more with your voice
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, control your Roku device, switch inputs on your Roku TV, and more—all in a tap
- Pre-set channel shortcuts: Pre-set channel shortcuts let you launch popular streaming channels with the push of a button, all without having to scroll
- Simple setup: Simply turn on your Roku device and pull the battery tab on the back of the remote and it should pair automatically
- Works with your Roku device: Roku Voice Remote works with all Roku TV models, Roku audio products, and most Roku players*
Roku says customers pay when they choose subscriptions or make other purchases; it does not charge a recurring device or account fee after purchase and setup. A streaming subscription billed directly by a streaming provider is separate from Roku billing, so its charges and payment settings are managed with that provider. Roku payment methods and billing
If you are asked for a payment method, compare the available choices
Roku’s U.S. support page lists credit or debit cards, Apple Pay, PayPal, Cash App Pay and eligible prepaid gift cards. Availability depends on region and account; the list does not mean every option will appear for every customer. Roku’s UK payment page lists fewer options, illustrating that supported methods vary geographically. Roku payment methods and billing Roku UK payment methods and billing

- Compatible devices - Roku TV models ONLY
- NOT compatible devices - Roku Streaming Players, Roku Audio, or other smart TVs
- Made by Roku for Roku TV - Stream easy with an official Roku remote, designed to work seamlessly with your Roku TV.
- No juggling remotes - Power up your Roku TV, adjust the volume, mute, and control your streaming with an official Roku remote.
- Simple setup - Ready to control your Roku TV in just one step. Comes with pre-installed batteries.
If your goal is to avoid entering card details, use a non-card method only if Roku offers it in your setup flow and you are comfortable adding that method to your account. A prepaid option is not necessarily a way to avoid having a payment method associated with the account.
Remove a saved payment method later
If you have already saved payment details, Roku says you can manage them through its website or on a device, but removal instructions direct users to my.roku.com. Before removing the method, cancel or turn off auto-renew for active subscriptions billed through Roku. A subscription billed directly by a streaming service may need to be cancelled or managed with that provider instead. Roku instructions for managing payment details

Require a PIN for Roku purchases on the TV
To reduce the chance of an accidental on-device Roku purchase, set an optional four-digit Roku PIN and require it for subscriptions, purchases or app additions. This is a purchase-control setting for Roku devices, not a universal block on charges made through a streaming service’s own website or app. Roku PIN and purchase-control guidance
