Animated WebP can be smaller than GIF, but converting a GIF does not guarantee a smaller file. WebP supports both lossy and lossless encoding, and animation settings affect how frames are stored. Without the original GIF, the WebP output, and the conversion settings, there is no way to identify the cause in this particular case. The useful next step is to compare equivalent animations and check how each file was encoded.
Why can an animated WebP be bigger than a GIF?
WebP is designed to compress images efficiently, but that describes what the format can do—not a guaranteed result for every source file. Google’s WebP overview describes its general compression capabilities; those broad claims do not predict the size of one converted animation.

Encoding mode is one place to start. WebP offers lossy compression, which can discard image information to reduce size, and lossless compression, which preserves pixels. Lossless encoding may be the right choice when exact pixels matter, but it does not guarantee the smallest file for every image. Google’s compression documentation explains the two approaches.
Animation representation matters, too. WebP can mix lossy and lossless frames, and its animation model includes frame blending and disposal behavior. If a conversion changes frame handling, timing, dimensions, or transparency, the resulting file may be larger—or it may no longer be a fair comparison with the GIF. Google’s WebP FAQ and container specification describe these animation capabilities.

Those are possible explanations, not a diagnosis of this conversion: no source asset, output file, encoder version, or command is available to establish which factor applied.
How to investigate a larger conversion
- Record the exact inputs and tool. Keep the original GIF and resulting WebP, note the converter and version, and save the options or command used. The gif2webp manual documents lossy encoding, per-frame lossy/lossless selection, and compression-effort options. Available flags can differ by version, so check the manual for the installed tool.
- Check whether lossless mode was selected. If it was, make a separate lossy test at a quality level that still looks acceptable for the page. Do not treat the lossless result as evidence that WebP cannot compress the animation efficiently; it is one particular size-versus-fidelity choice.
- Compare equivalent animations. Check that the files retain the intended dimensions, frame count, frame timing, loop behavior, and transparency. Also review blending and disposal behavior. A difference in any of these can alter the file size or the animation itself.
- Measure the outputs in bytes and inspect them visually. Compare the original GIF, a lossless WebP, and a lossy WebP under documented settings. Choose based on the actual byte counts and acceptable visual quality, not the format names alone.
What to preserve for a fair comparison
For a docs-site animation, file size is only one part of the decision. Keep the behavior and appearance the page needs, and document the settings so someone else can reproduce the result.

- Visual fidelity: Decide whether exact pixels are required or whether lossy compression is acceptable. Inspect edges, gradients, and transparent areas for visible artifacts.
- Animation fidelity: Check dimensions, frame count, timing, loop behavior, blending, and disposal rather than comparing byte counts in isolation.
- Reproducibility: Record the converter name, version, and options. The IETF’s RFC 9649, published in November 2024, specifies the WebP image format; for a conversion, the actual encoder settings still need to be recorded.
There is no universal winner for every animation. A smaller output is useful only if the quality and motion remain suitable for the page; if a carefully matched WebP is still larger, keeping the GIF may be the practical choice.
