The AI Tools Radar’s September 13, 2026 edition covers 490 selected projects, but its follow-up is a one-day availability snapshot—not a sustained check of every project’s progress. It offers a useful curated view of AI coding and agent projects, provided you read its popularity figures and availability counts in the right context.
What the 490-project radar covers
Evgenii Arsentev’s AI Tools Radar dataset records projects featured from June 11 through September 12, 2026. In its 2026-09-13 edition, the 490 records are grouped by source as follows:

| Source | Selected records |
|---|---|
| GitHub | 422 |
| Hugging Face | 63 |
| Hacker News | 5 |
| Total | 490 |
This is a curated radar focused on AI coding and agent projects, not a random or comprehensive sample of open-source AI. The source groups also represent different kinds of entries, so their records should not automatically be treated as equivalent projects or compared using the same popularity metric.
How projects were selected
The radar says it drew from the official GitHub Search API and Hugging Face Hub trending lists. Its GitHub searches included repositories gaining stars, established repositories, and classic AI or LLM repositories with recent pushes. Before publication, claims were checked against each project’s own README or model card.
#1 Best Overall
Each record includes project links, selection dates, recorded popularity metrics, summaries, review-page links, and API snapshots. Selection is editorial: appearing in the radar indicates that a project met its criteria and was chosen for coverage, not that it was independently ranked as one of the best tools.
What the follow-up check actually establishes
Although the dataset describes daily API snapshots, the 2026-09-13 edition’s included snapshot data covers one day: September 12, 2026. At that snapshot, 416 of 427 GitHub repositories were still available, according to the dataset card.
The denominator matters. The 427 repositories counted in the snapshot availability figure are not the same as the 422 GitHub-sourced records in the project composition. The figures refer to different counts in the card and should not be substituted for one another.
This check establishes point-in-time availability for the counted GitHub repositories. It does not show whether every project remained actively maintained, whether it was available throughout the feature window, or how its status changed over an extended period. The one-day snapshot cannot support a sustained trend for the full collection.
How to interpret the popularity figure
The edition reports a median of 493 GitHub stars at the moment of selection. That is a historical selection-time measure, not a current star count or a measure of subsequent growth. The card says snapshots start on September 12, so the dataset does not capture earlier growth through those snapshots.
When comparing entries, keep the measure and date attached to the number: selection-time stars describe popularity when a project was chosen; the September 12 snapshot describes availability at one point in time. Neither alone establishes present-day quality, adoption, or maintenance.

What this radar is useful for
- Discovering candidates: Use the curated set as a starting point for exploring AI coding and agent projects across GitHub, Hugging Face, and Hacker News.
- Tracing selection context: Check each project’s own README or model card and linked page for details that matter to your use case.
- Reading status cautiously: Treat the reported availability as a dated snapshot, not proof of ongoing development or a longitudinal health check.
The dataset card licenses the selection, metadata, and summaries under CC BY 4.0. Project names, descriptions, and code remain subject to their authors’ licenses.
