That can mean fewer separate tools open while you work on a project—but it does not make VS Code a replacement for every kind of productivity app, and what it can do depends partly on installed software and extensions.
What VS Code can bring together
VS Code is more than a text editor. Its workbench combines project files, code editing and intelligence, a terminal, source control, debugging, and testing. The exact language features and integrations available depend on the language support and extensions in use. Microsoft’s overview of core editor features describes the built-in workbench capabilities.

That combination is the practical reason it can take over jobs that might otherwise send a developer between several windows. The payoff is workflow consolidation, not a documented promise of a particular productivity gain or number of apps eliminated.
Where it can replace a separate tool
Writing and navigating code
Project files and editing tools live in the same workspace. Language support can add code intelligence, while extensions can supply additional language features or connect other development tools. This makes VS Code a plausible home for much of the work otherwise done in a separate code editor or language-specific environment, provided the project’s tooling supports the setup.

Running commands and recurring tasks
The integrated terminal runs shells and command-line tools inside the workbench. It supports multiple terminal instances and configurable shell profiles, so you can keep project commands near the files they operate on. See Microsoft’s terminal profile documentation.
For commands you repeat, VS Code tasks can run scripts and processes such as linting, building, testing, or deployment. Tasks bring those command-line tools into the editor workflow; they do not remove the need for the tools themselves. The setup is described in Microsoft’s guide to integrating external tools with tasks.

Reviewing and committing Git changes
VS Code’s source-control interface supports reviewing changes, staging files or selected changes, committing, managing branches, and resolving merge conflicts. It works with the same repository as command-line Git, but Git must be installed separately. The interface is therefore an alternative way to perform common Git operations, not a replacement for Git itself. See Microsoft’s source-control overview and its documentation on additional components and tools.
Debugging and testing
Debugging and testing can be part of the workbench alongside the code. The tools available vary by language and extension, and some workflows depend on external runtimes or test tools. VS Code can provide a shared place to launch and inspect that work without implying every project’s debugger or test runner is included by default.

What still depends on extensions or external software
VS Code’s flexibility comes from combining its built-in workbench with additions. Extensions can add language support, debuggers, source-control providers, and connections to external tools. They are not all built-in features, and compatibility or setup can vary. Microsoft explains how to find and manage them in its extensions documentation.
Profiles can help keep distinct settings and extension sets for different projects or tasks, rather than turning one installation into a cluttered collection of every tool. See Microsoft’s profile guide.

- Included in the workbench: core editing, terminal, and source-control interfaces, alongside debugging and testing features.
- Added through extensions: many language-specific capabilities, debuggers, source-control providers, and integrations.
- Installed separately: tools such as Git, shells, runtimes, and command-line programs that the editor invokes.
Can it replace a terminal or other productivity apps?
For a development task, the integrated terminal can replace the need to switch to a separate terminal window: it runs shells and command-line tools within VS Code. Whether that is sufficient depends on your shell, project, and preferred terminal workflow.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For other development tasks, VS Code can reduce the need to move between a code editor, Git interface, and separate task launcher. But the evidence supports that kind of development-workflow consolidation, not a broad claim that it replaces unrelated productivity apps such as calendars, general note-taking tools, or office software. The title’s “half my productivity apps” is a personal framing, not a measured result that applies to every user.
When the work needs to run somewhere else
Remote Development supports workflows involving containers, SSH-connected machines, and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). That can let you work in the editor while code and tools run in the environment where the project belongs. Setup and extension support can differ by environment; consult Microsoft’s Remote Development overview before assuming a local setup will transfer unchanged.
A practical way to decide what to keep
- List the steps you repeat for a project. Separate editing, command execution, Git operations, debugging, and testing from unrelated work such as scheduling or document creation.
- Check what the project requires. Confirm its language extensions, debugger, runtime, Git installation, and command-line tools. VS Code’s interface does not automatically install every dependency.
- Move one workflow at a time. Try running a command in the integrated terminal, then consider a task for a repeatable script or the source-control view for routine Git operations.
- Keep tools that serve a different job. If a separate application remains better for an unrelated task or a specialized workflow, there is no benefit in forcing it into the editor.
The useful test is not how many app icons disappear. It is whether a project’s day-to-day development steps become easier to manage together without losing a tool or capability you rely on.
