A keyboard can look intact and still have a dead key. Sam Sheridan says he built KbdCheck to test laptop keyboards from a USB drive, without relying on the laptop’s installed operating system. The tool displays a keyboard and highlights keys as they register, and includes a basic mouse test. Sheridan reports that it helped him find a faulty U key on a laptop he was refurbishing.
Why use a bootable keyboard tester?
A browser-based keyboard test can be convenient when a computer is already running normally. But it depends on a working operating system and browser, and often a network connection. That makes it less useful when a laptop is being set up, its operating system is damaged or inaccessible, or you want to check input hardware before returning a repair.

KbdCheck is presented as a small live Linux environment that starts from USB instead of the laptop’s installed system. Sheridan’s stated motivation was: “I wanted something I could put on a USB drive, boot on practically any PC and use immediately.” That describes his aim, not a guarantee that the image works with every computer.

The World Programming article describes KbdCheck as a minimal environment based on Arch Linux, with an ISO of around 47 MB. That approximate size is the figure reported in the September 19, 2026 article, not an independently checked current download size.

How to test every key from a USB drive
- Get the ISO from the official KbdCheck download source. Check its current instructions and release information before downloading. The available article says a SHA-256 checksum accompanies the download, but does not provide the checksum value.
- Verify the download. If the official source provides a checksum, compare it with the ISO you downloaded before writing or booting it. This helps detect a corrupted or altered download; it does not establish that the tool supports your particular laptop.
- Write the ISO to a USB flash drive. The article names Rufus, Balena Etcher, and
ddas possible writing tools. Follow the selected utility’s instructions for writing an image; this process can erase existing data on the chosen drive, so confirm the target carefully. - Boot the laptop from the USB drive. Use the laptop’s startup boot menu or firmware settings to select the USB device. The exact key and menu labels vary by manufacturer.
- Press each keyboard key and check the display. Work systematically through letters, numbers, punctuation, function keys, and modifiers. Look for keys that fail to highlight or register differently from expected. Then use the mouse test if you also need to check pointer movement, buttons, or scrolling.
General live-Linux guidance supports the broad workflow of writing an ISO to USB and booting it, but does not independently validate KbdCheck’s operation or device support. For an overview of live media, see Arch Linux’s download guidance.

Secure Boot and compatibility limits
The article says KbdCheck currently requires Secure Boot to be disabled because its image is not signed for Secure Boot. Secure Boot is a firmware security feature; turning it off changes a device’s security posture. If you need to change the setting, consult the laptop manufacturer’s instructions, note the original setting, and restore it after testing if appropriate. Check the current KbdCheck instructions first, since signing or requirements can change.

- 2 in 1 Tester: This memory tester is suitable for DDR4 and DDR5 memory, can easily troubleshoot various hardware faults, suitable for laptop, desktop or server computer.
- LED Light Indication: The memory tester adopts a light emitting tube indication method, and you can easily find the fault point based on the LED brightness indication.
- Dual Power Mode: The tester can be powered by battery (not included) or by inserting standard TYPE C cable into a charging head or power bank. It can charge and discharge simultaneously. The indicator turns red when charging and green when fully charged.
- Multi Functional: The memory tester can test all data cables in memory, when hardware faults occur in these data cable circuits, the brightness of the LED indicator lights will change, regardless of whether they are particularly bright or not.
- Usage Method: Use battery (not included) or Type C cable for power supply. Insert the memory module into the slot of the tester, identify the faulty pin based on the numerical indication of the indicator light, and use a multimeter to determine the specific cause of the fault.
When a browser test may be enough
If the laptop’s operating system and browser work, a browser-based test may be the simpler choice. A bootable tester is useful when you want to test independently of the installed OS, such as before completing setup or when that OS cannot be used. Neither approach replaces checking the laptop’s keyboard in the context of a suspected hardware fault; a missed key is a clue to investigate, not a diagnosis of the underlying cause.
