A quote checker can mark a real answer “unverified” simply because it searches too little of a transcript. In a HireQwik project write-up, the company says its earlier checker looked only at roughly the candidate’s 10 most recent turns. When the team checked flagged quotes against full transcripts, it found most of the quoted evidence elsewhere. The account describes one hiring workflow—not a general error rate for AI hiring systems.
What the “1 in 6” claim does—and does not—mean
HireQwik’s 2026 account describes an AI rule-checker used to verify interview quotes. Its earlier version searched a recent-message window of roughly 10 candidate turns. The author says that limited window produced an earlier figure they characterize as 15%, and frames the project with the title “wrong about 1 in 6 times.” The write-up does not define a denominator that reconciles the title’s phrasing, the 15% figure, and every count reported below, so those figures should not be treated as interchangeable or as a precise, independently verified error rate.

The underlying counts are more informative. The old checker marked 162 of 166 knockout quotes unverified. On a full-transcript re-check, the author says 163 of 166 quotes were present word-for-word or close to it, one of 166 was genuinely missing, and two of 166 could not be checked because the stored text was a bracketed description such as “no audible response.” These are project-author-reported findings, not an independent audit. In particular, the 162 flags were not 162 confirmed false quotes.
The source is HireQwik’s company write-up, “AI Hiring Hallucination: Checking Quotes Before a Reject”, reported as published shortly before October 5, 2026. Its account concerns quote grounding in a particular workflow; it does not establish how often AI hiring decisions, or other AI checkers, are wrong.

Why a recent-message window missed evidence
A transcript is often stored as a sequence of short speech-to-text segments rather than as one uninterrupted answer. HireQwik’s author says about 37% of candidate turns in this project’s data contained four words or fewer. That project-specific figure helps explain why a window of roughly 10 turns could cover only a small stretch of speech: a relevant phrase might be in an earlier segment even as the candidate continued answering.
That creates a basic distinction between “not found in the portion searched” and “not present in the interview.” A limited-window checker can establish the first, but not the second. If the result is used to support a consequential decision, the evidence trail needs to identify what transcript was searched and whether the search covered the full available record.

How the revised grounding check works
The company describes a shared check that searches the candidate’s full transcript and returns one of three states: grounded, not grounded, or unknown. Its reported matching procedure is:
- Normalize both texts: lowercase them, strip punctuation, and collapse spaces.
- Handle short quotes strictly: for a quote of six words or fewer, require an exact match somewhere in the candidate’s transcript.
- Check longer quotes for overlapping runs: split the quote into consecutive six-word runs and require at least one third of those runs to appear in the transcript.
- Search all available transcript text: do not limit the comparison to recent turns.
- Represent uncertainty explicitly: return “unknown” when the stored record cannot be checked, rather than treating it as proof that the quote is absent.
For its example, the write-up says a 16-word quote produces 11 overlapping six-word runs; three matching runs meet the one-third threshold. These are implementation choices described by HireQwik, not validated standards for quote verification. Normalization also has limits: lowercasing and punctuation removal do not make contractions such as “can’t” equivalent to “cannot,” though other matching runs may still overlap.

Searching the full transcript addresses the specific failure mode the author identified: relevant evidence falling outside a recent-turn window. The three-state result also avoids collapsing an unavailable or unreadable record into a negative finding. Those choices make the result easier to interpret, but the description alone does not show how often the revised rule accepts incorrect quotes or rejects correct ones.
HireQwik says the shared check has been in use since August 8, 2026. A background task stamps recent interviews about once a minute, and a one-off task processed historical knockout quotes. The account does not provide an independently tested error rate for the revised checker on a fresh or external dataset, nor a confusion matrix or replication. As the project author put it, “The lesson I took was not ‘our AI is fine.’”

What to look for in any quote-verification system
- Transcript coverage: can the system search the full available transcript, or only a recent slice?
- Traceability: can a reviewer inspect the matching transcript passage behind a grounded result?
- Short-quote treatment: does the system use exact matching for short phrases, where a few words can be ambiguous?
- Transcription tolerance: are normalization rules and overlap thresholds documented, and are their limits clear?
- Uncertainty handling: does the system distinguish “not grounded” from a record it cannot check?
- Validation evidence: are error rates measured against a defined dataset, with counts and denominators that can be interpreted?
