Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Moving a Steam game library from one SSD to another can make little or no noticeable difference to load times. SSDs tend to show their clearest advantage over mechanical hard drives; the result of an SSD-to-SSD move depends on the game, the drive connection, and what else the computer is doing. The title describes one experience, not a guaranteed outcome for every PC or game.
Why might an external SSD barely change game load times?
Storage is only one part of a game’s loading process. A game may spend time reading assets from disk, but it also has to process them and load them into memory. If the drive was not the main bottleneck, replacing one SSD with another may have little effect on the time you notice.

Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance also notes that low free RAM can prevent frequently used files from being cached, which may make level loading take much longer. It says a drive can occasionally take a second or more to respond and cause a pause. Those are possible contributors, not a diagnosis of the result described in the title: the computer, games, connection, and test conditions are not specified.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

There is no universal load-time percentage for external SSDs compared with internal SSDs in the available official materials. An external drive’s results depend on the drive and the connection between it and the computer, as well as the game’s workload. A drive’s advertised peak throughput alone does not tell you how quickly a particular game will launch or load a level.

- Customize your drive’s RGB lighting with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only) to show off your style and make every play personal.
- Kick loading into overdrive with a USB 3.2 Gen2x2 interface and speeds up to 2,000MB/s. (Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.)
- Compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. {Compatible with PlayStation 4 Pro or PS4 with system software version 4.50 or higher, PlayStation 5 (Play and store PS4 games; archive PS5 games), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S (Play and store Xbox One games; archive Xbox Series X|S games).}
- Keep more of the latest and largest titles installed and ready to launch with capacities of up to 2TB. (1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.)
- Built with WD_BLACK toughness thanks to a shock-resistant structure, this durable drive can survive a drop of up to two-meters.
Steam’s guidance distinguishes moving game files from moving the Steam client itself. It describes adding another Steam Library location and moving games, while warning against installing Steam itself on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues. See Steam’s instructions for moving a Steam installation and games.
What evidence says about SSDs and game loading?
The strongest quantified comparison in the cited evidence is SSD versus HDD—not one SSD versus another. In a 2011 study, Mark Claypool and Kajal Claypool tested Torchlight, Civilization IV, and Portal 2 on one desktop and one laptop. In that test setup, games booted about 25% faster and started about 20% faster on SSDs than on HDDs; save times did not improve significantly. The authors cautioned that the results did not cover all games and called for more study of games that stream terrain from storage. The findings provide context for the HDD-to-SSD jump, not a forecast for a modern external SSD upgrade. Read the study.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Current editorial guidance points to diminishing practical returns within SSDs. PC Gamer’s January 16, 2026 guide says faster NVMe drives can speed up copying games and Steam file validation, while potentially shaving a second or two from level loads; it describes the more significant change as HDD to SSD. That is editorial guidance, not a universal benchmark for every game or setup. PC Gamer’s 2026 NVMe SSD guide.

How to test whether your drive is the bottleneck
Compare the same game and the same kind of load on the same computer. A launch, a level load, asset streaming during play, installation, patching, and file verification are different tasks; a drive may affect one more than another.
- Choose one repeatable scenario, such as loading the same save or level. Keep the game version and other conditions as consistent as possible.
- Record the external SSD, its enclosure, the USB interface, and the actual host port used. Changing the cable or port between runs can change the connection being tested.
- Time several runs on each drive instead of relying on one attempt. Keep cold starts separate from repeat loads, since later runs may benefit from cached data.
- Compare the results for the task you care about. If launching and level loading barely change but installation or file verification improves, the drive may still help with those other jobs.
3DMark’s Storage Benchmark uses game-based workloads for loading, saving, installing, and gameplay recording, and supports internal and external drives. Its DirectStorage feature test is described as a near-best-case scenario; it does not include variables such as a game’s asset-management system, so it should not be treated as a prediction for every title. See the 3DMark Storage Benchmark listing and the 3DMark announcement.

When an external SSD makes sense for a Steam library
An external SSD can be a practical way to add game storage or carry a library between compatible computers. It is not a dependable way to make every game load noticeably faster than it already does from an SSD. Before buying one for speed, check the computer’s available connection and the drive or enclosure specifications; the evidence here does not establish compatibility or results for any particular model.
