While building Sizecurve, a size-curve forecasting app for apparel merchants, I followed a successful installation with an “Invalid request signature” error. The eventual problem was not one bad check: my assumptions about redirects, embedded authentication, installation, credentials, and error handling combined to keep the app out of reach.
The first lockout came after installation
In my account of the incident, the dashboard route required a valid Shopify request signature. After installation, the app redirected to /app, but that redirect did not carry the signature the route expected. Installation appeared to succeed; opening the dashboard did not.

My first response was to issue a signed session cookie after verifying installation. That seemed to establish a trusted session, but it addressed the environment I expected rather than the one where the app was actually running.

The cookie fix did not match the embedded app
The app was being shown inside a Shopify admin iframe. My cookie-based approach failed in that embedded context. As I put it, “I had built a fix for the place the app isn’t rather than the place it runs.”

I changed the app shell to obtain an App Bridge session token and send it as a bearer token when requesting dashboard data. That was a change in the authentication approach, but it did not by itself resolve the other problems hidden behind the initial lockout.
One installation assumption concealed several failures
I had expected a classic OAuth authorization-code callback. In the installation path I encountered, that callback was not reached. With no offline token stored, API requests failed. The interface then surfaced a paywall or a reconnect loop instead of making the underlying installation and credential problems clear.

Other issues compounded the failure: an unavailable app handle, missing access scopes in the active version, and a token type the API rejected. A loader also discarded a useful server error, leaving the interface with less information than the server had produced. Separately, a revoked token was treated as if the merchant had no subscription, so an authentication failure became an inappropriate paywall.

- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Request or session authentication: a missing or invalid signature, or an absent session, means the app cannot establish the request context it expects.
- Installation and credentials: an installation path that does not create the token the app expects leaves API calls without usable authorization.
- Configuration: a missing scope or unavailable app handle can make an otherwise reachable app unable to perform its intended work.
- Credential rejection or revocation: a rejected or revoked token is not evidence that a subscription is missing.
- Error presentation: discarding a server response can turn an actionable failure into a confusing loop or paywall.
In this incident, each category obscured the others. An interface should preserve those distinctions enough to guide the next diagnostic step, while avoiding disclosure of secrets.
Make the app report what it can observe
The most useful change in my account was an authenticated diagnostic endpoint. It used a session token and reported installation state without returning a secret. That gave the app a way to describe its own state from inside the environment where the failure occurred.

This is an operational lesson from one project, not a universal Shopify implementation recipe. A diagnostic response should reveal enough state to distinguish likely causes, but should not expose access tokens, signing secrets, or other credentials. It should also return errors in a form the app can handle and show the merchant a useful next step rather than disguising an authentication problem as billing.

Test the browser and embedded flow, not only the server
My account describes server-side tests that did not reveal failures in the browser iframe and embedded merchant-admin flow. That does not establish how often this happens across Shopify apps, but it shows why a server-only test suite can miss a failure that depends on how the app is launched and authenticated in its real context.
The project narrative reports 37 passing tests at one point and 47 at another. Those are counts from that project’s own test runs, not evidence that a particular number of tests is sufficient or that the app was independently verified. The final checks I reported covered malformed shop domains, missing or forged sessions, and unsigned webhooks; those are reported project results, not independently reproduced platform guidance.
What this incident does—and does not—establish
This account is a debugging story about mismatched assumptions and interacting failures, not proof that one authentication pattern is right for every embedded app. It does not independently establish current Shopify requirements for authentication flows, token lifetime or refresh behavior, scopes, or iframe cookie behavior. Developers should verify those details against current official Shopify documentation for their app configuration and version rather than treating this incident as a platform specification.
